i, too, am adopting a wait-and-see attitude toward Coach Fox and his forays into overseas recruiting. But, I am reminded that Gooch Foster, former Cal women' coach replied heavily on international recruits because many american parents simply did not want their daughters to play for her. so--caution is the operative word here.

I don't see what the connection is here with the other coach.
Our problem was losing and terrible coaching from the previous staff, not a coach who American parents didn't want their kids playing for.
So far, Fox and staff have done a decent reclamation job from the lot that was given them. Of course it's a wait and see, but recruiting internationals was probably the only way to recover short-term from the mass defections in players and recruits.
As we have seen down the road in Moraga, a healthy international recruiting program can really help.

Well said. I was not happy with the Fox hire, but given the situation the heavy reliance on international recruits was a smart move. He has managed to assemble a team that at least has me interested. I was not a fan of his coaching style at Georgia, but again, on that count, wait and see.

It seems like he is trying to make lemonade out of the lemons that were handed to him using the respected Berkely brand internationally to offset the damaged Cal brand stateside.

As I've said before, as a coach, Fox reminds me of Ben Braun: who was a decent, resourceful recruiter and made international recruiting an important part of the program.
If you saw the final game in the NCAAs this year, you saw international players making a huge contribution. This is a different period than decades ago when Foster coached. The top American players, with limited exceptions, are bought and paid for through AAU intermedaries by certain schools (don't take my word for it, read the Pac 12 Report). So if you want to play it honest, you better be looking beyond the borders.helltopay1 said:

There's nothing strange or requiring caution involved in international recruiting. There's nothing reminiscent of Gooch Foster here. She's more like the Wyking in that story.helltopay1 said:
