Hey Everyone! I just thought the old recruiting thread was getting a little cumbersome and messy, so I'm dedicating a new thread for our 2016 recruits. The following categories are just my opinion and not based on anything but intuition. Overall, I feel the talent level isn't as high as last year, and no one should be expecting another Dream Team like 2015, but at the same time, there are several talented swimmers at the top that we need to get.

Great list. Thanks, tedbear. Adams would allow Baker to stay in the 100 breast. Drabot could swim 500 free, 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 free, or 200 breast for the Bears. As an aside, one of my nieces lives in Cedarburg. Thank Oski her kids don't have the same accent. Katie makes Bootsma sound like a Valley Girl.

Losing Pelton, Bootsma, Naze, Acker, and Grima. Can probably afford Abbey, Drabot, Adams, and another high end swimmer + a combo of 2 locals and/or legacies.

For reference (and a bit of nostalgia) with regards to all of our old comments + debates on the merits of all these prospects, here's that original topic which tedbear had initiated back when targeting the [U]2015 Recruits[/U] (but which blew up to encompass 2016 & 2017 Recruits lol):

There's elite talent at the top of the class and Cal's needs don't correspond with their rivals' needs. Top five recruits will be Ledecky, Abbey, Stanzi, Small, and Mann. Top three are already off the board.

Georgia should end up with the top ranked class since they will have the most $s. They don't have a shot to win it all in 2016, but with the right class they'll be back in the hunt for 2017. They already have Burchill, which may give them an in with Adams. They already have two elite backstrokers (Smoliga and Stewart) but neither have improved. Georgia also has ties to Small. Getting both would be devastating, but probably won't happen. Cal has a better track record with both backstrokers and IMers. Big win for the Bears if they get either Adams or Small. Should be in play for Mann, but could see her at Michigan, ASU, or UVa too.

LSJU needs stroke depth in back and fly. Probably won't add distance to Ledecky. Drabot's likely their top target. An 800 free relay of Manuel, Ledecky, Neal, and Drabot could break Cal's record. Byrnes went to the same high school as Janet Hu and swam at NCAP with Hu and Ledecky. Just don't seeing adding distance over back and fly depth.

Can't see the Bears getting below a top three class and it doesn't really matter as long as Teri fills her needs and neither Georgia nor LSJU runs the table. Pretty good options in distance (Byrnes, Voss, or Mann) and back (Adams or Small). Can't see the Bears getting shut out on needs and hoping other elite talent spreads beyond Georgia and LSJU.

Sorry to ask in this thread but I didn't know the appropriate place to ask. Does anyone know how I can access the Pac12 Women's Swimming Championship broadcasts again? I had all 3 broadcasts of the P12 and the NCAA championship meets recorded on my DVR but it crashed and so I lost it all. I found the NCAA meet on ESPN3 but I can only find recaps of the P12 championships on the P12 Network. My daughter likes to watch it before her meets. Thanks!

Maybe go on SwimSwam, or CollegeSwimming.com or Swimming World and get into posts and ask personnel responsible for site content or ask other posters on the boards and you may get the reply you are asking for.

Looking back at 2012, Bears (Bootsma, Missy) and LSJU (Neal, Ledecky) eventually split high school American Olympians. Pretty good chance that Ledecky and Abbey both make the team. Pretty unlikely that any high schoolers (other than Ledecky) make the team in individual events (top 2), but a few 400 (Abbey, Stanzi) or 800 (Ledecky, Drabot) relay spots (top 6) are up for grabs.

With Hull on board and Abbey in the pipeline, Drabot becomes an even bigger priority. Not a bad problem, but Bears will have too many 50/100 sprinters (Farida, Amy, Hull, KV) and not enough 100/200 freestylers (Baker, KM). Abbey can stretch out to 200, but would be a shame to pull her out of another relay to swim on the 800 free relay.

Ironically Teri didn't have enough 50/100 sprinters on her most recent teams and had too many 100/200 freestylers (Piehl, Cheng, Acker, Pelton). Needs Drabot and maybe Erika Brown to bracket the pure sprinters and leave Abbey on relays where she can make the most impact. Same logic applies to another backstroker or sprint breaststroker to free up Baker.

Runge is a pretty decent 200 freestyler

Bit of an academic exercise really since these freestyle races would obviously be off-events for many here, but I thought it might be interesting to see who may have some potential for contributing to the team scoring at both NCAA or Pac-12 level if called upon. Please let me know if there are any omissions or inaccurate data so that they can be corrected and updated, thanks.

Was looking at the 50/100 and 100/200 splits for relays, but it does play into individual NCAA programs too. All of the Dream Team could swim all five relays for the Bears, so the question is how do you optimize their 4 relays with their individual events.

Adding Hull makes the 2017 200 relay clear (Abbey, Farida, Amy, Hull). Abbey's individual program is clear: 50/200/100. She's Cal's fastest in the 50 and 100, so think she skips the 800. Would save her from an additional 200 swim (timed relays) on a day when she'd have two medley relay swims plus 2 200 frees.

Baker's locked into breast legs on both medleys, the 800, and the 400 relays. Her individual program looks like 200 IM, 100 breast, and 200 back. Katie M will fight Farida for the fly leg on the 200 medley, but swim the fly in the 400 medley, the 800 free, and probably the 400 free. Not sure if she swims the 50 free or 200 IM on Thursday, but safe bet for both flys.

Amy has a lot more range than I thought. 200 free relay for sure. Back legs on both medleys unless Teri adds an elite backstroke (Adams or Small) or a sprint breaststroke who could free up Baker (both individually and medley legs). Amy's program is likely 50, 100 back, and either 100 free or 200 back.

Can see why Teri recruits for relays and versatility. Hull helps in the 200 free and perhaps the 400 free relays. Drabot could save Abbey for more productive relays than the 800 free. Also could swim the 200 IM or 500 free, 200 free, and the 200 breast. 400 IM is a need, but she's more valuable in the 200 and 800 free.

Teri wanted to augment her potential relay options with Abi Speers, Cat Ladd, and Jenna Campbell. Erika Brown could fit that role geared more toward middle distance.

Definitely stoked about the promise of Cuonzo's dream class, but people don't seem to realize that Teri's consistently recruited at that level beginning with the current graduating seniors. Pretty remarkable.

Seliskar's brother swims for Purdue, but IU and Notre Dame (Murphy's brother) are better in-state swim options. Think the latter two plus Georgia are potential players for Adams.

Bears occasionally lose recruits to Georgia (Raab, Mattern, McDermott), but win (Missy, Baker, Amy, Naze, Piehl) more often. Bears only real competition is LSJU. Virginia, Texas, Michigan, UCLA, 'SC, Wisconsin, and the Ivies have part of the puzzle, but none can match the Bay Area duopoly.

Midwest has some good swimmers, but they can't keep them home. If one of Michigan, IU, Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Notre Dame could monopolize Midwest talent, they'd be a national power.

Drabot will pick Cal or LSJU. Beata Nelson will stay home and swim for UW. Have no idea on Adams, but think Georgia would prefer Small. They already have two elite backstrokers, so they won't take 2 backstrokers in this class no matter how much money they have.

More immediate needs in distance, maybe back. Kentucky’s state record-holding butterflyer Grace Oglesby, one of the top recruits in the class of 2016, has made an early verbal commitment to stay in-state and join the Louisville Cardinals in the fall of 2016.

Oglesby currently holds the second-fastest 100 fly time in high school swimming history after going 51.75 at the Kentucky High School State Championships in February. That’s just .05 off of the national high school record set by Wisconsin high school junior Beata Nelson. Oglesby put up that time swimming for her home high school, North Oldham High out of Goshen, Kentucky.

On top of that, Oglesby is excellent through all three butterfly distances, and adds big-time talent in a number of other events ranging from backstroke to IM to freestyle.

The Cardinals blew up this past postseason for a 5th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, and already look like one of the elite teams in their new conference home, the ACC.

Don't see this as a huge surprise or loss. Even after losing Bootsma, Bears will still be lopsided in fly in 2017. Don't think Oglesby or Nelson were ever on Teri's radar. Worrell's America's new fly star and Louisville is the local school. Doubt that Wisconsin gets both Drabot and Nelson, but would be surprised if they don't get Nelson.

Teri had too many backstrokers for several years and she has too many flyers now. Has to backfill in distance. Horejsi is too narrow a specialist when the team needs distance and back. Depending on the 2016 class, Teri probably adds sprint, sprint breast, and maybe a flyer in 2017.

We're still only talking about adding 4-5 impact recruits in 2016, so Teri and Kristen know what they're losing: Pelton (back, middle distance, IM, sprints), Bootsma (back, fly, sprints), Acker (sprints, middle distance), Naze (IM, fly, back), and Grima (IM). They need to look at who can replace those points and relay slots while still addressing holes (distance and breast scoring). Kind of an unusual year for Wisconsin: Drabot and Nelson are both top ten recruits and Jernberg may be a top 20 recruit. Adding all three could have moved the Badgers up big time. Big Ten schools have a tough time keeping elite talent home (Bootsma, Bilquist). Still think Nelson swims for UW, but Drabot goes all Horace Greeley. Distance is still a need, but adding Jernberg became an even longer shot when Abhey deferred since Teri then had only 3 slots for elite talent.

Would be really great if that scenario was to play out as such...though the inner workings & rules surrounding the whole scholly funds allocation scheme still has me more than confused lol, let alone trying to comprehend how that would mesh with a foreign country's funding of a Cal student-athlete.

Actually I've been also wondering what Spain's selection criteria were for Worlds this year, since Marina will be part of the select Spanish National squad that's going to Kazan (yay! :cheer), yet AFAIK she hadn't competed at the Spanish Open National Championships that was held in Malaga, which I had previously assumed was their selection meet...

That's possible. Since internationals aren't eligible for financial aid, most draw near full rides as freshmen. Based on her freshmen year, Marina's scholly money was likely adjusted, but maybe not significantly since Teri had no other viable substitutes for the breast legs on relays. Farida and Noemie have to be drawing significant scholly money too, but they are also probably being partially floated by their national teams during an Olympic year. Think Teri might have some additional funds to land the right transfer or late recruit if one becomes available.

I don't think we recruited he; her sister went to Cal and swam. Also Ucla is offering full rides to to recruits we might offer less than half. If we offered we probably wanted her to take .25scholarship while others went full
