Cal's water polo team routed ucla 16-9 this morning to secure its top ranked status. The Bears secured the top seed for the MPSF Tournament and should garner a unanimous #1 ranking.

Absolutely amazing performance this morning! Three freshmen scored 9 goals while three juniors contributed four more. A trio of seniors added one each. Cal's goal keeper is a junior, too. Obviously-the Bears are building something special here!
GO BEARS!

Watched the game via LIVESTREAM this morning while out having breakfast.
A tremendous team effort with excellent defense!

Standing room only at Spieker on a gorgeous day.
At one point, the Bruin's got within 3 at 11 - 8, but then CAL went on another run.

GO BEARS!

That was the biggest beat down of a top program that I have ever seen Cal...has anyone seen an equivalent?

The first quarter was back/forth, trading blows then the Cal passing was as fast and crisp as I ever seen from any team...comparable with the top international teams.

The Bears really seem to be operating as a true team, recognizing when to take advantage of the defense not being able to close out on a shooter or sneak the ball into Papa at 2m, mixing in some motion and covering the counter like a wet blanket.

On that defensive front, Cal must have had a half dozen field blocks and Weinberg was a beast. Other than the Princeton game and the first half of the Big Splash (I didn't see the Pepperdine stream), Weinberg has been terrific.

As a funny aside, Weinberg almost always kisses the ball after he makes a save (like several other accomplished goalies like Nic Porter of USC)...after one of the UCLA shots hit the twine in the third quarter that cut the lead to 11-8 (on a power play), he collected the ball out of the cage with no kiss and whipped it at the Cal bench demanding a different ball...the bench obliged and, as we know, he only let one ball pass the rest of the way on a penalty shot that made it 15-9.
