There's a very revealing video about the conversation that was held with the two basketball coaches and faculty and staff @ Alumni House. Both coaches come off as articulate (even if she's an ex-Furdie) and thoughtful. Worth watching.

Dear Ursa: I'm happy that both Charmin & Fox are "articulate & thoughtful." Einstein was also articulate & thoughtful. I'm only guessing, but, I'm betting he couldn't coach a lick. Most coaches pretty much try to sell the same thing. Thge successful coaches persuade the kids to buy what they are selling. This is almost always a function of personality . Some kids respond to love. Some kids respond to fear. Most successful coaches have both love & fear in their quiver. Most successful coaches are geniuses in knowing when to employ either tactic when trying to motivate their charges. Of course, having a good-looking wife who can cook killer pancakes now & then is also part of the dynamic. Lute Olsen knew when to use his wifes' cooking talents when trying to recruit certain kids who were susceptible to the butter & syrup routine. You also need the right assistants. Do you have the personality to lure top-notch assistants to implement what you are selling. i used to be impressed by intelligence & articulation. of course, I used to go to Church. Along the way, I have learned to be persuaded by the intangible qualities which usually surpass mere intelligence & articulation. Lowering our GPA to be the same as UCLA will also do wonders to improve intelligence & articulation. Pancakes!!!!!!That's the ticket...

Whatever the heck that is that I'm following, I'll say this much: It sure is reassuring in the closing minutes of a very close game to know that we have a plan for success and, at a minimum, an even chance of winning, as opposed to watching a bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut of with a small chance of prevailing.

Dear Bearister: I re-read my post and wasn't confused at all. My main point was that intelligence & articulation, if taken in a vacuum, are not sure-fire indicators of success. Anyone ( and I mean anyone) can be programmed to stand in front of an audience predisposed to nodding their heads and say boilerplate pablum. ie..We are going to do this the right way--we are going to support our student-athletes--we are going to have fun--we're looking for kids who fit the Cal mold--we will never compromise our values on the way to success--we are family--we are aware of our tradition--we're hiring the best possible people to implement our goals--we make sure our athletes understand that education comes first--no---we don't pay as much as other schools because we are more well-rounded and more balanced ---and, yes, we continue to explore sites for thge basketball facility. Thank you, and, GO BEARS!!!! I don't mean to be cynical and/or snarky, but, if you have heard the above remarks 567,987 times at the Alumni House, you tend to to reach for thge bourbon sooner rather than later.

I am glad you weren't confused by your own post! (but then my psychotic patients weren't confused by their delusions, either)

dear Ursa: You are a practicing psychologist or psychiatrist??if so, you need a lot more practice. if I didn't know better, I would say that your comment was mean. i meant no personal disrespect in my post. I only meant that I was surprised that you placed so much stock in rehearsed pablum. Charmin was 0-8 in conference the last time I looked. As you can see. " intelligence & articulation per se " doesn't necessarily translate to wins on the court. or, are you part of the crowd who says, "I don't care if UCLA just beat us 75-0. Most of their players couldn't get into Cal." In response, I would say, "Exactly.

Have you met Shocky?

yes---i have met Shocky--he was/is immature, annoying and suffered from delusions of grandeur. and, those were his good points. He was, however, always deferential and respectful toward me. BTW, if you think I am annoying and immature now, you should have seen me when I was younger. I have a long way to go, but, i have improved. I used to eat my tie, stutter and throw things at the teacher. Now, I have improved my dietary habits, no longer stutter, but, I still throw things at the teacher. If you were expecting perfection, you have come to the wrong place. and, I still think Travis should have been the hire. If nothing else, fairness & loyalty. One can do worse than honoring fairness & loyalty.

I know you were "offended" when I suggested this before, but
you are seriously funny....and that's a good thing.

Meaning no disrespect; your follow-up post was funny, IMO; was just trying to keep it light.

As for Charmin being 0-8 in conference, this is true (it is also true that she recruited three 5* players for next year, so we'll see how that goes). My link had nothing to do with whether either coach was going to be successful, just that I found the discussion interesting; it is obvious that both have given a lot of thought to issues facing student-athletes. That is all.

Dear Bearup: ' It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood. Will you be my friend?" bless you for your comment. I"ve been trying all my life to be "seriously funny." The downside to my quest is that you are going to offend a lot of people along the way. I got kicked out of St. Ignatius for showing up one day in my pajamas, and, I got kicked out off Lowell for the trivial offense for hanging one of the silly teachers out the window. Some people just can't take a joke. Go Bears..

Dear Ursa: Because you were an Eagle and I was a Wildcat & Indian during the same decade, I'm sure we could exchange lots of interesting stories. One time up at old Anza gym, Johnny mathis kept dunking on me. I told him, that, if he kept doing that, I was going to cry. He kept doing it. I have since concluded that he is not a sensitive person.

His brother Mike used to abuse me on the court, too (and i didn't have the excuse of being short).
