SBStats 2024 1 Overall (PDF) - University of Arizona Athletics (arizonawildcats.com)

I spent some time over at Arizona softball and their top players are highly ranked national recruits plus a couple of Grad Transfer pitchers.

Softball vs Washington on 3/17/2024 - Box Score - University of Arizona Athletics (arizonawildcats.com)

Arizona's top two hitters batting over .400 are frosh CF Regan Shockey (#18 by Extra Innings Softball) and soph LF Dakota Kennedy (#4 by ETS). She's from Sheldon HS in Sacramento.

The Wildcats top pitcher is soph Aissa Silva (#6 by EIS) with a 1.82 ERA. They brought in two nationally rated freshmen pitchers, #6 rated Ryan Maddox & #17 rated Brooke Mannon.

Their catcher/DH soph Olivia Dinardo was rated #7 nationally. UofA has five highly ranked sophomores including the #4,#6 & #7 national recruits.

Their #3 hitter, 3B Blaise Biringer, transferred from Ole Miss when she was a soph.

2024 Softball Roster - University of Arizona Athletics (arizonawildcats.com)

Arizona has bounced back this season because they have six quality pitchers. The Wildcats have two nationally ranked freshmen and two nationally ranked sophomores. One of each class is pitching while the other is sitting. The two Grad Transfer pitchers have taken their slots in the rotation.

I was under the delusion that after their famous male HC departed, that their softball program was in disarray.
This team is loaded with talent.

Cal is closing the gap under Chelsea Spencer but still has a ways to go. This should be a tough series. Arizona starts four senior (Biringer, Skaggs, Scupin & Perezchica) veterans and five frosh-soph players. Their record and stats are comparable to Cal's numbers.

The Kentucky transfer, Miranda Stoddard, has given up 13 gopher balls to date. If Cal can locate their home run swing they could take advantage of this senior starter. GO BEARS!

It looks like we'll get a game in today. However, we might be looking at a DH on Sunday. Go Bears!

Randi Roelling KO'd with no outs in the second inning. She faced ten batters and gave up six singles, a walk plus a WP. The freshman is charged with five earned runs on six hits in one inning. I guess that it's obvious that Arizona came to play today.

Some days you just don't have it.

I remember watching Freshman Jolene Henderson get run-ruled vs. Arizona back in 2010. A beautiful day in Berkeley...unlike the score. I think there were 2 grand slams involved. Welcome to the PAC!

Looks like it was 2 home runs, 1 being a grand slam. I'm surprised my memory got most of that right!

Herrera with the 3 run bomb.

Cuts the score 5 to 3 in the 2nd.

Wow-Bear batters bang out some hits and tie the game in the B3rd with one out. 5-5 deadlock!

Cal falls to U of A 9-5.

Time to fight back. Our staff simply has to pitch better.

Yes! I can't remember when Cal pitchers gave up 16 hits over seven innings. Maybe I remember yielding 9 runs.

Dissatisfied with the start of conference play, but that's Cal sports in general:
*CS still "teething" as a head coach.
*RR seems to have hit a plateau OR is she hurting?
*21-2 start, probably weaker competition then looked. (Per Massey)
*1-6 conference start will be estatic to finish 9-8 after the hole they dug.
*I'll look in here in couple weeks. I suspect 5-19 now.
*Did I mention how weary I am of high expectations being dashed season after season?

The issue is our #1 is a Freshman. Val only won 8 games as a Freshman...and had to be pulled multiple times after 3 or 4 innings.

Jolene had her fair share of rough outings.

None of our Juniors or Seniors are picking up our Freshman when she gets beaten up. And trust me, this happens. It's unacceptable.

Our next pitching recruit (De Nava) is #1 in the state in strikeouts... I hope Roelling can pick her up next year. I have a feeling she will.

True, frosh can struggle but truly dominant D1 pitchers tend to be pretty tough from day 1, more like Bahl or Canady than Roelling. That's not to say she won't progress, but clearly she's not ready to carry us to OKC right now.

After AZ our next 11 games are 3x Weber St. 3x Utah, St. Marys, and 3x UCLA, who's not as good as before. We've lost 7 conference games in a row. Need to win tomorrow, then 7 of 11. Getting to 30 wins is crucial, hard to make regionals with less. If we're 30-12 after UCLA, I think we're good bet (ugh) to be sent to Norman, again.

Thor was 22-8 her frosh season. She was our last $ pitcher.

I was writing my article for the women's basketball game and missed the softball game. I recorded it on dvr, thank goodness. I guess that I need to watch from the B6th inning on! GO BEARS!

This kind of comeback win could put the Bears back on a winning trajectory. Much needed confidence builder. A boost to Haylei too.

Let's take the series, Bears!!!

It would be incredible if we could get out of a first inning without giving up multiple runs. It's a regular occurrence. Time to buckle down.

5 hits given up and we aren't even out of the 1st inning…

Randi comes in and ends the inning with a K. Great job stopping the bleeding!

The Bears answer back in the 1st.

Pond homers and Herrera with a huge, clutch 2 RBI single with 2 outs.

Boom. Cal takes the lead in the 4th on a Lagi homer and Anzaldo double.

Never easy! Hang on 8-7. RR win. Archer save.

Great series victory closed out over Arizona for the 3rd consecutive year. I have not seen the game but have it on dvr. Five extra base hits produced both yesterday and today. Maybe that's the winning formula? Cal has a winning percentage = .750 (24-8). Bears travel to Utah next weekend and the ball really carries at altitude in Salt Lake City. GO BEARS!

This is a surprising great news! I love it. I think she pitched well in a recent game too as a starter.

The series win has us up to #12 in RPI. We're behind only Stanford in the Pac-12.

Both Stanford and Cal are ranked higher than any other ACC team. Clemson is 14th, Duke is 16th & Virginia Tech
is 17th. Love it. GO BEARS!
