For example, Kathleen Baker has mentioned that she wants to go into nursing eventually. Cal has no pre-nursing major, so she'll likely go for public health instead. That's fine, but thank goodness she chose Cal over another school that has a BSN program.

Great decision by Kathleen. Remember 3 years ago, we were allegedly 2nd choice to super women basketball recruit Jordin Canada who picked UCLA because of their nursing program.

USA Swimming: There are currently 48 girls who will be 18 or younger next March who have swum a time that would have been invited to the 16 NCAA D1 Champs

Also, there is some sort of impedance matching between swimmers and schools. Sometimes I wonder if we automatically assume that all Californians should pick Cal, Stanford, or USC (maybe UCLA), but it seems like the new trend is to try a school far from home, and then move back "home" eventually. Also, academic fit is important. For example, Kathleen Baker has mentioned that she wants to go into nursing eventually. Cal has no pre-nursing major, so she'll likely go for public health instead. That's fine, but thank goodness she chose Cal over another school that has a BSN program.

The Cal specific recruiting filter is pretty harsh. Generally need 450 points to win an NCAA title. Doesn't matter how the points are generated, but ideally would sign 4 potential swim scorers every year and a potential diving scorer every other year. There are also academic requirements. Cal's financial aid pool isn't as deep as competiting private schools (LSJU, 'SC). The "Berkeley" brand resonates globally, but foreign nationals aren't eligible for financial aid, so Cal has to overpay for internationals. Noemie's worked out and Haughey, Penny, and Ruck would too, but anyone below that point production level doesn't pencil out.

Cal, LSJU, 'SC, UVa, Texas, and Michigan don't have a collective monopoly on high end swimmers/students, but Bears have to win their fair share of recruits head to head with those schools. The Ivies are terrific academically, but they rarely produce NCAA scorers, so there's some self selection going on there.

Nets out that CA residents (in-state tuition) and legacies have to fill in some of the systematic gaps.

I thought for sure that she was going to be a Trojan. Knew she wasn't coming here when she didn't show up for the recruiting weekend. Looks like Grace and Ashley are the only big names this year. Wonder who might show up for a second recruiting weekend. Nobody should worry too much about this year. 2018 is the super talented year to have a lot of scholarship money available. Taylor Ruck, Zoe Bartel, Lucy Nordmann, and Eva Merrell just to mention a few. Still don't know if Isabel Ivey is a 2018 or 2019 recruit. #dreamteam2018

Farida is flanked by Ashley Volpenhein (#1 OH, #18 Nat) to her right, and Grace Zhao (#2 CA, #12 Nat) on her left.
The tall brunette between Grace & KV is Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou (#6 CA, #37 Nat).
I think the recruit with the blue shades on top (next to Katie & Courtney) is Alexis Margett (#3 CA, #23 Nat), but could be wrong there?
Dannie Dilsaver ((#2 NE, #83 Nat) is on Abbey's right.
Haven't figured out who the person in front of Courtney may be...anyone able to help us here?

What threw me off is her hair is pulled back here instead of hanging down, but reckon there's enough of a resemblance if you reference these images with the one of Alexis directly below ... or am I just on my own lil wild goose chase here?! :p

To generalise/simplify the primary swim skill sets of our prospective 2017 baby :bear:s a bit here (please pardon any errors or missing stuff as haven't delved all that deeply into their respective stats yet):

--------

Grace - Breast

Zhao's 200 breast time of 2:09.23 is considerably faster than Maggie's, and not too far off Nikol's.
The other 2 currently hold an advantage over Grace in the shorter breast distance. She'll be looking to dip below the 1 minute barrier in the 100 breast (PB = 1:00.65, took 2nd behind 2018 recruit Zoe Bartel @ the Speedo Winter Junior National Championships last Dec in Austin).
Has a wicked 50 free in her which could possibly be leveraged for our 200 free relay down the road as Farida & KV will have graduated - Grace's 22.75 there isn't all that far from sprint specialist Lauren Pitzer's 22.66! That personal best time, if Grace would have swum it @ 2016 CA CIF Champs back in May, would have tied for first with winner Elise Garcia (2018 recruit) in the A final...

Ashley - Sprint freestyle

Volpenhein's 22.35 = swiftest 50 free out of the class' top sprinters (Pitzer, Ciesla).
Comparable to Marta in the 100 distance...whilst Lauren's faster there, with a bit more versatility in terms of events.
Ashley's 100 fly (54.73) would have garnered Cal some C finals points @ 2016 Pac-12s, and should also be quite serviceable @ dual meets.
200 free (1:49.39) will need some additional development.

Alexis - Sprint Butterfly

Margett is close to top sprint flyer in the class, Caitlin Tycz, in the 100 fly (52.59). Faster than both Victoria Edwards & Courtney Harnish, and much quicker than Hannah Kukurugya, Brooke Forde & Taylor Pike, in this distance.
Top 200 flyer Courtney (really great in a bunch of other events too, that's why Harnish's rated the #1 recruit in this class!) does trump Alexis by 3.37 sec in the longer distance, with Taylor, Kuks, Victoria & Brooke also enjoying a sizeable advantage. Tycz slower than Margett tho.
Fast improving in the 200 IM (1:59.78), which would have earned a B finals spot in last year's Pac-12s, and qualified for 2016 NCAAs.

Sophie - Backstroke

Krivokapic-Zhou's 53.50 PB won the 100 back title @ 2016 CA CIF Champs (where Aislinn came in 4th, with Emily Eastin behind her).
This 100 back PB...plus her 1:56.79 in the 200 back...her 1:47.90 200 free (ahead of Cat & Val who made it to the C finals of the 2016 Conference champs)...her 100 fly best of 53.67 (which is actually faster than fly specialists Kuks & Taylor, and all-rounder Brooke!)...all 4 of her events would have earned a 2016 NCAA invite (B cut), not to mention B final points @ 2016 Pac-12s!
I can see why Teri who does prize versatility quite a bit would want to recruit Sophie

Dannie - Breast/IM?

Dilsaver has a 1:02.15 in the 100 breast (NCAA B cut), and a 2:16.44 in the 200 breast. Also a 2:00.37 in the 200 IM, and 4:15.90 in the 400 IM.
All 4 times are 2016 NCAA B cuts.
Haven't looked up her times in other events, so may have missed her better events...

Well, those of us who have been to the school and have experienced & benefited from all its unique & varied offerings, naturally can't conceive of anywhere else that's remotely close to the fab-ness that's UC Berkeley (not talking about just the academics of course). Throw in one of the best swimming coaches ever at both the collegiate & highest international level, the rich & storied history of Women's Swimming here, complemented by a studly yet adorable & very closely-knit group of outstanding women who are so supportive of each other...I mean, what more can one possibly want? :p

But, discarding my blue-and-gold tinted glasses if but for a wee moment hehe, who's to say what's best for valued recruits like Alexis who chooses to go elsewhere, other than the recruit herself and those closest to her? Perhaps Margett had found an instant connection & bond with her future teammates there...received an offer that was sort of hard to resist...and/or felt Michigan was a perfect fit for her, swimming & school wise - UM's academics record obviously speaks for itself...Mike Bottom & his coaching staff are well-respected...the women's team have made impressive strides as of late, winning their 2016 B1Gs by 153.5 points over a very talented IU squad that was led by multi-gold medalist Olympian Lilly King, and placing 10th @ 2016 NCs just slightly behind the Wolfpack.

Alexis's sprint fly skills will help shore up the Wolverines' weakest stroke area, the butterfly, with Zoe Mattingly having already graduated this season. Margett's already significantly faster in the 100 (52.59) than freshies Vanessa Krause (53.49) & Emily Eastin (54.24), and her 1:57.74 isn't too far off Astrid Swensen's 1:57.20 in the 200 fly. Alexis' massive improvements in her 200 IM may also eventually be of value to UM if she continues to drop time at this pace, though this is one of their more solid dept with Siobhan Haughey's 1:54.97 and Clara Smiddy having gone 1:56.74 (Michigan's main strengths are currently in their distance free, as well as sprint free & back).

Anyway enough about the Wolverines as this is supposed to be a Golden :bear: board lol - would have dearly loved to welcome Alexis to our ranks, but wish her all the best in her chosen direction in school & life!

-------

Back to talk on the remaining recruits who has visited the campus a fortnight ago - feel that we may not hear from a number of them until after LSJU hosts their recruiting weekend, which I'm guessing will take place 8 Oct (school started later down on the Farm due to their quarter system, there will also be a football home game that weekend v. WSU).

Pretty sure that Grace & Ashley have trips scheduled there (would be the 5th one for Ashley), wouldn't be all that surprised if Sophie & Kuks show up down there too. Grace is undoubtedly our greatest need out of the group (breaststroke, with some 50 free swagger to boot) - also would hurt Bears the most if she was to defect to the furdettes.

Zhao's prob. already getting intense pressure from family & relatives to go hug a tree lol (mum works on the Farm according to BD)...but there has been a history of PASA swimmers seeing the light and looking across the bay & elsewhere for their choice of college & swim programme, so reckon we're still in the running...
(knock on wood :axe)

There's always the additional, usually lower-profile, scheduled visits following the main one for other prospects, not to mention home visits - so who knows what pleasant surprises Coach Teri & Ian may possibly have in store for us! (Courtney Harnish/Sierra Schmidt/Brooke Forde/Marta Ciesla and the likes - dare I hope or harbour such bold & adventurous dreams? )

Hannah Kukurugya (#1 IN, #21 Nat) & Marta Ciesla (#1 FL, #20 Nat) @ Sanford Stadium, Athens today:

Marta had visited the Trojans, Horns & Tenn Vols last month.

Kuks has already checked out Zona & 'SC, and is expected to materialise on the Farm next weekend.

-------

Georgia has received verbals from Sammie Burchill (#2 IN, #31 Nat), Emmaline Peterson (#2 NC, #54 Nat), Donna Blaum (#7 GA, #105 Nat), Maddie Wallis (#1 MA, #187 Nat). Also a very early one from 400 IMer Regan Barney (#3 TX, #25 Nat - SwimSwam's #20) that I had forgotten about.

UGA had previously hosted Courtney Harnish and Morgan Friesen (#2 CO, #63 Nat), the latter subsequently verbaling to Louisville. Also Olivia Anderson (#2 ON, #31 Nat) from Canada, who had also made a trip to the Wisconsin Badgers the week before.

-------

Texas Longhorns have secured commitments from Victoria Edwards (#2 TX, #7 Nat) , Evie Pfeifer (#1 MO, #28 Nat), Ella Tierney (#6 IL, #115 Nat), Peyton Quattlebaum (#11 TX, #140 Nat) & Logan Shiller (#16 TX, #153 Nat) at this point.

Carol Capitani had earlier on invited Courtney Harnish (#1 PA, #1 Nat), Ashley Volpenhein (#1 OH, #18 Nat), Brooke Forde (#1 KY, #2 Nat), Marta Ciesla (#1 FL, #20 Nat), along with Elizabeth Bailey (#6 GA, #104 Nat) & Camryn Toney (#11 TX, #129 Nat), to Austin.

Probably missed some other details or may have mucked up the exact order of events...but hopefully that will provide yet another (rough) snapshot of who's interested in who thus far...

Katie G did take a tour of Duke a fortnight ago, so maybe alumna Melanie Klaren (now a swim coach w/the Blue Devils) had secretly put in a good word for Cal there haha. Glavinovich could also give us an in for next year's top recruit flyer, Eva Merrell (#1 CA, #5 Nat), though supposed it's a wee bit too late for Katie to change her other club-mate, Alexis Margett,'s mind... :p

50 Breast - Seldom raced at the collegiate level, never @ NCAAs. This is where it starts to get interesting... The only 50 Breast times we have for our Bears are from an early season dual meet v. Wash State in Oct 2015 (i.e. start of training cycle, not shaved/rested/tapered, no racing suits, slow outdoor pool) where no one dipped below 30 sec - Thleen (30.35), Marina (30.72), Maija (30.87), Celina (30.88).

Ingrid's 28.01 PB was done @ the 2016 NCSA Spring Championship where prelims was conducted in SCY, finals in LCM. That was the fastest prelims time out of the whole field, trumping Maggie Aroesty's 28.29...Ingrid then finished 2nd (32.01) to Maggie (31.79) in the long-course format finals.

Where I'm going along with all of this (rather long winded exposition lol) is that as a :bear:, Ms. Wall may well be the quickest of the whole team here, i.e. a natural candidate for the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay (we all know how lil Bean would feel about this, i.e. :bluecarrot: :woohoo)

Paige Madden (#1 AL, #24 Nat) & Emma Seiberlich (#3 PA, #43 Nat) @ UGA this weekend:

Wow, Jack Bauerle's on quite a roll here, making up for the Bulldawgs' last couple of years of recruiting doldrums in a hurry!

Not content with Regan Barney (#3 TX, #25 Nat - SwimSwam's #20) & Sammie Burchill (#2 IN, #31 Nat)'s + a treble of additional commitments, he's already hosted both Swimwam's & SwimmingWorld's #1 recruit in the class, Courtney Harnish. Now, just this weekend alone, went and invited four of SwimSwam's Top 20 picks to Athens - #4 Forde, #8 Kukurugya, #13 Ciesla, #18 Madden!

Madden is an outstanding middle distance freestyler (her 500 free PB superior to that of anyone currently on Teri's team, as well as prospective recruit Olivia's, despite the latter's metres-to-yards conversion factor advantage), with solid backstroke chops to boot (currently faster than Courtney & Keaton in the 200 BK, just a bit behind Keaton in the 100 - naturally not in the same league as Thleen or Amy tho...but then again, very few are lol) .

Paige had previously taken official trips to UVa & A&M.

Emma, a member of the US national junior team, had visited Penn State, UVa, UK & IU in Sept.

No one yet, on the women's side...at least AFAIK (which isn't much!). A couple of the heavy hitters may or may not be waiting to make their decision after visiting LSJU (possibly this coming weekend?). Pretty sure that there are considerable behind-the-scene manoeuvres & activities going on that so far haven't made their way out into the public spotlight

As for the men, 4 commits at this point in time, I believe - Ryan Hoffer, Daniel Carr, Jarod Hatch, James Daugherty

However these are all "converted" times in Olivia's case, i.e. they tend to fall on the very optimistic side of things, regardless of whether they were originally swam in LCM or SCM

Currently unknown - how much of a time drop will Chenoa & Anina (hopefully) achieve in the next 12 months??

Very interesting stuff on Ingrid Wall's 50 Breast expertise, especially compared to Maggie's times. If she can extend out and score some 100 Breast individual points that would be very attractive. If Grace goes to the evil empire, we need to offer Ingrid more scholarship money.

We loss Pelton, Bootsma, Naze , Acker , Grima, and 2 divers from last year. Any idea how much scholarship money we would have available for the 2017 recruits? I'm thinking maybe the equivalent of 2 full scholarships or less?

Slightly above 3: Bootsma (full), Pelton (full), Naze+ Acker + Grima (~ full), divers (minimal). May be some left over from Runge: no way Hull got a full ride, so Teri probably split it among Hull, Naze, Acker, and Grima.
Top 10 Swimmers From The Class of 2017
2. Sierra Schmidt North Baltimore Aquatic Club Erdenheim, PA
Best Times: 1650 free 15:57.89, 500 free 4:38.47, 200 free 1:47.63, 400 IM 4:11.64

As with our boys recruits, the #2 swimmer is very much centered on the distance freestyles, but is great enough at them to merit a lofty rank. Schmidt is well under NCAA scoring range in the mile and 500, with a great 400 IM to boot. Schmidt has international experience from Junior Pan Pacs in 2014 and Pan Ams in 2015, plus she's a fan draw the college that snags her should see an attendance increase from fans who want to see Schmidt's famous pre-race dancing live and in person.

Interesting list with a lot of swimmers who could help the Bears:

-Breast: Maggie, Popov, Zhao, Belousova
-Sprint: Pitzer, Marta, Volpenhein
-Distance/IM: Harnish, Sierra, Forde, Ault
-Fly: Kuks, Margett

Good distance options, but Sierra will end up at Michigan and Harnish at Georgia or Tennessee. Hopeful on Ault, but Bears still need more distance and 400IM depth.

To the right of Abbey. Our breaststroker?

from UAC,

Dannie - Breast/IM? Does this mean they have given up on Grace Z? Has better 100 time than Ingrid Walls but 200 not as good as the other recruits.

• Dilsaver has a 1:02.15 in the 100 breast (NCAA B cut), and a 2:16.44 in the 200 breast. Also a 2:00.37 in the 200 IM, and 4:15.90 in the 400 IM.
• All 4 times are 2016 NCAA B cuts.

1) First of all, very impressed by your research unearthing Dannie's decision well ahead of the all big swim publications, Obear - well done Sherlock!!!

2) tedbear, you need to sue Salo haha (or keep your wants list to PM from now on )

3) Well, a belated welcome goes out to the luvly Dannie Dilsaver (#2 NE, #82 Nat) for having the foresight & brilliance in being the very first in the 2017 freshie class to commit to our special :bear: family! :cheer

Dannie will be a great asset for Teri at next season's dual meets, esp in the areas we have some notable holes to fill (i.e. breast & 400 IM). Her PBs as previously mentioned qualify for at least 4 2016 NCAA B cuts. As a matter of fact, Dilsaver would have got into the C final of the 100/200 breast (2016 cutoff qualifier swam 1:03.71/2:08.91 in prelims) + 200/400 IM (C qualifying swim = 2:03.29/4:22.59) at the 2016 edition of Pac-12s, thus contributing to our scoring there  Dannie had also earned 3 OT cuts and competed in those 3 events @ Olympic Trials.

On a more critical note (just cos Bears are held to the highest standards both athletically & academically heh), whilst it's true that Dannie was one of the biggest fishes in her state & HS championships, she will be facing infinitely stiffer competition at the NCAA Division I level. Maija is currently ahead of Dannie in both breast events (by 4 sec in the longer distance). However, Dilsaver is faster than Courtney & Maija in the IMs. She will have plenty of opportunity & time to develop her skills in the pool under Teri & Ian's tutelage, with the massive support of & unconditional encouragement from all her future training partners and friends!

Times & stats aside, I'm sure Teri was very encouraged by what she saw in Dannie other than the swimming alone, whether it be her potential to thrive @ UC Berkeley, and/or smashing fit & chemistry with her teammates when she had visited (obviously Dilsaver's academics would already be at a high level in order to apply to Cal), in order for McKeever to make a scholly offer to an out-of-state recruit, with more than ample budget/slots remaining for Grace and the likes if they should also decide to join Dannie

Will admit that by all accounts, Grace is more likely a furdette lean than a Golden Bear one, IMO. PASA swimmer, mum works @ LSJU etc. Disclaimer: The following is based purely on my own personal experiences and not meant to foster stereotyping or anything...but for most, if not all, of my Asian American friends in the Bay Area, Stanford seems to be their Holy Grail of Unis (i.e. there may be some pressure on GZ to embrace the tree from family/relatives - note that this is 100% speculation on my part since I don't know them!).

If Zhao isn't meant to be, would love to have breaststrokers Ingrid Wall or Alicia Harrison join commit Dannie Dilsaver! Alicia has the better 200 time, but Ingrid ultimately could bring more to the table for her sprint skillz incl. vying for a spot on the 200 medley relay, even tho she may cost Teri more due to being out-of-state. Could always wait for the top talents in the 2018 class I suppose, but don't think we can assume Zoe Bartel or Allie Raab will favour Cal or even give us a look, may as well spend some of the available scholly $ now hehe (there's also transfers or an international as additional options)

Regardless, Olivia Anderson would also be very welcome in my eyes due to our lack in distance, and build a bridge to the Canuck pipeline. As would versatile backstroker Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou from Santa Clara who is also accomplished in the 100 fly & 200 free.

Ashley Volpenhein would also be a very nice-to-have even if Bears aren't exactly dodgy in the sprint dept, as sprinters are always in demand due to their relay & scoring value. Ashley will have some tough decisions to make after taking her full quota of visits (assuming we'll see her @ Stanford Stadium this Sat).
