I always want one guy who you can put on someone who is hurting you, especially when the game is on the line. Dyson proved himself to be that guy this year (much improved defense from past)

Now coach doesn't have that tool in his toolbox.

Maybe, but this board values defense more than any other college basketball fanboard I've ever seen.

Agree about JHD and the toolbox. However, I thought Paris played his best defensive game last night (primarily with Pritchard - until he ran out of steam and Pritchard stepped up.) Overall, the team did a very good job denying penetration and slashing with strong fundamental footwork and playing the angles.

And it may 'seem' that you are the only one that talks about defense, but I 'seem' to be 25 pounds lighter than I am. Hmmmm

I'm with you, HD. I've always thought JHD deserves minutes because of his defense. Missed him last night. I don't think Oregon does 10-18 from 3 with JHD out there.
I think your post rings true. A skilled, fast, athletic defender with a nose for the ball, but not a good offensive player, has been a feature of many teams. They have a role to play, and last night, when Pritchard and the Ducks went on that run in the 2nd half, would have been a perfect time to insert JHD, who might have been able to stop the momentum before the Ducks went from being behind to going in front with a 12 point lead. Bernie Simpson, A.J. Diggs, Dennis Gates, Prentice McGruder, and others were examples of defensive specialists at Cal, though McGruder did start one year, I think, and was a good point guard also, offensively speaking. Sam Singer also became a very good defender, better at that than at offense, but he had some offensive skills, penetrating and passing.

These players were all without much offensive skill, and usually could not play for long stretches of time, before they became a liability on offense. In the past, JHD had a lot of trouble handling the ball and not losing it, and he missed most of his shots, whether it was a layup or a jumper. Missing a shot usually leads to a defensive rebound for the opponent, so in that respect, it is almost as bad for the team as a turnover. I would only use JHD off the bench as a defensive specialist, to come in the game and put the clamps on a hot shooter like Pritchard was last night, or come in and try and get some steals and loose balls and break up the opposing team's momentum. And I would only play him about 5 minutes in a stretch, unless he was playing better offensively, not turning the ball over, making bad decisions, or missing several shots.

I agree on Austin's defense. He has been working very hard on it, and it shows. If this is the new Austin, a tougher defender, then it would be great not only for him, and for the current Cal team, but I think it would be good for the future. What this does is allow Austin to be on the floor more, and not put as much pressure on Brown to step up and run the offense. Brown is a good defender, but on offense he does not shoot well, and often gets out of control on the dribble. It will allow Fox to use Brown judiciously, as a more of a defensive player off the bench, to bring more defense to the team when he comes in, while he studies and learns the point guard's role in Fox's offense, and practices his shooting. Brown is just a freshman, with potential, but not quite ready to take over the reins of the team at this point, IMO.

I don't know what you are reading. There are plenty of fans on this board who write about defense. This board is full of loyal fans who have suggestions for what the team is currently doing wrong. This season, the offense is sub-par. So we concentrate on writing about the offense, what is wrong with it, how to fix it. Under Wyking the defense was not very good, and it was discussed here. Under Cuonzo, the defense improved, but many fans wanted more offense from such star players, so we talked more about how to fix the offense.

More than offense or defense, what most fans seem to write about is the players. Analysis, praise, contempt, all of it, sometimes about a player's offensive liabilities, sometimes about his defensive liabilities, and often about a player's athletic abilities or lack of same. But those fans who focus their interest on players tend to appreciate offensive skills more than defensive ones. These days many recruits arrive in college as fine offensive players, but having few defensive skills. I think defensive skills are not of much interest, either to the young player or the fans, unlike offensive skills. Many players have to learn defensive skills in college, and often that takes a year or two to master.

In any case, I have written volumes here about Pete Newell (and been roundly pilloried for doing so) and mostly about his defense, and his fundamentals, not as much about his offense or his players. Newell won his championships with great defense, both individual and team defense, and he would never have won those titles without great D.

I never thought Cal would ever have a player that would be more overrated than A.J. Diggs. Clearly I was wrong.

A.J. Diggs overrated? By whom? A.J. Diggs was a walk-on, rated by no one, save maybe his family and friends.

A. J Diggs was born to steal basketballs. Couldn't shoot a lick but he could steal it from anyone in the PAC10. Only Jason Kidd had more steals per 40 minutes at Cal than A.J. Diggs. A. J. usually already had his first steal in any game as he was walking to the scorer's table to check in to the game. Because he had been sitting on the bench studying the guys he would be guarding and all their moves. Ben Braun said Diggs "could be the smartest player I ever coached." Braun also said A.J. Diggs "could change the complexion of any game."

Harris-Dyson was overrated, and has little offense, but not overrated for defense, but then the rating services give little attention to defense when rating a player. JHD sure can play some defense. JHD was and is plagued by injuries and illness for all of his Cal career, like Al Grigsby, Harper Kamp, Jabari Bird, Ricky Kreklow, and others.

Steals per 40 minutes from sports-reference.com: Apologies to anyone I left out (especially Al Buch, Bernie Simpson, Bobby Wendell, Rusty Critchfield, Prentice McGruder, and Charlie Johnson, as there are no stats I could find for them.
AJ second, and JHD tied for 4th in this list of some very good Cal players.

Jason Kidd 4.1
A.J. Diggs 4.0
Gene Ransom 2.9
Dennis Gates 2.2
Brian Wethers 2.2
Ed Gray 2.2
Juwan Harris-Dyson 2.2
Kevin Johnson 1.8
Shantay Legans 1.8
KJ Roberts 1.8
Keith Smith 1.7
Jorge Gutierrez 1.7
Tyrone Wallace 1.4
Richard Midgley 1.4
Bill Elleby 1.3
Sam Singer 1.2
Kevin Sparks 1.2
Patrick Christopher 1.0
Ayinde Ubaka 0.8
