How many scholarships will the team have for 2021? Does anyone know if Charmin and her staff are actively recruiting guards? Hoping we can land a couple 5 star guards to go along with the posts.

For 2020 we'll have 4 seniors graduating and 4 freshies coming in so we'll be using just 10 4-year scholarships. That could change if we add another 2020 freshie. For 2021 we'll lose 2 seniors (Alaysia and Mi'Cole) leaving 8 scholarships used and 7 available.

With Leilani looking good already, Cailyn and Jazlen looking promising, and Ornela coming in we should have a good complement of young guards in 2021. I wouldn't mind recruiting a BIG center and a couple of wings for 2021.

Cal will lose four seniors after this season and are bringing in the #6 rated recruit class for 2020 of four to replace them. Charmin Smith gave the two walk-ons scholarships this season but they are granted on an annual basis.
Without the former walk-ons being counted, the Bears would only return six scholarship players. It would be the four freshmen and the two juniors on the roster above. One of the juniors, Mi'cole Cayton, is questionable as to her availability to play due to her knee. If she can not play full-speed (100%), that would only leave five healthy returnees.

If one adds the four newbies from the class of 2020, Charmin Smith would have a legit 9-10 scholarship players
(depending upon the health of Cayton). Cal also has a guard transfer, Naje Murray, from San Diego State that should be available as a RS junior to add to the roster next season. This would make the functional roster 10 or 11 members for 2020. Women's college basketball has fifteen scholarship slots available although Cal has never carried that many under HC Joanne Boyle or HC Lindsay Gottlieb.

The 2020 roster would possess a make-up of four freshmen, four sophomores, one junior and two seniors. The two seniors, Alaysia Styles & Mi'cole Cayton, would graduate, leaving nine returnees for 2021. It would appear that 3 new recruits would be the minimum needed to reach a dozen on the team. I would hope Charmin Smith sticks with four per recruit class ( like Stanford ) so that would allow thirteen scholarship players on the roster.

Thanks S71, I had forgotten about Naje. So we should have 5 returning guards in 2021.

Why doesn't Cal fill the 15 scholarship level?

Who wants unhappy players sitting at the end of the bench?

Daniels looks to be a nightmare matchup as a 3.

If Onyiah is a PF and Samb is a true post it definitely would make sense to bring in another top post. Probably need another Wing in the 2021 class, too.

Naje was the SDS leading 3-point scorer, as well as team leader in steals, She'll be a very useful perimeter scorer, who will help create space for Cal's new trio of bigs, A point guard who can provide tough on-ball defense on the perimeter will also provide a valuable contribution to the Bears. She's alum of St. Marys Stockton. Was she a teammate of Acosta?

I wondered when Charmin & Co. would line-up a 6'5" or taller post to compliment the three bigs the Bears have landed in 2020. Looks like that task may be completed.

Adding Akunwafo would give us a frontline firepower en par with what we had on our Final 4 era team, if not even better!

Jzaniya Harriel 5'10" guard from Antelope HS, the top prospect in NorCal for 2021 is likely a top priority for Cal. Not sure if 2021 is a "guard rich" year on the West Coast, but even with our promising trio of freshman guards and Muca, I still think the focus for recruiting might be on backcourt players to complement our trio of bigs from 2020. I'm curious where April and co. will be looking for guards/wings...maybe Texas?

Saw Jzaniya last year at the Jamboree. and wrote quite a bit about her.

I like Janae Mahan of Bear Creek who is a sophomore. although would like to see more of her.
