So I was in LA over Christmas and decided to check out Sierra Canyon at the Damien Classic, as they were the number one team in the country (until they lost in the finals of the tournament). They have 2 or 3 great players, 2 or 3 very good players, 2 famous players (Zaire Wade son of Dwayne and Bronny James son of Lebron), and one player who is 7'3''. His name is Harold Yu, and I believe he came to Sierra Canyon from China. A quick internet search says that Cal is the only team that has offered. Does Cal know something that other school don't know?

My short answer is no. Even at the (very high) high school level he did not have proper mobility. He got blocked by the opposing center who might be 6'6''. His hook shot is supposed to be his goto move, but it did not look good.

On the bight side, he seemed to be at a good weight. And his free throw shooting was nice, indicating he might eventually become a shooter. He is a willing and able passer.

Here is some recent video:

Looking at that video he would start for Cal right now, LOL.

I don't see lightning speed but I do see some skill and coordination.

sounds like he's a junior? yeah, he's raw

but assuming he is a junior he will get stronger, and when he gets stronger, he will gain quickness and a little more jumping

if he can be a rim protector, post defender and rebounder than I say sign him up!

Offense would be a bonus (and it looks like he has a decent shot)

He would be an instant fan fav

Pretty slow, and a very soft player. Yet he seems to have plenty of court awareness for a junior, and does everything pretty well for his size and age. He looks like a better shot than Vanover, with more shots in his repertoire. He'd need a lot of work in the training/weight room, but I can understand the offer. I agree with Civil Bear that he would start for us right now, and I'd add that we might score a few more points per game with him in the lineup. I hope we get him, and I hope he develops into something.

Most of that Sierra Canyon team would start at Cal right now.

Too bad we don't have enough scholarships left. Otherwise, maybe we should sign'em up. If we still had Wyking Jones, he could kick some players off the team to free up scholarships. Mark Fox is not Wyking Jones, however. I don't think he is the kind of coach who would kick players off his team to free up scholarships, but I don't know his history in that regard.

He's only a Junior so he will have another year competing against faster players. Slower than Max Zhang but for sure more sturdy than Max! Maybe we can develop a pipeline to 7-3" players from CHina!

3 or 4 at Sierra Canyon would start at Cal right now, one of whom (Amari Bailey), is only a sophomore. But Harold Yu is way behind Lars T. or Andre Kelly. It is not even close. Maybe it is not clear in video, but it could not be more clear in person.

Which does not mean a 7'3'' project is a waste of a scholarship.

Looks like he has more in his tool box and footwork than Lars but like you said it could just be the video which could make anyone look smooth.

One thing I couldn't find in my own quick search is his age. Guys that size typically develop later, and he's got another high school season and a couple of summer runs to go before hitting college so maybe the thinking is that the size won't go away, he's got some basketball skills, and the mobility will improve as he gets older. That stuff can be improved a lot with the right training program.

Just as a head's up, Sierra Canyon plays Celestine's LI Lutheran team on 2/6. Celestine's team is legit with two other guys going to P5 schools and another junior with offers from Louisville and teams of that ilk.

He reminds me of some of the bigs that were recruited by Braun - he's got some underlying basketball skills but isn't there yet athletically. If he comes to Cal and gets coached he may be a moderate contributor the first few years then help the team his last two years. That's not always super exciting but those guys can help your program be successful.
