The "EYE" test. For all the moaning and whining on this board about Fox and how he is not a reincarnation of Wooden, I think we should all be pretty happy with the progress shown thus far this season. The team is both watchable and competitive. The young players are...young. They are inconsistent. They are limited. BUT, they work hard and they are trying to execute a real plan and strategy. The current team is infinitely more watchable than any during the Cuonzo/ Jones era, despite having fewer "stars". Congratulations to Coach Fox and the players for the progress they have made, and the progress they will demonstrate as the season progresses.

Yup and for us to say we SHOULD have won that game, already shows progress.

I think the fact you need to focus on to more fairly evaluate the negative feelings that have been generated is that although the team played in Oakland for 47 years, out of deference to San Francisco fans, none of the series of team owners changed the name to the Oakland Warriors.
Lacob was faced with the same sensitive issue when he moved the team back to SF. However, Lacob chose to follow the same path he takes every time there is a decision to be made involving the city of Oakland: "Oakland, go f yourself!" (Oakland has had to make claims against Lacob twice for parade cost reimbursement and now for his share of the cost of improvements to the Arena).*

I hadn't heard the name "Golden State" was out of deference to San Francisco fans. This article says the name arose out of a supposed bluff by Warrior owner Franklin Mieuli, who was negotiating with Oakland and San Diego to move the Warriors and play half the games in Oakland and half in San Diego, thus the Golden State name. Oakland came through with a good lease, and the San Diego games were moved to Oakland. The uniforms were already made with the Golden State name, and some said Mieuli was too cheap to rename the team and make new uniforms. Mieuli was forced to move the team out of SF, because it had lost money every year but one, and the city had no interest in building an arena for a money-losing team. I was sorry to see the name change to Golden State at the time, and even though I live in San Fran, I thought he should have changed the name to Oakland Warriors. All NBA teams are traditionally named for cities, not states. As for the 49ers, don't get me started on that one.

I'm not sure this venture will pay off. Lacob is moving the Warriors at the peak of their popularity, and the product is already not what it was the last few years. It will take draft after draft and trades to make it good again. San Francisco fans are harder to please than East Bay fans, I feel. We'll see if they keep coming in huge numbers.
Except, of course, those that aren't: Utah Jazz, Minnesota T'wolves, Indiana Pacers; I'm pretty sure those aren't cities.

I'm loving everything I am seeing about Fox so far. There was a lot of controversy with the fan base on his hire, but he seems like a very good teacher. These same players from last year are showing much improved play. Even Lars has improved his game in the last two months.

Did you watch Lars in the last game? Did you watch him at the start of the season? Even though 7 feet tall, he was so slow of foot and hand at the start that I cringed when he was in the game. The speed of game is coming to him, and that is usually a combo of experience and coaching.

We are an under talented team, but Fox has done a lot more in a short time than WJ did in two years.

Thiemann just had one decent game. Hey, I'm glad he did and I hope he follows it up with even more (and eventually, he probably will).

You want to talk meteoric improvement over the course of one freshman season, look at Connor Vanover last year. And no, that is not an attempt to make a statement about past or current coaching.

Fox is a professional. I hope he is able to accumulate some better talent so we can see how he really is as a coach. I may not have been a huge fan of the hire back in the spring, but he's our coach now and I'm pulling for him to succeed.

What do you classify as good? You don't think they will be good next year when Curry and Thompson are back? I would expect that next year with those guys back, a high draft choice, Green healthy and having developed their bench this year they will be a very solid team. I don't see that it will take draft after draft and trades to make them good again.

Believe me, I have bigger things that I am more worked up about. As to this, I'm guessing Oakland is not your home town. Hey, Lacob can call his team whatever the hell he wants. I get it: The move from The Town back to The City will be a net positive for the franchise, even if he loses some fans from the East Bay (like me).
I was born in OakTown (old Civic Center Hospital) and to me, The City is much better than The Town.

Thanks Ursa, for the corrections, but traditionally speaking, all NBA teams were named for cities. I should have used the words "were named for cities" not "are named for cities". If I can figure out how to switch to a bigger font for proofreading, maybe I can do a better job of it.

The Warriors were actually the first NBA team to be named for a state when they changed their name from San Francisco Warriors to Golden State Warriors in 1971. The Indiana Pacers began as an ABA team, and kept their team name when the leagues were merged and they joined the NBA in 1976. The Jazz were known as the New Orleans Jazz, until they moved to Salt Lake and changed their name to the Utah Jazz in 1979. The Minnesota Timberwolves NBA franchise was started in 1989, with that name. So it was Franklin Mieuli who broke with tradition and paved the way, so to speak, for more teams to have a state name and not a city name.

Don't forget the $17 million trade exception for Iguodala and the $28 million in cap space Russell now takes up if they trade him. Think they can be pretty creative with all those three chips and get a couple of $5-10 million role players to add a of depth, and maybe even a major star. A high lottery pick would do wonders for the cap situation with 4 years of limited rookie contract.

I don't think they can simply do a sign and trade to for a max contract player next summer because they'd exceed the apron (could be wrong, but that was the issue of not spending the trade exception this year after the Russell trade), but there could be other ways to free up space for a max player.

Yeah, I said I get it. I just don't have to like it. Especially the way they were in Oakland for 47 years and never used the name. Then, they move back to The City, claiming they're going to keep the "Golden State" name (which nobody ever really liked anyway) and now they haven't even won ten games there and it looks like they're readying folks for a quick transition back to the San Francisco Warriors. (Granted, them winning ten games is actually amounting to quite a bit of time, not the 2-3 weeks it used to take them in Oakland, heh heh.)

I bet Lacob really hated that time the fans booed him.

Actually, I'm not. Never been particularly passionate about the NBA or the Warriors. But unlike the roster they have this year, next year they will have the three stars that just a few years ago lead them to a championship and then the most wins in history. Not saying they will win a championship but how are they far away from "good"?

Sad, but probably true. Except that much or most of the dumps seem to be in doorways, not on sidewalks, and therefore less pleasant and a little harder to clean up.

What do you classify as good? You don't think they will be good next year when Curry and Thompson are back? I would expect that next year with those guys back, a high draft choice, Green healthy and having developed their bench this year they will be a very solid team. I don't see that it will take draft after draft and trades to make them good again.
I like your optimism. You are a true fan.

Actually, I'm not. Never been particularly passionate about the NBA or the Warriors. But unlike the roster they have this year, next year they will have the three stars that just a few years ago lead them to a championship and then the most wins in history. Not saying they will win a championship but how are they far away from "good"?
I'm not either, so why bother arguing? If you can predict the future enough to be sure Curry and Klay will be just as good after the treatment for injuries, and their recoveries, then more power to you. Durant was a huge piece, maybe the most important piece of that roster which won 3 years ago, and he is gone. Another huge piece is Iguodala. He is gone. Another very important piece is Livingston. He is gone. If you can predict that the Warriors will have developed their bench, then go for it, which you are doing. I am skeptical, and I hope you will allow me to be so.

I don't give a sh@t about the Warriors anymore, other than Klay, but this year may be a blessing in disguise which helps to partially remedy bench play issues once the studs return.

Now how come on the game played Christmas Day on the end it said "Golden State " again and the on the logo on the middle of the court there was no words at all? Is it because it was a national televised game?
Warriors in The Town jerseys, with that oak tree design at half court on Christmas Day. (Game in SF, of course.)

Lacob, believing himself to be "light years" smarter than anybody else, figures he can keep the Oakland fan base by making this switch ever so gradually, kind of like the story about lobsters never knowing they're being boiled if you start by putting them in cold water and turning up the heat gradually. Probably one of his genius sons who came up with the idea that whatever floor design is at halfcourt can be changed from game to game and used to further their marketing plan.
