I'm sounding like a broken record, on different threads, but what's his record as a head coach (and at what levels)?

How about Rod Benson. We probably continue to lose but it sure would be entertaining.

Is he coaching? He might be a good Assistant here, if he has a resume.

All in on Shantay Legans with Jelani Gardner as lead assistant and recruiting coordinator. Not sure Cal can match EWU, but a lifetime contract might stoke Shantay's interest. Would be a dream hire for me.

Only if Tremain Fowlkes can be an assistant too.

Do we know if Brandon Chauca is available to coach? He has the same number of head coaching wins as Dennis Gates... BUT also was the best shooter on his team when he attended Cal. #fundamentals

You know, I was thinking of Tremaine the other day when I was reframing my Xavier McDaniel poster. But I think an assistant coach position wouldn't make full use of his talents. I see him as an AD at Cal. He's like a perfect hybrid of Dave Maggard and Steve Gladstone, with the X-Man's intensity. The donors would LOVE him.

You know, there's some pretty old people on this forum. Some of them may have heart issues. You're putting their lives in danger.

Steve Kerr also made sure to put an experienced head coach on his first staff. If we were going to hire a career assistant, I'd mandate that he hire someone of that ilk to help him transition. And that assistant better have a proven record of high level recruiting because otherwise, there's no reason to hire a guy that's never been a head coach. Where's the value?

Gates could be good...or he could be bad. In a different situation I'd be for taking the chance, but after the last 2 seasons we cannot take that risk.

There's no doubt that Leonard Hamilton has built a winning culture, philosophy and program at FSU. And he's done so with a fairly unique approach: playing a deep rotation (11-man rotation with the leading scorer this year coming off the bench) with an emphasis on defense and 7 guys who are 6'8" or taller. The recruiting success is a little overblown as they only have 2 RSCI top 100 players.

My concern with Gates is similar to my concern with Wyking when he was hired. I doubt Gates could deploy the same type of system here that FSU has, just as Wyking was never gonna deploy the type of Louisville system he learned from Pitino. They're recruiting a different type of player at FSU and Louisville and the long, tall hyper-athletic guys are harder for us to recruit than it would be at those schools.

If you recall the first Wyking press conference, he talked about installing a high energy full court pressing system with frequently switching defenses, half court traps, frequent substitutions with depth, emphasis on athleticism/S&C as well as a up tempo offense with shots early in the shot clock. None of that happened because we didn't have the personnel or the bodies for it. I think the same would be the case if we hired Gates who might try to create a Leonard Hamilton style system. Square peg, round hole.

+Many. I would love to watch that system. But you really have to have an UNLIMITED recruiting pool and NO barriers to admission because you want to go out and find any and every kid that fits that profile and god only put so many 6'7" 18 year olds on the planet.

Agree with that assessment and would put Richard Midgley in that category (i.e. check back in a few years after some time as a HC at mid-major somewhere).

Whoever is named head coach should bring in A.J. Diggs as a defensive man to man specialist.

Oaktown, I mentioned A.J. because he used to annoy the hell out of opposing point guards.

Can you clue me in to Yogi's potential take?

My guess is he'll think it's not very bright, b/c an assistant coaching gig at Long Beach Poly doesn't really qualify you for anything at this level.

Yogi wasn't the biggest fan of Diggs defensive prowess when he played. In making a joke I've put myself in the unfortunate position of speaking for another, but I believe he felt that he was significantly overrated due to the higher number of steals, but that the steals came at a cost of putting himself out of good defensive positioning. And when you took away the steals he felt that the defense Diggs played was substandard.

Yogi is tired of all of his admirers piling on to him and just doesn't care enough about that comment
