Wait, why was this thread named after Wally Cleaver?

It was Jerry Mathers that went to Cal, not Tony Dow, btw, but what does that have to do with today's game against Oregon St.?
Clearly, the thread's creator doesn't watch enough old TV. Beaver's friend was named Larry.

Kelley should start.
I'll stand behind Mark Fox on this. Lars' best performances have been to open games and play mostly in the first half. He has a little issue with stamina. In early games before Lars was schooled on how to play at this level, he was somewhat of a liability, but now his defense is improved quite a bit, and the rest of his play is a little better. He protects Kelly from having to play nearly the whole game. I like Kelly much better coming off the bench, where he can come in and provide offensive spark, and he has learned to rebound better, so both Cal's scoring and rebounding get better when Kelly comes in. If Cal starts falling behind by 10-15 points at the start of games, then I might want to think about not starting Lars, but lately, Cal has not been falling behind early, so there is no reason to change. I doubt Kelly can play as hard as he does without fouling out more than Fox would like.

Not so sure I'd call Lars a finisher at this point.

According to hoop-math, he's only got a 51.6% FG% for shots at the rim (which I believe is defined as <3 ft) which is one of the lowest such percentages on the team despite him being the biggest guy. Kelly, by contrast, is at 66%.

https://www.hoop-math.com/California2020.php
No, he is not a finisher. He basically needs much more upper body strength. He does not need just "catch" a ball or get a rebound, he needs to grab and hold it, clutch it with a little force, and then go back up strong with it. He is still a baby, and plays soft. It will come with work and experience, and a few smacks in the face by opponents. I once had a coach who had played in the pro league that eventually became the NBA. Salaries were very low, and the players played hard to earn a living. He taught us that he viewed rebounds as his "bread and butter", because they paid him to rebound, and the more he got, the better he was paid, and was able to put food on his table. He grabbed the ball and held onto it, and would let no one take it away from him.

As to your statistic of 51.6% at the rim, Lars shoots two pointers overall at 58%, so it would indicate than he shoots shots outside 3 feet at over 60%. That is what I like best about his offense is that soft shooting touch he has, out to about 5-6 feet from the hoop. A very nice hook shot. I haven't seen him take shots beyond that range, unless I missed them, so at least he has that skill. I think I have seen him shoot a left hand hook once also. He is very good with tip-ins. It is shots inside 3 ft, and going up strong with shot shot and putbacks that he is not yet strong enough or aggressive enough to do yet. Most freshmen, other than the elite ones, are still freshmen, play soft, and need time do develop. Fox also needs to find ways to get him open for those hook shots.

Why would you say that Kuany is not a good shooter? Based on...????

He hasn't played much but when he has it seems he can knock down a corner 3 with confidence.

Kuany, I feel, will become (not this year) a major piece for Cal in the near future.

I join you in what is probably a minority opinion. Yes, I have seen him make that shot a couple of times so it was more than "even a broken watch tells the right time twice a day" type of thing. He is also not afraid to put the ball on the court. My guess is that he hits that corner shot in practice and that Fox green lit that. If he is coached up and can get sufficient "learning minutes" next season, he could make a dent or two his last two years. IMHO he ain't no stiff (I feel the same about Lars).

as someone pointed out, he is 2-7 for the year, but i didn't know that when I posted

my opinion is based on two things:

1. his pre-game shooting - I usually go to watch pre-per-game warm ups and watch the players shoot. Before the OSU game he was shooting from the wing and missing most of his shots, some badly. But he made his one attempt in the game, which is why I posted that he saw my comment. I also posted that he shot better during the halftime warmups. In past games, I didn't focus on him as much, but remember thinking he wasn't a good shooter

2. his shooting form (although admittedly not ever good shooter has a classic form)

Some players actually shoot better in a game with a defender guarding them than wide open practice shots that can be repeated (and therefore adjusted). Probably just more focused. This might also explain why he shot much better during halftime than pre-game.

Of course it could just be random. Often times people are inconsistent or need to find their range, so I read too much into his pre-game warmups.

In contrast Kelly shoots pretty well from 3, which is why I think our offense should use him a little more in that capacity, especially from mid-range. He probably shoots one 3 about every 3 or so

Thank you. A number of players are what we used to call "gamers". They just play better under pressure, the pressure of a real game. And there are many players who play their best in practice, when a real game is not on the line. True in most sports. I've seen players who couldn't make a shot in warm-ups and then make almost every shot they take in the game. And I've seen many players make everything in warm-ups, and then shoot bricks all game long. And we've all seen players make every shot they take in the first half, and can't make anything in the 2nd half at the opposite basket. And vice-versa. Go figure.

It used to be called "leaving your jock in the locker room" when you were good in practice but sucked in a game.

I think when south goes south getting Kuani in the game might be a good idea. Guy next to me said, Well he is better than Bak Bak.

I like Kuany Kuany. I would like to see him play more. Nice corner shot (at least that I've seen). He is athletic with long arms defensively. 5-7 minutes/half seems about right now. Next year I hope he is our starting 3. I also hope Brown works on his shot, ball handling and passing. Too many turnovers right now.

Brown is not be asked to do what Austin does He may be next year. He has a decent shot which I think will get better.
