Dear SoCal: no problem:
1) change thge regents
2) change the administrators
3) change the faculty
4) change the student body
5) get a practice facility
6) lower the gpa to equal that of UCLA
7) require students to attend at least a few games in order to boost their "holistic profile."
7) OK----cancel #7
8) suspend any student who is caught walking in the opposite direction on telegraph ave on important game days
8a) only 4 transgressions during the year will be permitted before the suspension takes effect
9) require that at least 20% of the cheerleaders rival the beauty of UCLA and USC cheerleaders. Not constitutional????not politically correct???Not "inclusive?" How badly do you want to win??????Many things in life are trade-offs---or, to quote a political philosopher, " if you want to make an omelet, you have to break a few eggs."
10) ursa----I hope this offends you---be offended, have a cocktail and determine how badly you want to win..Me???I want to win badly..So, I'm willing to break a few eggs to make that terrific omelet. au devoir---time for a cocktail & an omelet.

Are you saying the university was completely different back then?

dear Calalum: Not only different, but, totally superior. The students were interested in the major sports. Nobody burned Berkeley down every time someone farted without authorization. free speech was normal and natural. Students were not snowflakes who went into a childish, temper tantrum when confronted with an opposing viewpoint. Students were afforded due process at hearings. Telegraph ave did not resemble third world living conditions. The administrators, and faculty, were, for the most part fairly moderate in political and cultural viewpoint s. Nobody cowered in fear of "offending someone" . "hate speech " and hate activities" were nowhere to be found in the constitution, and, if you brought up those concepts back then, folks would have recommended either therapy or a good, swift spanking from their parents. In other words, history did not begin with the Beatles. Happy holidays...

Fair enough, HTP. btw, I'm tired of your inaccurate attack on the Board of Regents. I have a lot of bones to pick with the Regents (full disclosure: my sister-in-law was a Regent some time back), but they have had NO impact on Cal athletics. Are you really suggesting that the Regents mandated that Cal have fewer resources for sports than UCLA??? In case you aren't aware, there is only one Board of Regents for the WHOLE university system.

The average Cal student today runs circles around the average Cal student of 50 years ago in terms of academic achievement and work ethic. To risk another low blow, but one fully deserved, The vast majority of your class would be going to UC Merced because you wouldn't sniff an acceptance from Cal today against today's students.

People do what they have to do to succeed. When I was 10 or so, I assessed my situation and realized that I could spend my youth watching TV and playing sandlot sports and still get into Cal, so why work harder? Believe me, I felt like I was sacrificing when I had to take my valuable personal time to complete assignments and projects for school, but I knew I needed at least a 3.2 to get accepted to Cal.

If I was 10 today, I'd be preparing for my AP future AP classes, entering Makers Faires and organizing the world to fight climate change. Different times call for different measures.

Yep. Those presidents did some bad things. At least they were qualified to be POTUS and they had some great accomplishments. tRump is the most wholly unqualified person to ever hold the office. If it is your position that tRump is a victim of the Deep State, how do you explain all those in his sphere that pled guilty to felonies? And what is it with this Deep State anyway? Are they like the Keystone Cops? With all their power they couldn't keep a buffoon from winning.

Yes. Your generation was the embodiment of the perfect blend of intelligence and well roundedness. We should all bow at your greatness. That is if significant problems with extreme alcoholism and sexual assault is what you classify as well rounded.

The reason why it was so easy for you to get into Cal is because your generation prevented much more talented people than you a proper education and opportunity so you were competing against a fraction of the applicants. I would argue that it is the result of allowing the much more talented riff raff in that has you upset with the current social climate at the university.

I stand by my statement. Your generation of Cal students were vastly intellectually inferior and mentally weaker than the students you mock today. Every year that goes by your generation is losing respect with the attitude you display here.

I have known younger alums and students who are very much into sports generally and Cal football and basketball specifically who didn't go to many games. You know why? Because they had to work their asses off to get into Cal and they are going to make the most of their opportunity by developing their own talents rather than watch others. That is not a bad thing. No idea why you think others have to have the same interest you had/have.

By the way, people should actually read things first before they say that thing is required reading.

'Extreme alcoholism?" Sexual assault?? mentally inferior??If I thought it would benefit you, I would recommend an intervention with qualified mental health professionals. You also need a good spanking. Ah---the impertinence of the young--on full display for the discerning to observe. Do something productive. Buy a vowel. Anything. Did a little research. When you got into Cal, the university accepted everyone who applied who met the minimum UC eligibility requirements. Cal didn't really become Cal until significant changes were made after your time. Must admit that surprised me. Didn't know that history. In your case that explains a lot.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Cal has been highly competitive since long before you were born. You should stop insulting people who are older than you and have experienced more of the realities of life than you have. It's an understatement to say that you're very naive.

When I was a kid in the 1950s Cal was already an elite research university. In the 1960s I was a good but not exceptional high school student and got admitted to Cal with no problems. In the 1990s my daughter had to work a lot harder than I did to stand out in high school and I think today's high school students have to work harder still. In my day Cal's acceptance rate was over 80%, now it's around 15%. So today's students may be no brighter or better prepared than those in my era but they clearly face a lot more competition.

At least with respect to law, I found many lawyers that went to elite law schools and worked for big law firms to be nervous little anal retentive pu$$ies in depositions and in the courtroom. So all this superiority of the modern student often doesn't translate into jack $h@it in the real world. You just have to be smart enough and have some stones.

I agree, in my experience graduation from a big-name school is no guarantee of intelligence or competence. Likewise graduation from a lower-tier school is no indicator of deficiency. I was only addressing the difficulty of getting admitted.

He started it and you are wrong on the facts. From Frontline "History of Admissions at UC Berkeley"

Quote:

The crown jewel of the University of California system, Berkeley is arguably one of the most selective public universities in the country. In 1999, it denied over 70 percent of its applicants. But the competition to get into the University of California's flagship campus wasn't always so steep. Before 1960, 15 percent of California's high school graduates were eligible to attend the school, and until 1964, the school admitted anyone who met its requirements. But competition increased after the 1960 adoption of the Master Plan for Higher Education in California, spearheaded by then president of the University of California system, Clark Kerr.
I don't give a damn how old he is and. He can shut his damned mouth with the constant trashing of the fabulous student body at Cal. He is a complete ignoramus and is a rude ass. I'm sorry if you feel caught in the crossfire, but everything I said to him is factually true. It is an undeniable fact that many of the students admitted into his class would not be admitted to Berkeley, or UCLA or UC San Diego or Davis or Santa Barbara or Santa Cruz or Irvine if they were applying today. I'm sorry if that truth is difficult. If he wants to continue to attack today's Cal students I will defend them with vigor. If he is willing to stop attacking Cal students, I will not have to speak of this truth. By the way today Cal denies close to 85% which is higher than in 1999 and slightly higher than the 0% in 1960.

And by the way, I am 50 years old and have experienced quite a bit of life so you can stop talking to me like I'm a child. He and I are both adults. He has earned my disrespect.
