Agree Shocky. Sat next to Jordan Jackson at lunch--literally his first day at Cal, arriving yesterday from LA. Looking forward to seeing his strength and conditioning program. Nice addition to the staff.

Pleased to meet your lovely daughter--think she's a chip off the old block, and I mean that as a compliment. Nothing beats a sports relationship with dad.

couple of the guys told me martin met with the team the day after the nit loss to cal state bakersfield & told the guys "i'm not sure if i'm gonna be here next season or not, not sure what's gonna happen, really enjoyed coaching you guys"

15 minutes after the the meeting the news broke that the dealmaker was heading to missouri

Martin lost my respect with the way how handled the Bakersfield game. It was clear he was already leaving. He should have turned the game over to his assistants as soon as he knew he was leaving.

Respectfully disagree. When someone leaves a position, it's almost impossible to handle it "just right". Heck, before the Bakersfield game, lotsa people here were saying it was so unimportant, we shouldn't have even taken it. 1,500 fans show up (I was one of them). Later, it's all of a sudden a big deal? Cuonzo Martin came here, gave us the best he had for three years, then left for a better job. It's called building a career.

I'm cool with him, not to mention he had to pay us a buyout, as opposed to our last two football coaches. Not to mention he wasn't the world's greatest coach anyway and now we can continue our elusive search for the Holy Grail that much sooner.

Best of luck at Mizzou, Coach Martin. You know when it was worth it? When you got Brown, then got Rabb, then when it looked like we also had Swanigan! That was a moment right there, yes it was. It looked like we were rolling for a few hours there!

agreed, martin told a confidant after the season that he was relieved re: the nit loss because he was concerned his acceptance (which happened that sunday) of the missouri job would've been leaked if the bears had played on

and that's why young ivee didn't play, no point sacrificing yourself for a dealmaker that's already checked out

The problem is way more inexplicable because those numbers are way smaller than you would think. Our top 1,000 current donors have lifetime aggregate giving of under $100k. Hell if you wrote a check for high four figures you'd be pretty close to being in the top 5,000 tomorrow.

Don't want to denigrate anyone's contribution, and for some people that would be an impossible amount of money to give, but at Texas $100k would get you a newsletter and an invitation to an annual pep rally. Maybe.

Honestly it's a question of who gives enough that they can reasonably expect some level of direct interaction with the AD. That can't be more than 100 people or so (200 at the outside). And the AD can't even deal with those folks (or apparently the top 10 donors for that matter).

Of course I don't care if you give 5 cents. Someone in the AD's office should be responding to every donor email and call. They are in the customer service business and the failure to respond to correspondence and calls is inexcusable. Get a dozen student interns - I've heard there are some students at Cal - and have them respond. They should also collate the information and report to the AD who should then be addressing common concerns through press statements, interviews or whatever. This is not rocket science.

No P5 schools acts this way. Not one.

at the senior lunch (which was not attended by the killer whales in protest of the athletic director's dysfunctional communication skills of not returning texts, phone calls, letters, etc. unless he is asking someone for something) mike williams & jeremy wang stood by themselves off to the side for much of the event

trust me, they got no plan for the fundraising of the necessary dedicated basketball practice facility

the lack of interaction is reminiscent of the pac 12 tournament where mike williams, jeremy wang & the athletic department development staff gobbled up the front 2 rows of premium seats behind the cal bench while not interacting with donors/season tix holders during their free all expenses paid vacation to las vegas

trust me, the monster is gonna report this **** if it happens at the 1st 2017 football game in north carolina and/or the 2017 basketball maui tournament

I hope so. Right now the prospects are grim IMO. Would throw away 2017 for a couple of top transfers and a good 2018 class. But 2018 recruiting becomes tougher if you have a poor 2017. Not impossible but more difficult.

It's a shame they decided to boycott the senior lunch. I'm sure there were other ways they could have voiced their displeasure. I'm guessing the lunch is a way of showing appreciation to the kids for sticking with and competing for the school.

Last season the women's banquet was similarly closed to fans on the lame pretext they had no seniors. I'm sure in both cases everyone was disappointed by the way the seasons ended, but as a fan I'd like to celebrate and hang out with the team anyway.

I bought a table at last year's banquet. Didn't go myself. Just gave Cal the seats. Viewed this as a donation to support Martin. I was told that they wouldn't be doing this year's banquet at the same time I was told about hiring Wyking, but on reflection it was more of an aside than anything else. I was told they weren't having donors participate this year because with Cuonzo's departure everything was in a state of "flux." I can see that. But I also wonder if they didn't feel like they could approach the usual suspects who typically buy these tables. Money from the event goes to the coach's discretionary fund. If folks are displeased with the process used to hire the new coach I image the chances of getting them to buy a table would be roughly the equivalent of us being in the Final Four next year (or the equivalent of getting them to fund the new practice facility). Basically zero point zero, Mr. Blutarsky.

I remember after we won the Nit my son and I went to the banquet at His Lordships. My son and I had a great tine watching videos with the team. We also enjoyed one banquet at the Marriott in Oakland. These dinners helped bring my son into the fold and now he goes to dvery basketball game.

When we asked a few years ago why fans could no longer go we we were told it was too expensive and they were losing money

They are having it on campus now so why couldnt they just charge the cost of the food? They no longer want fans interacting with the players?

We badly need s new AD. I am tired of this crap.

welcome 6'2" 170 lbs point guard deschon winston from birmingham (van nuys) high school in so cal on his commitment to the california golden bears

the staff did not want deschon's name out there, he comes heavily recommended from juhwan harris dyson (9th grade teammate) to coach wyking just like the spider fly came heavily recommended to the dealmaker from jemarl baker & ira lee...the game that heated up cal's recruitment of winston was his explosive 43 points on 17 of 22 field goals & 5 of 7 3 pointers vs jhd's heritage christian in January

winston averaged 17.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 3.8 apg & 2.2 spg...he can shoot from the perimeter & attack the rim and will be a solid fit with coach wyking's plans to run like lousiville

and yeah deschon is not a dumb azz, he got a 4.0 gpa this year & has already completed junior college classes...the 1st recruit of coach wyking's era is a true student athlete, he will not struggle academically like charlie in berkeley

this is exactly the type of player I want to see. plays good competition in the same geographical area (LA San Fernando Valley) as Heritage Christian (JHD's school) and powerhouse Sierra Canyon. Now if we can get his teammate Devante Doutrive (assuming he qualifies).

I am glad to see that Wyking and Co have a plan that is in implementation. Glad to hear that we have the grad transfer prospect, glad that we have Deschon, who is the type of player I want on Cal, and here's hoping Chase decides to come to Cal. We just needed something to happen. Now, let's hope that the rest falls into place soon.
