I don't know if this was mentioned but Page Bowie spoke at center court on Friday. She is a fire fighter. She also was a starter on the basketball team and a starter on the softball team. The last women athlete I remember who started two sports. I do remember two others who dabbled in two sports but didn't start two sports. Maybe Wayne Bear can come up with their names. One was a reserve post plsyer who also was a softball pitcher. Wasn't a force with either team. The other was a volleyball player from Colorado who was a volleyball player but played one year on the basketball team after her elgibility was up.

Any how, Page looked really fit as she talked to the youngsters about fire safety. She mentioned she played two years in Europe after graduating. She was a small forward for the bears.

First, there are some things we are doing better this year than in past years. One of those if free throw shooting. /we are shooting 73.8% this year. This is the first time we have been north of 70% for a long time. We have three who are shooting 85 % or better. Really, if Anigwe was hooting better then we might lead the league in FT shooting.

Second , our rebound differential this year is outstanding. We are plus 9. Last year we had improved to plus 6. A large part because of Anigwe but the rest of the team is holding their own .

I believe that her first name is spelled Paige. She was an excellent all-around athlete and possessed good height
(5-10). I'm sure that she is a competent fire fighter.

There was a former CCS field hockey player-I forget her name-who started for Cal and was a walk-on one season for the bball team. GO BEARS!

You're right about the spelling...and being a competent fire fighter.
Paige Bowie is a battalion chief with Alameda County Fire.

Paige was one of my all-time favorites and as noted was a star at both sports. I remember she was on her way to the all-freshman team in basketball when she broke her hand in the middle of the season. Her shooting motion never looked quite the same after that but she remained a great all-around player.

Here are a few more two-sport athletes who played women's basketball at Cal going back to the 1990's (hope I didn't leave anyone out):

LAURA BAKER: A star in two sports in the early 1990's, both in basketball and track and field. Even after all these years, she's still listed among the T&F all-time performers in both the heptathlon and 800 meters.

KENYA CORLEY: Not quite a star in the late 1990's but a starter in basketball and event leader in track and field in the long jump. She also ran a leg on the 4x100 relay team.

BERMIE DYER: A one-year basketball walk-on in the late 1990's from the track and field team where she was a triple-jumper.

CANDACE MCNAMEE: All-time volleyball great was added to the basketball roster at the end of her senior year but I do not recall ever seeing her on the court (not even in pregame warmups).

GENEVIEVE SWEDOR: A reserve center, I never realized she was also on the track and field team until just now when I was looking up Bermie Dyer (like Dyer she was also a triple-jumper).

MICHELLE WALD: A three-year basketball walk-on from the field hockey team.

JEN DEERING: As already noted above, she was a little used basketball walk-on but I thought she had some real potential to be a solid rebounder. Caren Horstmeyer apparently didn't agree.

BROOK COULTER: This is the volleyball player that wvitbear recalled. In the one season that she walked on, she saw limited time as a 3-point specialist but when our team went into a tailspin, Horstmeyer out of desperation made her a starter and suddenly we started winning. I guess Caren was superstitious so she kept starting Brook even though she still only played reserve-type minutes.

NATALIE NURNBERG: In one injury-riddled season, Joanne Boyle brought in but hardly used this one-year walk-on from the field hockey team.

Good job Waynebear. I'm more aware of volleyball and softball along with basketball.
