Ursus,

As always, great work posting photos of potential Bears. I also heard that high end recruits Luke Maurer (a double Stanford swimming legacy), and Canadian stand-out Sabastian Somerset were also on recuiting visits. Michael Jensen's younger brother, Matthew was also spotted.

Looks like Matthew Jensen (#85 Nat, #5 PA) will be joining new commit Forrest Frazier as a member of the Class of 2024, per his Instagram bio.

In response to Frazier's commit post: Congrats! Let's continue to build our class of '24! I only beat you by a few hours. GO BEARS

MATTHEW JENSEN'S VERBAL TO CAL WILL EXTEND FAMILY LEGACY ANOTHER 4 YEARS

BY ANNE LEPESANT | November 08th, 2018

Matthew Jensen, a junior at Upper Dublin High School in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, has announced his verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley for 2020-21. His older brother Michael Jensen is currently a junior on the Bears' roster. But there's more: their mother's godfather, Roger Olsen, won an NCAA title in the high jump in 1962 and played basketball for the Golden Bears.

"I'm very excited to announce my commitment to the Cal Bears! I'm proud to be joining an incredible team and outstanding university. I'd like to thank my family, coaches and friends for their support and guidance along the way. Go Bears!"

Jensen swims for his high school and for Upper Dublin Aquatic Club, both coached by Geoff Scheuer. A versatile swimmer, he placed 5th in the 100 breast (57.50) and 7th in the 100 fly (50.05) at the 2018 PIAA Boys 3A Swimming & Diving Championships. He also contributed to Upper Dublin's 4th-place 200 medley (21.85 butterfly) and 400 free (45.04 leadoff) relays.

In club swimming, Jensen had an outstanding summer that culminated at NCSA Summer Championship with new lifetime bests in the 50/100/200 free, 100/200 back, 50/100 breast, 100 fly, and 200 IM. He placed 5th in the 100 fly, 6th in the 100 free, 9th in the 100 back, 17th in the 50 breast, 19th in the 200 IM, and 25th in the 50 free. Jensen is a U.S. Open qualifier in the LCM 100 free (51.24), 100 back (57.55), and 100 fly (55.27), a Summer Juniors qualifier in the LCM 50 free (23.80), and a Winter Juniors qualifier in the LCM 200 IM (2:09.58). Jensen was invited to USA Swimming's 2018 National Select Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in October.

Top SCY times:
  • 100 free 45.04
  • 100 back 51.34
  • 100 breast 57.50
  • 100 fly 50.05
  • 200 IM 1:52.10
Iowa's Forrest Frazier has also verbally committed to the Cal class of 2024.

3. Jake Magahey Swim Atlanta Mill Creek High School Dacula, GA
Best Times: 500 free 4:16.88, 1000 free 8:55.33, 1650 free 14:52.85, 200 free 1:36.11
Distance swimmers don't usually rank this highly, but Magahey is special. He's already among the best distance prospects we've ranked, a year earlier than any other class we've ranked. He's already under NCAA invite level in the mile and not far off of scoring pace in the 500. Magahey is also rising rapidly. In the past year or so, he's dropped his 500 from 4:26 to 4:16. His 200 is also dropping fast, and is already fast enough to give him potential relay value down the road.
Visiting Georgia alongside #2 Alex Walsh & a bunch of 2019 recruits:

William Cole (#84 Nat, #1 KY), #3 Jake Magahey, Charlie Logan (#250 Nat, #9 GA) - 2019 commit, Harry Homans (#80 Nat, #1 RI) - 2019 commit, #2 Alex Walsh

11. Matt Brownstead Unattached State College Area High School Port Matlida, PA
Best Times: 50 free 20.08, 100 free 45.23, 200 free 1:39.42, 100 fly 49.25
If you value pure speed and think endurance can come around with training, this is the prospect for you. Brownstead has the class's best 50 and dropped about half a second in the past year there. He's got work to do in the 100 and 200, though. His 100 didn't drop much last year, but his 200 went from 1:42 to 1:39.
Matt: "I'm so excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Virginia to continue my athletic and academic career. I can't wait to be a part of such an amazing family."

7. Wyatt Davis Carmel Swim Club Carmel High School Carmel, IN
Best Times: 100 back 47.12, 200 back 1:44.37, 200 IM 1:47.95, 200 free 1:37.00
Davis heads the next tier of backstrokers in this deep class, with 100 back speed that would make him one of the best non-Ryan Hoffer recruits in years. He's had great time improvements, and those excellent 200 IM and 200 free times are just bonus. A 1:37.0 in the 200 also feels a lot better than 21.0/47.0 sprint speed, so keep an eye on Davis there for some potential big drops coming to make him a multi-distance relay prospect.

Wyatt: "Excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at the University of Michigan! Go Blue" #smittenbythemitten

CIF-CCS CHAMP DYLAN HAWK VERBALLY COMMITS TO CAL

Los Gatos, California's Dylan Hawk has announced his verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley for 2020-21. He will join Forrest Frazier and Matthew Jensen in the class of 2024.

"I am both proud and excited to announce my commitment to UC Berkeley! I know that this is the best decision for me because of the opportunity to swim under Dave Durden and Chase Kreitler, as well as the fantastic academic program and the great group of guys that I will have the privilege of training with. Go Bears!"

Hawk is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Los Gatos High School. As a sophomore he won the 200 free at the 2018 CIF-Central Coast Section Championships, going 1:37.49 to lead the nation for 15-year-old boys in the 2017-18 swim season. He also placed third in the 100 free (45.19), led off the 4th-place 200 free relay (21.36), and anchored the 400 free relay (44.77) to third. From there he went on to the 2018 California State Meet and finished 7th in both the 100 free (45.53) and 200 free (1:38.27).

Hawk had a strong LCM season which culminated in an appearance at Speedo Junior Nationals in Irvine, where he scored PBs in the 50/100/200m free. He recently competed at 2018 Winter Juniors West in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM and earned new PBs in the 50 free, 100 fly and 200 IM.

Top SCY times:
  • 200 free 1:37.49
  • 100 free 45.19
  • 50 free 20.90
  • 200 IM 1:51.56
  • 100 fly 50.51

Santa Clara Sprinter Dylan Hawk Verbals to Cal for 2020

Los Gatos, Calif. native and high school junior Dylan Hawk has recently announced his in-state verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley beginning in the fall of 2020.

Hawk swims year-round with the Santa Clara Swim Club under head coach Allison Beebe and is a four-time Winter Juniors qualifier which includes a U.S. Open standard in the 200 free. He recorded a trio of lifetime bests at Juniors West last month and placed 16th in the 100m free at Santa Clara Futures in August.

Also competing for Los Gatos High School, Hawk placed seventh in both the 100 free and 200 free at the CIF State Championships during his sophomore season. He also won the 200 free at CIF-Central Coast Sections in a quick 1:37.49, which was the fastest time in the nation for 15-year-old boys last year. Hawk has also earned both NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors.

He told Swimming World:
Quote:

"I am both proud and excited to announce my commitment to UC Berkeley! I know that this is the best decision for me because of the opportunity to swim under Dave Durden and Chase Kreitler, as well as the fantastic academic program and the great group of guys that I will have the privilege of training with. Go Bears!"
His best times include:
  • 50 free 20.90
  • 100 free 45.19
  • 200 free 1:37.49
  • 100 fly 50.51
Hawk will provide valuable sprint depth when he suits up for the Bears as a member of the class of 2024 following the graduations of Pawel Sendyk and Michael Jensen and he'll have one year of overlap with Ryan Hoffer. He would've scored in the C-final of the 200 free at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships and has made significant improvements each season with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go.

WAY TOO EARLY NCAA RECRUIT RANKS: BOYS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2020

ONES TO WATCH
Dare Rose (Scarlet Aquatics / Piscatawny, NJ) Rose is really good at a lot of things, but not good enough at one thing in short course to make this list. On the other hand, he's far, far more accomplished in long course, so there's chance his short course makes a big leap to catch up throughout high school. He's a 48.5/1:46.5 butterflyer and a 1:48.8/3:55 IMer short course, compared to 54.7/1:59.7 in the long course fly races. But his 21.8/46.0/1:38.1/4:24.5 short course freestyles are nowhere near his excellent 24.0/50.8/1:51.0/3:57.6 prowess in long course meters.

Dare Rose (CS ranking as of verbal: #1000+ Nat, #10 NJ) => Bears

---------

CLASS OF 2020 STANDOUT DARE ROSE MAKES EARLY COMMITMENT TO CAL

National Age Group record-holder and long course standout Dare Rose has made an early commitment to the University of California.

A current high school junior, Rose was just outside our top 20 when we ranked the high school class of 2020 recruits back in May. At the time, though, he had a solid argument for a top 20 ranking, and based only on long course prowess, he's top 10 at least.

Rose also improved all of his short course freestyle times from the 50 to the 200 over the winter, which significantly ups his relay value in the NCAA.

Rose holds USA Swimming's National Age Group record in the 200-meter freestyle for the 13-14 age group, having set that mark in 2017. He just turned 16 this fall, and with his times at age 15 (put up last summer), he sits only about a second off of 15-16 NAG records in the 100, 200 and 400 frees. In fact, he's 3rd in age group history in the 400-meter free and 8th in age group history in the 200-meter free with this summer still to come in that age group.

Cal has already hit the class of 2020 market hard. Rose joins Dylan Hawk, Forrest Frazier and Matthew Jensen as verbal commits to Cal from that graduating class.

Cheers for the FYI! Whilst I was aware that Dare's times in the little pool presently doesn't reflect his studliness in long course, was still more than a wee bit thrown off by CollegeSwimming having ranked him in the 1000+ spot nationally lol

6. Ethan Heasley Hillsboro Heat Swim Team Faith Bible High School Hillsboro, OR
Best Times: 400 IM 3:45.56, 200 IM 1:47.86, 1650 free 15:06.12, 1000 free 8:59.64, 500 free 4:19.82, 200 free 1:38.19, 200 fly 1:45.93
Heasley has impressive range between his strokes and his freestyle. He'd rank as the second-best pure distance swimmer in the class, but he's probably a better prospect as one of the class's elite IMers. His 400 has cut from 3:53 to 3:45 in the last year, and he only broke 1:50 in the 200 IM for the first time in March. In terms of freestyle, a sub-9:00 1000 is nothing to sneeze at, and he's also had huge drops in his 500.

Ethan: "I am extraordinarily excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue both my academic and athletic career at the University of Texas! I chose Texas because of the phenomenal team atmosphere and reputation, the fantastic facilities, and the high level academics. 2. Destin Lasco Pleasantville Aquatics Mainland Regional High School Pleasantville, NJ
Best Times: 100 back 45.93, 200 back 1:41.77, 100 free 43.62, 200 IM 1:44.59, 400 IM 3:48.22, 200 free 1:37.00, 50 free 20.72
With Foster probably focusing on IMs, Lasco is the best primary backstroke option in this class. His 200 is comparable than the last crew of elite backstrokers in recruiting (Michael Taylor/Austin Katz) and his 100 blows that duo out. Lasco also has the best 100 free in the class, which should eventually transfer over better to his 50 and 200 frees. Though it's the 200 IM that seems like a natural third event, already just a half-second out of 2018 NCAA invite range.

Superb addition to the class of 2020 for the Bears, and helps take the sting out of Urlando's legacy-laced decision to swim for Georgia (at least it wasn't Texas). Lasco is an elite backstroker who will overlap one year with the current backstroke duo of Mefford and Carr, and his 100 free time (currently best in class) adds to his relay value. The 2020 class is off to a great start as Forrest Frazier (ranked #18 by SS) has recently posted the top 100/200 breaststroke times for the class, surpassing the #5 rated Ethan Dang in the process. It would be nice to add a top flyer to the class and Ethan Hu from Cupertino has class times that rank him 2nd behind Urlando (but by a wide-margin) but I do not know if Hu has visited.

#2 DESTIN LASCO MAKES VERBAL COMMITMENT TO CAL FOR 2020-21

Destin Lasco Reflects on Junior Pan Pacs and Cal Commitment

From Fiji to Piscataway, New Jersey, Destin Lasco is making news whenever he steps into the pool. A junior swimming for Salvation Army Kroc Aquatics, Lasco has already qualified for the U.S. National Junior Team, earning him a trip to the Junior Pan Pacific Championships last summer. And starting in the fall of 2020, he will swim for one of the premier NCAA programs in the country, Cal-Berkeley.

However, the best part about Lasco's experiences the past few months happened very recently, when he was able to commit to Cal. When asked about this decision, Destin's smile could be seen from ear to ear as he described the magical swim program in Berkeley. He described the environment as, "world class, from the academics, to the coaches, Dave Durden and Chase Kreitler."

The coaches spoke of being an athlete both physically and mentally, emphasizing that success in the classroom was paramount, which struck a chord with Lasco. He also mentions that during his visit, "he bonded really well with the team" and could not pass up the opportunity, "to train with Olympians such as Ryan Murphy, Josh Prenot, and Nathan Adrian was awesome" and he felt blessed to be a part of such an amazing group of people.

Best Times: 200 back 1:45.59, 100 back 48.81, 100 fly 48.50, 200 free 1:37.04, 100 free 45.28, 50 free 20.93
Good at a lot of things, not great at any one. The 200 back is probably his best event right now after a drop from 1:50.2 to 1:45.5 in March. He also broke 50 in the 100 back for the first time in February and broke 50 in the 100 fly for the first time in November. Carrozza has an awesome event range and tremendous potential in a bunch of events. One big breakthrough in any of them and he's a top-10 guy instantly.

Coby: I'm excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Texas Swimming and Diving Class of 2024! Hook em!

Haven't seen verification of this anywhere else, but FWIW, according to College Swimming:

Hugo Chan (CS ranking as of verbal: #1000+ Nat, HK) => Cal???

"Because my coach called Sherry Tsai recommended it"

Note: Besides representing a pair of HS State records, that 1:35.17 is a new PB for Destin in the 200 Free (prev best = 1:36.83 from Jan), as is his 43.44 record in the 100 Free (prev best = 43.62 from 2017 Winter Jrs). That 100 Free time now establishes Destin as the fastest in his class (ahead of Horns commit Carson Foster & Dawgs legacy commit Gianluca Urlando).

Incidentally, Destin's 200 Free time would have seeded #13 in the B final of Pac-12s today, in a relatively off event for our 2020 Baby Bear backstroker.

LASCO'S 1:35.1/43.4 HEAD NJ INDIVIDUAL STATE MEET

"Mainland Regional High School junior Destin Lasco broke two state record to highlight New Jersey's individual high school state meet.

Lasco was dominant in the mid-sprint freestyles. He went 1:35.17 to win the 200 free by more than three seconds. He was almost three seconds faster even than last year's winner. Lasco set a new state record in that event, and later added a 43.44 state record in the 100 free. That win came by about a second, and was almost two faster than the 2018 champ."
