1) They have a dedicated practice facility. Guess who doesn't have one of those.
2) Built through hard work by an AD that "gets" marketing. I have long said that the best thing Cal could do is go raid SDSU's athletic department to figure out the business side of things. That said, I have seen some things on the football side of the house that suggests Cal is getting better from the long dark prior of the Mike Williams years
3) With the departure of the Chargers (and the changes in the cable sports landscape of removing a lot of Lakers/Clipps games from our area) SDSU basketball is approaching U of A levels of engagement in the local community. If you like hoops SDSU is your option.
3.5) It helps that literally every 3rd person, it seems, in this town is an Aztec alumni.
4) Unlike a place called "Cal" SDSU listened to ITS hall of fame coach who said "You know, I have built a pretty good foundation and have this long time assistant who is ready to seemlessly step in.
5) Even then the transition wasn't particularly smooth
6) It also helps that SDSU plays with a HUGE chip on their shoulder - something Cal is never likely to replicate - If every 3rd person is an SDSU alumn ever other conversation with them is about how sad it is that they are not part of the Pac12, that the P5 are *******s, and that SDSU would rise to greatness if the Pac12 would just let them in
7) Typically this is when I scoff at them and ask when they will become a doctorate granting institution and they, in turn, point at some rub goldberg arrangement that lets them semi-bypass the prohibition on granting PhDs by the cal state system.
