Sorry, but you have no idea if students admitted into his class would be admitted to Berkeley, or UCLA, or UC San Diego, or Davis, or Santa Barbaba, or Santa Cruz, or Irvine if they were applying today. Times are different, students are different, qualifications are different, and requirements are different. You're just speculating based on your prejudices. The population of the state is very different today and at least 3-4 times higher than it was 50 years ago, and the size of the student body today is only about 75% higher than it was 50 years ago, so there are fewer spaces for many more people. Then you also have to realize that there are many more out of state admits today due to economic necessity on the part of the university. I'll bet there are 10 times more out of state students at Cal today than there were 50 years ago. Plus a 4.0 GPA today is about equivalent to a 2.5 GPA 50 years ago due to grade inflation. Stop trashing yesterday's students.

And if you're only 50, you're barely out of diapers compared to many on this Board.

The biggest issue with college admissions these days has nothing to do with grades or test scores or anything else so complex. It's just a simple matter of supply and demand.

The supply - the number of freshman admitted to American universities in a given year - has not increased at anything close to the increase in population over the last 50 years.

So today, you have millions more applying for admission to effectively the same number of spots from a couple of decades ago. So the laws of supply and demand apply here. More demand, unchanged supply, result is increased cost (or, in this analogy, higher grades and test scores needed).

But to the earlier generational issue. . . It is simply clear that anyone under 50 or over 60 is much more feeble minded than those in their 50's. It's either diapers or geritol. Excellent points all around! In Santa Clara County, I would guess the % of Seniors applying to 4 year colleges is above 50 - with some schools as high as 75+

AND, yes - geezers and youngens need to merge to the right to make way for us in our 50s. 50 is the new black - or something like that.

Extremely well-argued.....gives me yet another reason for being proud to be a CAL grad.

When. I transferred to Cal from Contra Costa College, all you needed was a degree from there, plus some language requirement. The courses I took at jr college were harder than those at Cal, with exception of George Linkowski's History class .name probably spelled wrong.
