Dear Blue: The "rivalry" is overblown. Nobody cares if we beat Stanford now and then but consistently finish in the bottom half of the conference. Kids need to buy what Fox is selling. The jury will be out for another 2-3 years.

Dear GoToHell: I am not "nobody." As such, I completely enjoy the Bears' victory over any furd team! That is, I really relish the moment as you should learn to do so you won't be a "nobody."

Cmon HTP, lighten up a little. Its ALWAYS good to beat Stanfurd, especially when we're not supposed to. Got to enjoy it when you can.

End the game with more points than the opponent.

Blueblood and his ghost writer Walnuts are right. We should relish this win. Big time. There's a huge difference between being 3-3 in conference, just one game out of first in the loss column and closer to first than last versus being 2-4. We've got another home series this week and while we likely won't beat Oregon, we've got a damn good shot at beating Oregon State. That puts us at 4-4 almost at the halfway point. Long way to go obviously, but that smells like real progress to me.

So bummed (will teach me). I figured this as an L so was running errands on a Sunday and didn't block off the time. Killing myself ;-(. Great to see the kids playing defense.

(which honestly I am amazed worked since Furd's front line essentially owned us last game)

Is "not so horrible" the new floor? By that standard Braun's record looks pretty good!

We must never forget the most immutable fact of life. Stanford sucks, BIG TIME!!

The next time I don't relish a victory over the Junior University on the Peninsula will be after the time of death on my death certificate.

II the jury going to be out for 2-3 years.....do the jurors get paid-leave from work?

Yes---it's nice to beat Stanford--but, it's much nicer to field a very competitive program year-in-and-year-out. Two things can be equally true. Quick!!!!!!Which would you rather have---an occasional win against Stanford or a program on a par with the super-stars off the pac-12????Not even close...

You kind of get both if you select the later. Not a very compelling litmus test as written.

I have not really wavered from my observations:

1) Clearly he can coach
2) Clearly he needs to recruit better than year 1 and the incoming kids in year 2 to compete
3) Stars matter
4) Still stings that Aaron Gordon played for the mildcats.
5) All Bear Insder posts should have short paragraphs and even better bullet points and paragraphs less than 5 sentences. Walls of text make my head hurt and I doubt they are helping activate the TARTIS to take us back to 1959.

Yep, an incredibly dumb test.

And not only do you get both if you select the later, but even if the program sucks, it is better to beat Stanford than not. Being happy about beating Stanford doesn't mean being happy about the state of the program.

Hey, htp, QUICK!!!!!! Which would you rather have, two seasons with conference records of 1-17 and 2-16 going 0-2 each season against Stanford, or two seasons with conference records of 2-16 and 3-15 going 1-1 each season against Stanford? I hope it isn't a hard question.

If we're going 2-16 or 3-15 in conference, I'd rather have at least one win each year be against Stanford than against WSU or Oregon St. or Utah or ASU or. . . well, really, anybody. When we suck, it is a small consolation prize (sure, a small prize, but still, a prize) to get to beat Stanford. Doesn't mean we shouldn't fire the coach afterwards, doesn't mean we're unhappy with the overall state of the program, but beating Stanford when we really suck means we DO get to relish the victory. "We suck this bad and you can't beat us? HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!" Sorry, it isn't the same joy if we suck but manage to beat WSU or Utah or OSU or ASU.

If you can't enjoy the moments worth enjoying, then, why bother even living life?

Dear Redless: As Peter Ustinov sarcastically commented in the movie Spartacus, " I tingle." Here's another sobering thought. The players returning ( presumably) to Cal next year scored a whopping 24 points against Stanford. Memo to Coach Fox: Start recruiting perimeter shooters, baby, or start expecting 45 points to be the norm.

HTP, lets bet. The first time we play Furd in basketball next year, I'll take Cal over 45. I'll even let you take the juice, 11 to 10.

Speaking of hardly playing, the Straw Hat Band finally showed up, en masse, and then hardly ever got a chance to play (not even the Star Spangled Banner). Too many ads, ridiculous promotions and piped-in music, when you have a Straw Hat Band to use!

Ursa--like lemmings fans clap! Hate it. Most intense clapping, and often during 9 innings, is at Maryvale, Milwaukee Brewers spring digs in Phoenix. Followed by Beer Barrel Polka and YMCA. Go figure. Maybe we're going "midwest".

I was pretty critical of Ben Braun, but in retrospect, in Cal's history since Newell, Ben Braun was not bad. First of all, he did what he was hired to do, and that was to try and quickly rescue Cal's reputation after the sordid Bozeman affair, get some results on the floor, bring in some interesting players, keep the fans interest up, and sell tickets. He did all that, and won a lot of games as well, especially his first 7 seasons, which were all winning seasons. Campanelli was Cal's first coach since Newell with a winning record, but Braun's record, a .587 winning percentage was higher. Montgomery was a better coach, but Braun had kept the program going in a positive direction. He went to a Sweet 16 with Bozeman's recruits, but he also went to the NCAA four more times and won an NIT championship. He finished in the top 4 spots in the PAC10 several times. Considering all the losing seasons with Herrerias, Padgett, Edwards, and Kuchen, and Jones, we could have hired much worse than Ben Braun, and often did. He ranks 3rd best of Cal coaches I have seen, behind Newell and Montgomery. His worst decision was probably taking the Rice job, where he flopped, but at Cal he did well compared to all the other Cal coaches.
