Gotta love Joel Brown's game and effort. He is really a defensive gem. Has great quickness and also shows the ability to play aggressively without fouling. Look for him to become a member of Pac12 all defensive team next year. Just need him to work on that outside shot. As mentioned elsewhere on this forum he's got that Jorge mentality.

And...... did anyone notice the one guy able to handle Gach yesterday? It was Kuany. Another potentially excellent defensive player. Has really quick lateral foot movement and those long arms that allows him to play an extra half length off of an offensive player. Got a feeling we're gonna see a lot more of Kuany next year.

The late season improvement in Brown's game has been encouraging. I'm also pleased with the way Kuany and Thorpe have gotten more PT and are showing signs they can contribute down the line. Overall, the main accomplishment for Fox this year has been the improvement all across the roster. Conference coach of the year will undoubtedly go to a contender, Altman or Cronin, but considering his material, Fox has done as good a job as anyone IMO.

Pretty much agree, but I thought Brown did the best job on Gach and couldn't figure out why he wasn't in the game late in the second half on defensive possessions. Turns out he was in the locker room getting stitched up! A true warrior, but will need to work on his freethrows if he his going to lead the team in crunch-time.

Good post, Redless and I agree. One minor quibble: Brown's foul rate is still too high and is the highest on the team among guards/wings at 3.8 fouls/40. I think that's an area where he can and will improve next season. Jorge fouled too much as a freshman as well but drastically cut that down over time. But Brown's clearly gonna be an all-defensive team guy. If he develops into more of an offensive threat, look out.

I have nothing really tangible to substantiate this, but I suspect that Joel is the type of guy that's a good listener and very easy to coach. I think next year he will realize that with Paris gone there will be much more responsibility placed on him, so its necessary that he tweaks his game, i.e. the foul rate that you mentioned. Hope his game progresses like Jorge's did. Comparing the two, Jorge's shooting was not as bad as a freshman, but OTOH Joel really possesses blinding speed with the ball.

Fox has done an amazing job in player development with these kids. Still need to recruit at a high level but if he does......

So weird to hear compliments focused on the coach.

I get that sense too about Brown. And even though I'd love to see an outside shot develop, Brown will be hugely valuable for the team if he can just play good defense and limit turnovers despite the ball being in his hands a lot. I only mention the fouls part because limiting fouls and turnovers is a huge part of how Fox wasn't to play. And the analytics support that rather clearly. Fox has talked about how much he admires how UVa plays and it's the same thing. Year in, year out, UVA is among the top 10 teams that foul the least. And truth be told, Brown may he high but it's not problematically high.

Jorge by contrast was 4.9 and 4.2 fouls/40 as a freshman and sophomore before getting it down to 3.2 and 3.0 as a junior or senior. So, he learned to channel his aggression more effectively and I have no doubt Brown will do the same.

This is a really likable and fun team. Play hard, seem to have taken in Fox' schemes, etc

Yesterday they seemed to get into that intangible bb flow that is lovely to watch. Fun game to be at.

Talent is another issue, but this has become one of my favorite teams and what a contrast to last year.

Prentice mcgruder couldn't shoot either.

But he could play defense, pass and run the offense.

Granted, he was surrounded by a lot more firepower, but he did help lead us to a sweet 16

Im not quite sure how Brown managed to get cut badly deflecting a ball, I thought he might have dislocated or at least badly sprained a finger, but when play stopped next he was showing off his blood to get removed immediately from the game. After Brown came back to the bench, it looked like he twice left to get some adjustment to the bandaged hand, one time late in regulation Fox was looking to get him on for D and frustrated that Brown wasn't at the ready, he was apparently back towards the tunnel presumably getting an adjustment.

After Plummer hit the 3 to cut the lead to 68-67 with 10 seconds left, it looked like Fox didn't want anyone but Brown on Plummer. Brown was in obvious pain/discomfort, but was still hitting the deck and still trying to get his hands into the passing lane, a huge part of 3 OT TO's. The first time he went to the line in OT, I'm thinking, "How can a lefty who basically shoots his FT's one handed, is a very poor FT shooter to begin with, and is in obvious pain from the injury to his left hand hit any FT's?" He missed the first badly. He made the second. When he got his hands on the pass for the steal and had the breakaway to basically seal the game, I didn't know if he could make that left handed layup while injured. But he did. And made his final 2 FT's, too.

And once Brown was in to defend him starting with the final Ute possession of regulation, Plummer didn't score again until Brown was back out replaced by the senior walkons for the final Ute possession in OT.

Brown had only 15 minutes of PT, but he was definitely the hero of OT, and doing it while in pain and discomfort but getting his hand in the middle of things in spite of the risk of causing more pain. I think it was my favorite performance of the year.

I sit down low near the FT line, and I could see JB wincing after each FT. Also, I spoke to Fox at the gala after the game, and he acknowledged that Brown was one of the quickest players he's coached. His offense is getting more and more under control. He split defenders nicely a couple of times foray-ups or dishes.

Joel Brown earned the Jorge Gutierrez Defensive badge of honor for this game!

Let's find out how good he really is and put him on Pritchard. And then Thompson. To beat OR and OSU you have to contain both guys.

Tinkle is more of a threat at OSU, but he's too tall for Brown.

We are fortunate to have signed Brown, and we are also fortunate that Mark Fox has coached up Paris Austin to be a decent defender now. We will be needing both of them to step up their defense to stop or slow down Pritchard, and to a bit lesser extent, Thompson. And we need to not fall asleep. Pritchard is a very special player, who can really turn it on in the last 10 minutes of a game.
