1. Colorado (12-2) #13
2. Oregon (12-3) #16
3. Arizona (11-3) #31
4. Stanford (12-2) #36
5. USC (12-2) #41
6. Utah (10-4) #65
7. UW (10-4) #69
8. ASU (9-5) #102
9. OSU (10-3) #123
10. WSU (10-5) #126
11. UCLA (7-7) #192
12. Cal (6-8) #219

PAC-12 is currently the #6 conference and depending how league play goes could see 5 teams make the Tournament.

The only consolation for Cal fans is UCLA is almost as bad and they don't have our practice in lowering expectations. How is it this is the year we only play UCLA once and only at Pauley?

This weekend is probably our best opportunity for another win this season.

it's bad news that WSU is so much higher than Cal

Although UCLA is close, we don't play them at home, and they have a lot of length, which is our bane

How many other UC campuses are ahead of Cal and UCLA? I'm not sure I want to see the answer...

the secret is better players. its tough to recruit top 100 athletes as they all want to play for a winner. under cuonzo and wyking we had very little success. fox has his hands full. go bears.

FYI, UCLA did not win both games in Washington. They lost the second game to Washington State.

crazy early goings in pac12

UW beats USC by 32
USC's 3 bigs took 40 of USC's 65 shots, going a combined 20%

Is that good coaching?

(OSU beats Colorado)

Well, the quarterback is usually the best athlete on his team, so you could start with taking a look at him at Haas. Remigio and Polk might be interesting.

How about Weaver? Anyone he fouls will know they've been fouled. After they regain consciousness.

I thought Sagarin's system considered wins and losses and victory margin, but any system that would rank Stanford as #36 doesn't seem to factor in the strength of one's opponents. Stanford has played only one AP-ranked team, Kansas, and got clobbered by them, and has played NO other good teams so far.

Cal has already beaten three teams ranked ahead of them on this list, Cal Baptist (by 20 points), UC Davis, and Fresno State. Why should we listen to Sagarin?

You are right, and he is probably the best athlete on the team, not Garbers. Shooters, IMO, are born, and also he is a bit oversized for a point guard.

Sagarin uses all the games, who you played, who your opponents played, who they in turn played...it is an internal mathematical algorithm and does not rely on the AP (though AP voters may peek at Sagarin). It becomes more reliable as the season progresses and there is more data available. The Recent measure also uses all the games, but weights the more recent games more heavily.

However, for specific examples:
Sagarin thinks Butler (14-1, 1st place in the Big East) is good (#4 in Recent) and Stanford lost to them by 1 point on a "neutral" court in the Midwest. Stanford lost by 20 to Kansas (Jerod Haase's other Alma Mater), but Sagarin has them #2. Those are Stanford's only two losses.

They beat Oklahoma who is 10-3 and Sagarin ranks at #44 by 19 points.

#36 is not a stretch at all.

They beat Oklahoma who is 10-3 and Sagarin ranks at #44 by 19 points.

I don't know Sagarin from saccharin, but from what I read, he has not fully released his method for ranking to the public. I used AP Polls because they were conveniently listed in sports-reference for Stanford and their opponents in Stanford's schedule. I prefer using the Coaches' poll in both basketball and football, because I figure they are coaches and should be able to evaluate most of the better teams, even if some of them maybe can't compete with those teams themselves. Of course, they could all be Wykings, and that might not make for a good poll.

Stanford played Oklahoma on Nov 25, and at that time neither Stanford or Oklahoma was ranked in the Coaches' top 25. Stanford played Butler on Nov 26, and at that time neither Stanford or Butler was ranked in the Coaches' top 25. The following week of Dec 6, Butler became ranked in the Coaches' poll at #24, and has moved steadily upward in ranking to #6 in the latest Coaches' poll of Jan 6. Both Stanford and Oklahoma remain unranked in this current poll.

Wouldn't it be more accurate and fair to compare Sagarin's ranking of Butler, Oklahoma, and Stanford for the day before they played each other, rather then the current Sagarin rankings, which supposedly tell us how good the teams are now, 6 weeks after they played each other? Game rosters could have changed, and teams could have improved, stayed the same, or are not as good as they were back in November.

I can't seem to find the Sagarin rankings for Nov 24 or earlier, before Stanford played Oklahoma, and Butler. Do you have a link?

Sagarin is entirely statistics based. The idea is every team's absolute strength is an unknown to be revealed over the course of a season. There is no bias "because it is Duke and Coach K." It is based entirely on results. The more results the better.

Before any games have been played, the AP rankings are just a guess. Once a full season has been played it it easy to go back and see who really were the good teams that year. Again, the more information you know, the better.

Now, rather than having a fixed strength to be revealed (his Predictor), it is possible that teams improve (or get worse) over the course of a season. That is what his Recent (with more recent games weighted more heavily) helps with.

For example, Stanford's current Predictor is #71, but their Recent is #35. That means they have improved over the course of the season so far.

Oklahoma's Predictor is #56, but their Recent is #45, so they have improved but not as much.

Cal's Predictor is #192 and our Recent is #223, indicating the team is probably not playing as well as earlier, even given the opposition.

(Walkon?) QB Robby Rowell was Acalanes' MVP at PG. There are videos at MaxPrep. He looks like a good passer and 3 pt shooter. At 6'2" 220 he has good size (better than walkon PG Orender at 5'11 180).

The best basketball player on the football team is probably Kuony Deng, who at 6'6" 220 with long arms and great hops always seemed more a basketball player than an ILB. He was an 4A All-State player in Virginia and his league's MVP averaging 19.2 ppg on a team that went 23-5 losing in the state semi-finals. His video shows decent shooting and the speed, energy and tenacity on defense he brings to the football field. His offers out of high school were nearly all for basketball, with his one football offer from Virginia Military Institute.

Between the two, I am sure Wilcox would be more encouraging of Rowell playing both sports.

My goodness, Rowell would have a decent chance of being our starting PG. and/or the second coming of Randy Duck.

Also, imagine Deng and JHD on D at the same time.

We are just fans having fun in a season that needs all the fun we can muster. We don't actually control anything.

Yet every time someone actually does it, it is a great success and helps the team. And it doesn't even use a scholarship.

Exactly. Which is why I was suggesting converting an offensive lineman into a point guard.

True, but that is because said players typically have never shown the interest or desire to put in the work to be successful in the secondary sport. In Deng's case, he was more highly regarded in basketball out of HS.

Damn.

I was going to ask if we had any chance of beating out Arizona in his recruitment.
