Lets start the line at 4. Though I think that is vulnerable to a gutsy bet on the over.

I am NOT convinced that "tough guy" is going to work in the Pac-12 but maybe. I would ask, however, if we wanted to go "tough guy" why not hire Howland? Seriously, what was JK thinking????

I don't think you will have a Wyking level exodus. We should have won today against a decent team. We have become somewhat respectable. Couldn't say that the last two years with Wyking. I would have said maybe Kelly was first in line like 2 weeks ago, but seems like we are featuring him in our offense and he's starting to step up. I can't see Bradley or Anticevich leaving. Maybe Klonaras or Kuany if they don't get any PT?

BC is NOT decent. We are going to win, PERHAPS, 3 games in conference so a third year of single digit wins.

LOL but Ben kept saying they went into Notre Dame and beat them, so they must be good.

Braun is NOT a good color guy (either). I really dislike games he calls. While Walton gets old at least you can listen for what MIGHT come out of his mouth. Monty consistently teaches you something. Braun reads the same notes on his cheat sheet over...and over...and over.

Well, at least your message is consistent.

Personally I see a big difference between the last two years and right now. But I'm not expecting an 8 seed in the tournament just because we switched the coach.

Losing to two colleges (not universities): Not Good.

Losing to three local lesser conference schools: Not Good.
All by double digit: Horrible.

Having the worst non-conference record in the Pac-12: Not Good.

Recruiting: Not Good.

If in the next game loses to a non-scholarship school, then we have to wonder if JK is the right man for hiring/firing coaches.

Go Bears!

I'll say 3. Two of the three will be our most improved players over the course of the season, as they see they can use that as a stepping stone to something better. And recruiting is going so well that we will see this sort of pattern repeated for years. Being a Cal fan is the best!

Does it have to be an actual transfer? Because international players sometimes just go home

Fox is a 20th century coach trying to win in a Steph curry/James harden new world of basketball.

The game has changed dramatically over the last 20 or so years. It's not about just passing the ball around aimlessly and dumping it into the low post.

It's about constant movement, off ball screens, creating mismatches and as many pick and rolls as you can run. Shooting threes is ok. Getting a mismatch and iso'ing your guy is ok.

I'm not saying we need to be the rockets and boil basketball down to a math equation. But I think it'd be great to have a coach (and an AD for that matter) who at least understands what the rockets (and other more analytical teams) are trying to accomplish.

I can just imagine fox during his pregame speech

Fox: how many times are we going to pass before we shoot? How many!!!!!

Team: four (unenthusiastically)

Fox: four!!!

The shot quality selection has regressed dramatically.
Off-balance, not squared up weak hand scoop shots with plenty of time on the clock.
The Don Coleman effect remains.

Yeah, we definitely missed an opportunity to be innovative and I think Cal needs to be innovative to win at a high level in football and men's basketball. I'm sure we will have Fox around for at least 5 years. Maybe then.

fox has been on the job a short time. patience please. we need a really good scorer/shooter to compliment bradley. if we can recruit that athlete we can get better faster.

Yes, patience.

Also, that we are weak at the point has not helped our team. Fox has had little time to remedy these two problems.

I am not critical of Fox. I feel he is doing a pretty good job with the hand he has to play.

I read elsewhere we have offered 2020 PG or SG (depending on which site you read) Tyrin Lawrence from Georgia. I don't see a lot of stars but he seems to have plenty of offers from respectable programs.

Cal is currently #202 in Sagarin's "Recent" and last in the PAC-12. If it is any comfort, UCLA is nearly as bad at #176 in Recent.

Cal finished last year at #182 in Recent, so at this point we do appear to have taken a step back, with better coaching not quite compensating for player defections.

Last year's schedule was #70, this year's is #87.

We will be roughly 4 point underdogs at home against Harvard.

Our best shots for wins in conference will be UCLA, WSU and maybe OSU.

Recent offer by California to Sunrise Academy, Kansas combo guard Tyrin Lawrence. He has been discovered, In rapid order he has 12 offers with several Power 5 school offers, notably including an offer from the current #1 team in the country, Gonzaga. He is sporting Power 5 offers from Ole Miss,Georgia State, Kansas State, Vanderbilt, & California. Clearly these coaches have see some significant talent in this 6'4" combo guard.

Just because you hate it, doesn't make it any less true. Guys want to play and win and today's culture allows guys to go where they want. Plus, it seems like Fox's expectations of players in the details would really turn some of the kids off, especially if they aren't playing much.

There are 2 players who aren't going to transfer: Austin and South. Both have used up their eligibility. I expect everyone else to enter the portal. I also expect all of the recruits to de-commit. Next year's team will be all walk-ons from an open tryout in September.

Just because some posters hate Fox doesn't necessarily mean that the players do.

I know SCT is angry, but unless he has more insight into the locker room than most of the rest of us, he's blowing smoke.

One (or two) four star type recruits can turn the trajectory of the program.

Look at Wilcox, he finally got a high 4 star in Rogers. It took him 3 years and he had way more spots to get a high recruit. But the tide is turning over there. It can happen faster in hoops with the smaller rosters.

Cal has had several recruits under Wilcox that were rated as high as Rogers. Chase Garbers being one of them.

That's true. Although seems like we've had such a run of bad luck/evaluation of Elite11 type QBs, I think I was slightly skeptical. Let's just say Rogers looks like an offensive playmaker that Wilcox has generally not been able to attract. I think he's going to be a game changer.

Remigio, Street, and Hunter have similar ratings to Rogers, though Street did not have a particularly good 2019 (ending in injury).

Here is the issue.....already we see Fox exhibit the "it is their fault, not mine." What kind of d*** tells a bunch of 19 and 20 year olds that they "ruined my family's christmas - when all of those kids are, for the most part, spending xmas NOT with their families so they can play Harvard (and likely practice/walk through that game on Thursday). It is SO old school but without the record of success of a guy like Howland who can say "I did it this way and got to final fours and numerous second weekends....and here are some NBA'ers that will vouch for me and show up at practice."

I really hope people bet the under hard and we end up with 1 or 2, max. They do NOT need to be pampered and told Jones was "OK." But I cant see how you pull this tough guy routine with a roster which is NOT your kids and expect it to work. I mean Paris is likely trying just to get to March and then to May so he can (hopefully) walk. Worrying about Mark fox having a nice xmas and thus working on his game more than he is probably is not at the top. (and if he thinks this works then play and start Brown. Sure we will struggle but (in theory) that is the kid that bought your "tough guy" routine and is your long term answer at the point.)

I agree wholeheartedly with HD. If SCT is not able to provide quotes anywhere as damning as what I had read before seeing the posts that came after his post, then he should apologize to the entire forum.
