One of the all time greats at Berkeley. Surprised his jersey isn't in the rafters yet

Clearly, that headband has magical powers.

And doesn't that ball look a little small? Do they use a child's size basketball in that league?

Chauca is a shooter but never played enough to find his rhythm so he either forced bad shots or missed the couple open looks he had

But his main problem is he was undersized and overmatched defensively and as a ball handler. I thought he finally got to play meaningful minutes in a game (his last one) in the NCAA. We lost our senior PG, our backup PG got two quick fouls and was on the bench

This was chaucas big moment and he failed. 0-2, 1 assist, was abused when he was handling the ball, and could not defend

He got his chance and it sealed my opinion of him

However he has skills and has worked hard. That game was earlier in the year. This week he was drafted in the 4th round of the PBA. That's low, but good luck to him

By the way, in that NCAA game, I felt the one player we could not lose was Ty, and with Ty and Bird out their minutes went to Roger, Domingo and Chauca who shot 0-11 in a combined 48 minutes

Basketball is huge in the Philippines. It is by far their biggest sport. Chauca can have a pretty good life there.

At least he took it well when it didn't work out at Cal.

Jerome Randle was undersized and his coaches didn't play a lot of zone. But he had skills at the other end that made up for his lack of size. Chauca didn't.

Hard to even put Randle and Chauca in the same sentence. Not only was Chauca small, but he was extremely slow too. Plus, he couldn't shoot. Not sure where the rep that he was a shooter came from. His 2FG%, 3FG% and FT% were all weak. Defensively; he was an enormous liability due to lack of size and quickness. He was a complete waste of a scholarship but that happens sometimes. Just totally unable to contribute meaningfully at the D1 level. More of an RSF-level player.

Yeah - that was one of the more frustrating things and not JR's fault - teams would just post up their guards or shoot over Jerome repeatedly. That said, by senior year, as evidenced by Pac 12 POY, he was a force.

God I miss those years ;-)

I remember one ill-advised time Monty went zone against Arizona with Randle in the game only to have Chase Budinger go off shooting over him at the top of the key.

I'd be surprised if Chauca's jersey made it to the rafters. Not because he sucked, but because the geniuses who run the Cal bball program have taken down all the jerseys and championship banners that used to be in the rafters, leaving a sterile environment,
