Cal hires former MLB player and six-year Texas assistant softball coach, Steve Singleton, as their new HC. Texas was one of the top softball programs in the country. Singleton is from Northern California and played as a prep at Bishop O'Dowd.

Wonder if he'll be able to bring in any new transfers, keep any of the assistant coaches… a lot of unanswered questions still

Million percent home run hire you're so right CF!!
So I guess that's why it took so long to make the higher they had to get some money together. Likely the highest paid coaches in the ACC for softball. LOL we poached Texas top softball AC twice now. Will Chelsea go back to Texas? All's I know is the sky's the limit with this guy. We still need a couple of arms though and I'm assuming all our 2026 recruits are going to stay.

I'm hopeful, but still don't know a lot about him.

He will certainly be able to help the players with their fielding (since he was a minor league shortstop in the Twins organization,) but I'd like to know more about his:

1) recruiting philosophy (and experience);
2) teaching ability with respect to hitting; and
3) aspirations for the Bears (national championship)?

GO BEARS !!

I read it, but it doesn't mention anything about recruiting or what his specific role was in coaching hitting.

It mainly says something to the effect that "The Longhorns' offensive numbers and winning improved markedly while Singleton was a coach," without answering directly what his role was in either recruiting or hitting.

So, while I'm very hopeful, there are still a lot of questions I have about exactly what he plans to do ....

Gosh. He was just announced today as the new HC.
Why not give him a chance to "introduce" himself to Cal fans and to talk about what he envisions for the program. Next few weeks, maybe?
CalFanatic

He was promoted from Assistant to Associate Head Coach for the former national champions and 2024 national championship runner-ups.

He led hitting development for a team that ranked in the top 10 across most offensive categories and played a key role in recruiting, helping the program secure multiple top classes including multiple #1-ranked players. So, uh… not bad!

Tabbed the Assistant Coach of the Year by D1Softball, Singleton was a key component in Reese Atwood's ascend towards the top of five single-season batting records as well as leading the team in 11 different statistical categories. Atwood, who was a four-time Big 12 Player of the Week and three-time NFCA DI Player of the Week, was named the Big 12 Player of the Year, USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 3 Finalist, D1Softball National Player of the Year, Softball America National Player of the Year and a consensus (D1Softball, Softball America, NFCA) First Team All-American. Over the course of Texas' 65-game schedule, the Longhorns set 13 team single-season records that Singleton had a hand in. As a result of taking the regular season series against then-No. 1 Oklahoma, winning the Big 12 Conference regular season championship and appearing in the Women's College World Series (WCWS) Championship Series, Singleton and the rest of UT's four-member softball coaching staff were selected as the 2024 ATEC/NFCA Division I Central Regional Coaching Staff of the Year. Singleton also worked with true freshman Katie Stewart to set a new first-year Longhorn RBI record, marking the second consecutive season the record was broken.

Singleton was instrumental in the offensive productivity of the Longhorns' five-member freshmen class that ultimately were all named to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team following the conclusion of the 2023 regular season. Redshirt-freshman Ashton Maloney ended the season by leading all qualified Longhorn offensive student-athletes with a .382 batting average (58 hits in 152 official plate appearances), while true freshman Viviana Martinez set a program record for most runs batted in (RBI) by a first-year Longhorn after totaling a team-high 52 in 188 at bats. The fifth-year head coach also worked with freshman Reese Atwood, who led the program with 11 home runs throughout the 2023 season as well as becoming the first student-athlete in program history to be credited with walk-off at bats in three consecutive games.

I'll admit it, I was not thinking we would pull off what seems like a major hire. I fell prey to the gloom and doom. Regardless of what happens, at least we took a shot at a proven commodity with an excellent pedigree. Go get em Coach. Here come the Bears!

I'll also admit that when it took more than five weeks, that my expectations dropped. I don't know how Singleton will fare in Berkeley (especially this year), but I would imagine that his second season with a new stadium will be upbeat. GO BEARS!

FYI- It does look like all of our 2025 signees are staying.... so that's a huge win. Would imagine the 2026 kids want to be coached by him but I do know at least one de-committed (Emoni Lam Sam)

Pitcher Mya McGowan will be at Cal? Someone stated that she had de-committed and signed w/ Ohio State. Bears definitely need the pitching to be competitive in the 2025-26.

Zero idea where that came from. I'm only aware of one 2026 de-commit. All 2025 recruits look like they're staying at Cal.

Any idea of the potential lineup? The only if healthy thought it would be Herrera at catcher or possibly dh.
CalFanatic
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No clue! Todd and Herrera saw success before injuries.

The Freshman class is highly touted. I imagine they will all get opportunities.

German was starting for national runner-up Tech before injury. Jackson and Robinson started every game at BC. If you add it all up…I guess that's 9 right there? We shall see!

To answer is 71's question McGowan still on the roster she went nowhere. Knowing that and that orange didn't go either we have at least a reasonable one two punch at pitching. Gerhard, peacock, and Waiters fill out the bullpen nicely, at the very least I think they can be coached up and show upside. All in all this transfer portal thing turned out to be just about a wash in terms of talent loss versus talent gained. The stats of course lean in favor of the players we lost something like 60 homers lost versus eight coming in but I'm not going to get into that. I think that deering should be retained she did a great job recruiting amid the absence of Spencer.

Listened to Steve Singleton's interview... Takeaways below:

[ol]
  • The softball community seems a bit surprised Cal made such a strong hire....considered to be a "huge statement" and investment in softball. The hosts said, "They really put their money where their mouth is." Singleton was reportedly in talks for many other head coaching positions in the South.
  • He's primed for success with a brand-new stadium and a plethora of recruiting talent in Northern California. However, as the hosts pointed out, Cal lost a lot of talent, so expectations need to be set for the first year. That said, long term, the hosts called it "a phenomenal hire."
  • Coach Singleton said this was a perfect fit. The ADs worked with him to make things work for his family. He's excited to bring his wife and sons back to the Bay Area...his whole family is bought in. His sons were especially excited and even told him, "You have to take this role." His vision aligned with Cal's leadership. The timing was great for him, as he wanted to come home. He sees California as a great recruiting hotbed and believes this is a championship-caliber program. He spoke passionately about the Bay Area and California, saying they helped "create him." He's currently working on building out his staff.
  • His big focus over the next few weeks (especially with the quick turnaround before September 1): He's going to take the next month to really get to know his group and is open to additions if needed. He plans to hit the ground running with 2027 recruiting and thinks it's an easy sell. He also believes some current players will surprise people-especially since expectations are low for this first year, which he likes. The build will be challenging but fun.
  • Great conversation on the new stadium: TLDR-it's going to be a major recruiting tool. Features include a large video board, beautiful press box, brand-new amenities, and lots of open areas where he'll have input on the design and flow. There will be indoor cages and turf for rainy days. It's expected to be state of the art.
  • Staff: When asked about qualities he's looking for, he said he has a lot of people in mind and has landed on a couple but doesn't want to spoil any announcements yet. He mentioned having "a couple of calls out to some really quality people." He's excited to get his staff into the community "rocking the navy and gold."
  • Schedule: Still trying to finalize a few games, but most of it is set. He gave big credit to interim coach Jen Deering. Around 50-52 games are already scheduled. Cal will play in both the Judy Garman Classic and Mary Nutter. He joked that without a home field this year, the team will get very close-knit. The only concerning note is that there doesn't seem to be a set home field for the 2026 season yet. The team will mostly stay on the West Coast to avoid burnout, aside from one trip to the ACC.
