Wait, why was this thread named after Wally Cleaver?

It was Jerry Mathers that went to Cal, not Tony Dow, btw, but what does that have to do with today's game against Oregon St.?

With Thorpe as the back up. Painful to watch Lars in the end of games. But great win today.

I thought the days of Pac-12 refs favoring Seniors were over. But after this game, not so much. Hard to get calls against a team with Tinkle and Kylor Kelley - Bradley is the only Cal player who gets similar benefits from the refs.

Lots of phantom calls against Cal near the basket. And about 90% of the screens set by Kylor Kelley were moving/illegal yet only 1 call.

A couple of interesting stats:

Bears shot 50% from the field and Beavers 36%.
Bears shot 17 FT and Beavers 30.

Rebounds, Assists and Turnovers almost dead level and both teams sucked from the arc.

I was at other end of court so don't know what happened on last play

I saw a block, rebound, pass, drive by tinkle, body's colliding, ball in the basket and whistle blow

I thought it was a disaster

Wha happened????
Bradley stepped in in plenty of time and took a direct charge. Brilliant defensive move.
Question: Was it really a good call?? I too was at the other end of the court and had no idea a charge would be called. Difference between winning and losing. Anyone have a better view and can tell me if the call was right? I was sure happy it went the way it did but also surprised.

Absolutely the right call. Bradley was in place, squared up with his hands down. Tinkle barreled into him. Monty (who rarely praises officials) was quite definitive in his comment.

btw, as usual Monty had several great zingers. mid-way in the 1st half, he was complementing Cal's defense and said, "Someone needs to tell Richard Jefferson about this; I'm not sure he's ever heard of defense." Later, after the double tech, the head official came over to explain it to them. Monty nodded, thanked the guy and then said, "Unbelievably, I agree with your call."

What does Oregon do to counter today's loss to Furd? Perhaps lower it's academic standards?

I watched it on TV. The call was correct. Announcers were also in agreement. Fox has done wonders on defense.

Haven't gotten to that point in the DVR yet, but generally speaking college refs call wayyyy too many charges, rewarding way too many players that run under offensive players that have already made their offensive move.

Will see after I get to that point.

IMO, it's a very close play on the charge. NBA refs would have called it a charge, college refs will call it a charge.

I like Monty as a commentator, but I don't really get this. Is he referring to the former Arizona Wildcat who retired from the NBA two years ago? Seems like a strange comment to make about someone who isn't playing anymore. (Nor coaching.)

Jefferson was the co-host on the pac 12 pre-game show and picked Oregon State to win. I'm guessing Monty was making a playful dig...

First Paris now kelly. I never thought either would ever be able to play defense. Fox really is a good defensive coach. Kelly has always shown offensive skills, but if he can consistently play with that type of defensive intensity, sky is the limit for him.

My favorite moment of the game was early in the 2H. Lars tried to block a shot but reached in and fouled the driver. Immediately Bradley and Paris came over to Lars with their hands straight up as a reminder. And then grant spoke a few words to Lars and patted him on the chest.

It was a small moment but it told me a lot.

- you can tell fox is really drilling them with proper defensive technique (the team is actually really really good at challenging shots with their hands straight up)

- most importantly, you can tell there is serious buy in from the players when they are parroting what the coach is teaching them with such enthusiasm.

There were a lot of phantom calls against Cal - Pac-12 refs apparently still reward (OSU's) seniors. I know the bad calls tend to balance out, but in this case the refs were rewarding OSU for driving and initiating contact and Cal players (Paris, South, and even Bradley) weren't getting the same calls. The free throw disparity was significant, particularly when you take into account that OSU was fouling intentionally at the end.

Kylor Kelley should have been called for about 10 moving screens. Not sure why they called one and then let the rest go.

Final great defensive stop by Brown. Just got in the way on the inbound pass and that killed the clock.
Small risk - big reward.

Big risk IMO. Had the Pac12 caliber ref called a foul the game likely would have been tied.

However with everyone but Bradley off the line during his free-throws I was worried there wouldn't be anyone to stop the inbounds pass. Kudos to Brown for coming up and forcing the clock to start.

What I really liked was that it appeared Brown was smart enough to know the clock/game situation. Once the OSU guy fell down Joel refrained from reaching in and picking up a stupid foul that could have resulted in 2 free throws. Kept the refs from getting involved.

We don't know if Monty and Jefferson have any history which might prompt a comment like this. I did notice that either on the pre-game show or halftime show, Jefferson made a comment that as a player he had never cared about getting steals. My memory of him as a player was just his offense, and I can't remember if he gave full effort on defense or not.

Why would you say that Kuany is not a good shooter? Based on...????

He hasn't played much but when he has it seems he can knock down a corner 3 with confidence.

Kuany, I feel, will become (not this year) a major piece for Cal in the near future.

I join you in what is probably a minority opinion. Yes, I have seen him make that shot a couple of times so it was more than "even a broken watch tells the right time twice a day" type of thing. He is also not afraid to put the ball on the court. My guess is that he hits that corner shot in practice and that Fox green lit that. If he is coached up and can get sufficient "learning minutes" next season, he could make a dent or two his last two years. IMHO he ain't no stiff (I feel the same about Lars).

Yeah Lars has potential if he can learn to develop better hands. He's actually a really good finisher once he actually catches the ball.

He reminds me a lot of Ryan Jamison. Drove me nuts how many pretty passes Kidd used to dish to that guy only to have him fumble it away. At one point, Kidd just told him to keep his hands up at all times, that seemed to help a little bit.

Not so sure I'd call Lars a finisher at this point.

According to hoop-math, he's only got a 51.6% FG% for shots at the rim (which I believe is defined as <3 ft) which is one of the lowest such percentages on the team despite him being the biggest guy. Kelly, by contrast, is at 66%.
