The leading hitter in the Pac-12 spent the first month of the season just sitting on the Cal bench. Nathan Manning, whose .429 average tops the conference heading into the Bears non-league home game against St. Mary’s Wednesday night, did not get his first start until the March 12 contest against Loyola Marymount.
That was the Bears’ 13th game of the year. He would sit again until he started against Cal Baptist on March 20.
