The women are struggling to find any kind of offensive rhythm and trail 16-9 heading into the 2nd quarter.

SMC defends well and crashes the board so the Bears will need to be on their game to win this.

Right after I posred, Asia buried a 3 and got a bucket off a steal to start the quarter.

Reason nice 2nd quarter rally, with Cal leading 35-27 at the break.

Asha's been money from the perimeter and Jaelyn's provided a really nice boost, twice scoring inside while getting hammered on the shot.

They really turned up the defense, too, fueling the run with a bunch of steals and first shot defensive rebounds.

Good sign that no one panicked when down 9 early. Asha has continued the composure she showed so much of last year. And Brown played loose and under control as well -- she will be fun to watch. The teams's long arms and quickness really shrink the passing lanes. But they need to maintain energy in the 3rd quarter. Would like to see the ball get into Kristine in different ways -- quick exterior passes and then Kristine moving to a good post position.

Bears led 35-27 at halftime. Gaels closed to 1 midway through the 3rd, but stabilized and lead 54-46 after 3. Kristine has gotten involved in the offense more.

Down to 56-53. In penalty for FTs already, Cal is, but can we hit them? Missed 3 or 4. Now 59-53, 6:40 remaining

Need to build this lead, not let it go down to the end. 62-54 now

Bears up 67-55 with 3 minutes left. IOW, not safe!

Now 69-55. Looks like the Gaels have gotten worn down.

Final score, Bears win 74-67. This showed something, with a road win after trailing early, and holding off a couple runs. St. Mary's has some talent, but Cal needs to improve on some things to be able to play with the better teams coming up.

Asha went 5-8 from 3, leading scoring with 18 and the 3 rookies chipped in with 17.

Kristine had an off night scoring and on the boards so it was nice to have some depth to pick up the slack.

Is something going on with K.C.? Also, does anyone know why Mo isn't playing more?

Good bus trip over and back, shepherded by Eliza and Ryan

Neither of them bring as much to the floor as the rotation players, IMO.

Incidentally, great Cal crowd tonight!

Gee we made the picture. We drove over and it was fast. Less than a half hour. Ate over there in some place called Pinninnis or some thing like that. Food was Ok as I was looking for a salad.

As I have said since the first day of practice, defense will carry this team. And as I said, Brown is very athletic.

I'm still trying to figure out the various defenses. One problem in the beginning is that the pressure is out front by the big players. So if you get inside then poor little Thomas is the defender.

By the way, was told the girl in the first row beside the male with the afro is Mc Kenzie Forbes. In the beginning, I thought this isn't impressing anyone. But later we redeemed ourselves.

I have always like this gym. When I first came to the Bay Area,
i went to quite a few men's games there. Not a bad seat i8n the house.
Like the campus, and they had quite a party out front as we entered. I hope we continue a home and home with them.

I have always enjoyed watching games at St. Mary's but last night's logistics were a nightmare. They scheduled the Men's game at 8 pm.
So when the women's game ended they would not let people in the upper sections out until they could clear the lower sections. But they were letting people in for the men's game at the same time - so you had a heard of people trying to get in, another a herd of people waiting in line to exit - the people patiently waiting upstairs could only wonder what was going on as they say a crowd of people coming upstairs - many finally ignored the student ushers and bulled their way downstairs only to find a lobby area completely grid locked. Fortunately the majority of fans were in good spirits and were taking it in stride.
Oh yeah, there was a game played - #25 on St. Mary's box score may not indicated it but she played great, completely dominated Kristine. I thought CJ gave really good minutes - they could not push her around the inside like they were doing to Kristine. J. Brown did foul out but played with a lot of energy, nice minutes again. Asha, Cowlings and P - just rock solid. Team still needs some work as the 5 pt first quarter indicated.

St. Mary's is a tough team to play. They are well-coached and have a number of bulkier frontline players who will push people out of the way as often as the refs will let them. And in this one, that was frequently. A revelation in this game was CJ West. She defended, rebounded, and had some effective moves underneath. Didn't look at all like a rookie. And Kristine did pass back out of the double team a number of times. But it went for naught as our outside shooters, except for Thomas, were coming up empty. Our defense did save us. But we will need some better shooting, boxing out, and rebounding improvement to finish higher in the league.

We scored 9 points in the first quarter.

St. Mary's held Anigwe to just six shots, even though they were playing a man. They just sagged off everyone, and the only one who could hurt them was Asha Thomas. She was 5-8 from three, and the rest of the team was 2-17. As long as at least one player is hitting threes, Cal will be okay, but you'd certainly like more consistency.

St. Mary's, on the other hand, is a veteran team with more than a few redshirt seniors, and a lot of Australian/New Zealand talent – they play smart, physical basketball and were a very good test. Paul Thomas is a good coach, and they're always of threat in the WCC.

So all in all, a nice win for the Bears, but I don't know if they changed anyone's expectations about the coming season. Somebody has to make outside shots, or Anigwe will be surrounded by three players every time she touches the ball all season long.

I was on a flight to Spokane with the SMC women's team this morning and talked a bunch with their Aussie post from Perth.

She said once Cal turned it up after the first quarter, the were really tough to handle.

Sat next to Cal QB legend Mike Pawlawski on the flight, too. Funny enough, it's the third time it's worked out that way this season.

Love to hear his thoughts on the team, coaching etc. have to be off the record (perhaps a chat Discussion topic) certainly. Any thoughts about that possibility MB?
