He left in part because Bozeman replaced him with K.J. Roberts after his dad died. Campanelli liked him more than Roberts and started Jerod over him at the beginning of the season and he started the first 23 games. Once Campanelli was gone Bozeman inserted Roberts as the starter and according to Haase he was relegated to the last scholarship player off the bench. He read the writing on the wall and left for Kansas. As I recall he turned out to be a pretty good player for he Jayhawks.

And yet, he's done really well at harvard, with less talented players. So what's a more accurate record of his coaching acumen?

He's done well at Harvard by beating up on poor competition. I'll go with his experience in the Big 10 as being more relevant.

You think Bozeman sent Gardner cash and that was his first illegal recruiting tactic? He went from completely above board to mailing a wad of cash??

Kidd was recruited when Bozeman was the third assistant at Cal in the 90s. Bozeman had a wife and kids. He did not make enough as a Cal assistant to buy players (nor did he really have an incentive).

Shareef said (and maintains to this day) he was never offered money by Bozeman and the NCAA investigated and confirmed it. Shareef comes from a very moral, religious family.

It was Bozeman that reported Tremaine Fowlkes's car to the NCAA (after Fowlkes dad called Bozeman). LINK The car was given to Tremaine by Jelani's uncle James Casey, an L.A. based sports agent (Benoit Benjamin was his client). The same uncle that reportedly gave the Gardners (his relatives and L.A. neighbors) the $10,000, but somehow via Bozeman in Berkeley, or via an NBA player intermediary, or...... and supposedly without Jelani's knowledge. The Gardner's claim was Jelani chose Cal on his own and the money was a side deal to get money from Casey (but for some reason arranged by Bozeman). However, because of their sting, Jelani, who had lost his starting position, was able to transfer to Pepperdine without losing any eligibility. And they never had to pay back any money but Jelani kept his amateur status.

So if Bozeman didn't buy Kidd, Shareef, or Fowlkes, who did he buy?

Gardner. And that whole deal stinks.

Great summary and accurate perception. The one detail to correct is that Jelani did sit out a year when he transferred. It was the delusional thought of his parents that he would not have to sit out, which served as the impetus for them to put the tape recorder in Mom's purse...

Would definitely chat with both Larry and with Howland.

The REALLY almost impossible thing to know is whether Howland recruited talent or whether it was the UCLA brand and talent came DESPITE Ben. The upside really is that cal will NEVER outrecruit Zona or UCLA. In many ways that is the same position Pitt was vis-a-vis Syracuse and UCONN. What Ben did there was feed the chip on the shoulder attitude to ridiculous levels. The interesting (unknown?) question is whether he could do it at Cal.

Flip side - he could be damaged goods post UCLA meltdown with recruits and AAU crowd. You simple have to do LOTS of homework there to understand the undercurrents.

Again, buyers market - I think we can make a good hire. And again, Monty did right by CAL by giving Sandy an internal candidate in TD.

Yeah, but we need better recruiting than Monty or anybody on his staff.

Another site says Shaka is apparently in play. I doubt he'd come, though.

An interesting statement from someone who is likely older than Howland

Is that supposed to be relevant to something? I wouldn't hire me either. Being that age I understand some of the ramifications of it, but more to the point, it's a branding issue. This program has progressed in some ways under Montgomery, but it needs to be built into something more and that takes a young energetic guy who can recruit. That isn't Howland in any event, but he's burned bridges in recruiting circles, he's a jerk, and his style isn't going to sell well here.

If we can't land a blockbuster, I'd be very happy with TD as head coach with Theo as an assistant and some other experienced assistants.
I'd also be happy with UC Irvine's Russell Turner. Great pedigree (including a few years under Monty) and has UC Irvine headed in the right direction.

What about Danny Manning? NBA experience, 6 years as an assistant at Kansas under Self, 2 pretty solid years of HC experience at Tulsa, big name recognition but not such a huge get that he's got his sights set on a premier gig. This type of profile seems just about perfect for Cal.

Pretty certain that he's taking the Wake Forest job.

At least the next HC should consider him for an assistant position.

I like this thinking. It would help @ O'Dowd, all of the Bay Area and The Soldiers.

Please, no promotional hires like dykes. We need an established coach who can cope with being in a top tier conference. The new coach should also not be a "system coach" but rather be able to adapt to his players and the uniqueness that is Berkeley (education and bureaucracies included). A no excuse, highly intelligent, highly experienced and high character type. People are so into hiring fiery young recruiting gurus. I think if we hire a guy like I mentioned, recruiting will take care of itself and we'll be better off in the long run. I've a always thought, with the right coach, Cal can sell itself

Which coach did you mention? Or are you referring to "an established coach" in general?

Dear God, please not Howland.

Honestly, I'd rather rehire Ben Braun. Same boring offense, but at least people like Braun. Braun is a better recruiter than Howland would be at Cal unless we want to be on NCAA sanctions.

Howland would be a disaster.
