Well, the folks at Missouri must be really sorry these days for having wasted $25+ million (I think all guaranteed money) to hire away Coach Martin from Cal.

This year (year 3) Coach Martin is 6-10 (11th place) in the SEC and has an overall losing record of 14-15.

Last year (year 2) Coach Martin went 5-13 (12the place) in SEC and had and overall record of 15-17.

The first year at Missouri, Coach Martin went 10-8 (6th Place) in SEC and had an overall record of 20-13. That year Coach Martin got some star recruits like the Porter kids (away from UW) by hiring their daddy as the assistant coach (when UW fired Lorenzo Romar and his assistants).

Well, over three years, Coach Marin is 21-31 (.403) in SEC with an average of 10th place in SEC and 49-45 (.521) overall. For their $25+ million, Missouri has gotten into the NCAA tournament once (with the Porter kid) and lost in the first round, followed by two losing season.

This is not exactly the results Missouri was hoping for when they paid Coach Martin $25+ million dollars. He was in such a rush to be hired by Missouri that he "lost" that last first round NIT game to Bakersfield (that was a disgrace).

Does anyone know what are the fans at the Missouri board saying about their basketball program these days?

P.S. the disaster that Mike Williams started after Coach Martin left for Missouri is another topic for another thread... even better, no topic and no thread for that one.

Well, say what you want, but, in my view Coach Martin is a Div. 1 level MBB coach, although an average coach at D-1 level.

How long is his contract for?

I think seven years, but, I believe it was all (or almost all) guaranteed money. As much as I hated Coach Martin leaving Cal specially the timing of it, I cannot blame the guy for taking $25 million guaranteed. With that kind of money you and your kids (maybe even grand kids) are set for life.

How is a losing record 2 of 3 years average?

He teaches defense well and can get the elite recruit periodically. Other than that, he is good at leveraging opportunities for himself.

My friend, please read my post carefully. I said he is an average D-1 Coach (there are around 200 D-1 college basketball teams). That would make him a below average Power 5/6 coach. Hence, having two out of three losing seasons in a Power 5/6 conference.

OK, although I think that he may not be average for mid-majors either.

IMHO, for defense, Coach Martin is in the upper half of the Power 5/6 coaches. For offense, he is in the lower half of the mid-major coaches

OTW, for taking advantage of opportunities for himself, he is in the elite category. And, for jumping from job to job, he is in a league of his own.

Go a bears!

P.S. Hey Coach Martin, now it has been three years in Missouri and it is time to move on (three at Missouri State, three at Tennessee, three at Cal and now ...).

Three's the charm, I guess. I does look like maybe there is a pattern here.

He was a fraud from the get go! I don't blame him for his self promotion, but I do blame those in the Administration that fell for the fact that " he give a great interview"? Cal has not distinguished itself in hiring quality program changing coaches! (Wilcox excepted)

Fox: So far, so good, but a ways to go to get the final verdict from the jury. His first season has at least 3 games to go, and we have yet to see his first real recruiting class, where he has had a full year to recruit.
