At the past couple men's basketball games, I didn't notice any of the student Mic Men (or women) leading cheers. There were a few times that the Haas emcee Nasser led cheers, but he's got other responsibilities keeping him busy during the game. It was particularly noticeable at the Oregon game, since there was a reasonably large group of Oregon fans doing some "Let's Go Ducks!" cheers, and normally the Cal Mic Men would get a counter-cheer going to try to drown out the opposing fans, but the student section did nothing.
Today at the OSU game, I saw at least one person who appeared to be in a Mic Man 'uniform,' but he didn't have a mic and didn't see him leading any cheers. Did they lose privileges or something?

Saw the same mic man, no intention of exhorting the crowd. Sad, as there were lots of youngsters ready to yell. Perhaps the hyperactive glockenspiel player could do double-duty.

Don't see the need for both Nasser and Mic Men. At this point in time, don't see the need for either honestly until the crowd returns. There seems to be more than enough cheerleaders on hand to . . . ya know . . . lead cheers.

The best cheers are the ones that happen because of the energy of the game and exuberance of the crowd. The mic men evolved out of a few spontaneous fans who would jump to the fore and exhort the eager fanbase. Perhaps that 'less is more' paradigm is a better fit these days.
