Unfortunately I don't think you'll be able to see it from Cheapskate Hill.

FUNNY!!! THANKS STU............LET HOPE There are ENOUGH Players TOMORROW NIGHT to field a team in the fall............When is the last date schools can accept a transfer player?
I keep up with Raoul..........The Transfer Portal is something.....I wonder if things will settle down once students use their Covid year. Players can transfer, and have 2-3 years to play at their new school......I
guess a degree from Cal is not reason enough to stay and graduate for some. It is very difficult to be admitted to Cal as a freshman.

Not being a member of the media generation I didn't think of this right away: I wonder if the event will be streamed or at least recorded.

Just got back from the banquet. There were 12 tables with 8 seats each, so about 100 people including the team. All the players were there except, not surprisingly, Dalayah and Fatou. Sela was also absent but is home due to a family emergency.

Evelien has one foot in a boot and was getting around with one knee on a scooter, although she hopped up a few steps on one leg to speak. She told me she had ankle surgery and will be fine by summer. Jayda had one elbow in a cast. I don't have any details on that but the trainer told me everyone will be fine by fall.

For once our program doesn't lie about heights. I'm 6'1" and could see Jadyn and Mia were not much shorter, Evelien a bit taller, and Michelle a bit taller still (all wearing flat shoes). Most of the guards were in heels.

Charmin spoke very well, including about the NCAA making some needed changes but for the wrong reasons (like the alternative was going out of business). On the topic of changes she also mentioned an assistant (I forgot her name and title) who is working on analytics.

Our three international players all speak perfect English, better than I hear from many native-born Americans. Including myself.

It was a great evening. You captured all the highlights.

Cailyn was also there.

I forgot to mention Charmin told me the team will be taking their once-in-four-years international trip to Spain in August. They had planned to also visit Croatia but that's up in the air because it's closer to the war zone. And yes, we're recruiting in Spain.

Thank you both for your reports. What was the overall atmosphere of the banquet?. Was there a positive feeling of togetherness and optimism about the future?

What did Charmin say her strategy would be to fill the three vacated scholarships of Daniels, Samb & Crocker. Did she suggest that she might be successful bringing in a transfer to help fill the void for next season?

Just out of curiousity, what did Cailyn Crocker have to share. Btw, was Karisma Ortiz in attendance?
Good night. GO BEARS!

The atmosphere seemed positive to me, but that's only a personal perception.

Charmin said nothing about recruiting. I talked with her for a short time but asked about recruiting only in the context of the upcoming overseas trip.

Each class went to the podium as a group and each player answered a short question about one of their classmates. Cailyn got a lot of kudos for graduating in three years. Karisma was with her group of grads (Jadyn and Sierra) and seemed healthy.

I agree with Stu about the positive atmosphere. Lots of laughing and joking around among the players and coaches. Even some dance moves.

I had a nice conversation with Coach Kelly Cole.

I approached the subject of the transfer portal and if the Bear coaches were surprised by the three players who have entered it. She didn't talk at all about our situation in particular but instead about the portal in general and the vast number of players in it and far fewer "landing spots".

She understood why these young women wanted to explore what's out there because Covid had limited campus visits, etc. during their recruiting process. It was a very insightful conversation.

Sidebar: There were also student athletes and coaches from other sports in attendance to support Cal WBB.
At my table, Coach Coralie Simmons and Asst Coach Heather Petri of Cal Women's Water Polo. Keep an eye on this sport. Expect great things from these student athletes in the coming years. These coaches offered insight into their sport and are very focused. They had to deal with Covid much like Charmin did with cancelled games, etc.

Charmin did mention that coaches from other Cal women's sports often interact and brainstorm.

I sat next to Ornela and a track athlete who specializes in triple jump. Apparently they all meet and hang out together at the beginning of the year.

Charmin mentioned many other coaches but not the men's basketball coach.

Paul Reed is in charge of coaching up the post players, correct? Did he talk about Cal's inside play? Two of the three departures are coming from his group. Also, any tidbits from our defensive specialist coach, Eliza Pierre.
Is Kai Felton going to continue to be a consultant to Charmin? I don't believe that five-member coaching staffs are allowed in the Pac 12, are they? GO BEARS!

You've read the reports that Stu and I have provided. Do you think we are holding back information? We aren't!! This event was all about the players in attendance and they shared their thoughts about their teammates in the same year of eligibility (Freshmen - Jayda, Mia) Sophomores (Alma, Michelle, Ornela), Juniors and Grad students.

There was NO, I repeat NO discussions about inside play, defense, offense, shooting, turnovers, etc, etc, etc.

And yes, Kai Felton is considered a Special Assistant to Charmin Smith and not counted towards the assistant coaches (Reed, Cole and Pierre).

They also showed a video with highlights from this past season.

SFCB72-you mean that you can tell that I haven't been to one of these events. Sorry-I guess that I had more serious subject matter that I thought needed discussion. GO BEARS!

I'm old enough I probably forgot half of what happened at the banquet by the time I got home. But I can tell you it was entertainment, not business. Nothing you might hear at a chalk talk.
