There's no denying the massive interest from many of the top recruits in taking a trip to Berkeley - it's just that I don't think that a formal group visit has been planned or offered to the 2020 class until this Spring semester at the earliest, for whatever reason (hopefully a sound one!).

Perhaps we'll get to finally welcome some talented 2020 visitors come 1-2 Feb (v. $C & UCLA)?

Or perhaps on 16 Feb (dual v. LSJU, will be shown on Pac-12 Networks)

Well goes to show how much (or rather how little) I know haha - whilst there may not have been any high profile 2020 group trips to Cal yet (to my limited knowledge), individual unofficial visits have certainly taken place!

For example (cheers bearz012), Isabel Gormley (#27 Nat, #1 NY), who has already taken trips to LSJU & UVA, has been spotted @ Legends today!.

Gulp..the timing of the visit? Make sense for her to visit with MLK holiday off but wondering who is there to meet & greet her, with the swim team still in Hawaii?

In terms of valued targets for 2020, guess we haven't really talked about Isabel Gormley over here, having focussed mostly on the top tier of high profile prospects in what promises to be a really strong recuiting class - one which has been widely touted to be the best class since the 2015 edition which had gifted Bears with the Dream Team & more.

Well, to make up partly for that, note that Cal's first known 2020 visitor has some impressive creds to her name, most notable of which is Gormley's recent progression curve.

Not to mention, IG additionally can lay claim to some serious chops in long course, not unlike that of her fellow visitor to the Farm this weekend, Emma Weyant:

ISABEL GORMLEY BECOMES 3RD-FASTEST 16YO IN NATION WITH 4:15.69 400 FR

AGUA's 16-year-old Isabel Gormley dropped over four seconds and now sits behind only Madelyn Donohoe and Regan Smith in the ranks of 16-year-old women nation-wide.
Most importantly, that Isabel has selected Cal, LSJU & UVA for her visits surely attests to her academics?

Haven't researched Gormley's stats that deeply or indeed looked at all her events, but here are a few notable points from a brief & limited preview, referenced against a few of our 2019 Baby Bears:

* 400 IM *
4:08.80 Gormley (prev PB = 4:13.71 @ March 2017)
4:12.08 Ivey
4:13.94 Clark
4:15.41 Fiorilli
4:15.83 Dimeco
4:16.55 Klinker

IG's PB in the 400 IM falls just a few places out of qualifying for 2018 NCAA FINALS, and she will have a year & a half to make further inroads in her time standards before graduating HS.

* 500 Free *
4:44.26 DiMeco
4:45.58 Gormley
4:46.25 Kalandadze
4:46.73 Klinker
4:49.92 Fiorilli

* 200 IM *
1:55.77 Ivey
1:57.32 Clark
1:58.68 Spitz
1:59.57 Gormley
2:01.49 DiMeco
2:02.88 Fiorilli
2:03.47 Carter
2:04.25 Davidson
2:05.41 Klinker
2:08.53 Kalandadze

Here are some of Gormley's other events when compared to some of the big names in her class, albeit these events aren't necessarily the primary races for most of her peers here, incl. for Gormley:

* 100 Free * = 50.71 - currently faster than #18 Nordmann, #4 Bray, #6 Bacon

* 200 Free * = 1:48.81 - currently faster than #13 Albiero, #16 Cooper, #3 Stadden, #6 Bacon, #5 Dobler & Sticklen

Lots of room for improvements tho in her * 100 Breast * -> 1:11.25 ! (but that's from back in 2016) - a mite surprised that IG's 400 IM times are so strong in spite of her breast speed, reckon it's a testimony to her versatility...

On a sobering note, before we begin to invest a lot of hope for a Cal verbal from Isabel Gormley in these early stages, bearz012 did point to this article from Swimming World where Gormley's admiration for the universally well-liked Lia Neal (ex-furdette Olympian who was instrumental in luring Manual & Ledecky over to the Dark Side) could turn out to be a major influence on her collegiate decision...

Just idly thinking out loud here lol - know that we've naturally been all focussed on the 2020 "big guns" (#1 Regan Smith, #2 Alex Walsh, #3 Isabelle Stadden, #4 Olivia Bray, #6 Phoebe Bacon) on these pages...

But am quite curious how some of you may feel about the (purely hypothetical/speculative ) scenario where Teri was to explore other equally promising options instead (taking into account academics, team & school fit, progression curve & upside etc.), and so head in a rather different direction than perhaps originally expected - such as looking at #8 Quinn Schaedler {#3 TX} & Samantha Pearson {#1 CA}...in addition to #3 Isabelle Stadden {#1 MN}, of course?

Still sort of standing by my earlier opinion above, but just wanted to add a wee caution on not losing sight of what should be foremost on Teri's list of priority gets for 2020, as far as stroke & distance are concerned.

In strictly terms of NCAA scoring, Bears will bid a fond farewell to Billy & Bug after 2019 NCAAs, then Abbey, Madds & Keeks at the conclusion of the following season *sniff*

So projected areas of greatest needs will be in sprint & mid-sprint free, along with fly & back (particular in the sprint area, i.e. medley relays).

The Class of 2020 is over flowing with first tier backstrokers.

Interestingly enough, the top sprint-oriented freestyle times below are all held by stroke aces with top-end versatility rather than by the pure sprinters themselves, i.e. Regan (100, 200 Free) & Alex (50 Free). Not too surprising as this 2020 class is particularly deep in back & fly talent, and has been frequently lauded as one of the most promising since the landmark 2015 class that had gifted Bears with the Dream Team.

Now the outlook for the 2021 class will likely be a bit different, since Gretchen (Alex's younger sibling), who's sprint free oriented but with some outstanding versatility (52.85-100 back, 52.81-100 fly...not at all shabby, eh?! ) is expected to lead the 50/100/200 Free lists for her HS class (GW's currently 21.85/47.93/1:45.80 there as a HS freshman...blinking brill times!!)

Our 2019 Baby Bears will bring in some welcome relief in the distance & longer fly & IM areas - but gosh, how can one possibly replace an American Record sprinter in Abbey, an elite flyer & rangy freestyler of Katie's caliber (lately discovered sprinter post-neck injury lol), or a super versatile leading backstroker like Amy who just casually happens to be a top level sprint to mid-free ace to boot??!

Hence the importance of securing the bag when it comes to recruiting the top-tier 2020 studs who have yet to commit!

Should imo encompass some permutation of #2 Alex Walsh, #3 Isabelle Stadden, #1 Regan Smith & #6 Phoebe Bacon as reckon these bright prospects will be difference makers to whatever lucky programme they end up signing t,, as well as being potential Olympians.

Keep in mind that of the Top 5, #4 Olivia Bray (->UT) & #5 Kaitlyn Dobler (->'SC) are already off the table, having announced their verbals earlier...

Ideally rounded out by academically-inclined prospects who project to be a good fit with the team... Thinking of #8 Quinn Schaedler, #7 Emma Sticklen (or perhaps freestyle talents #9 Maxine Parker & #16 Grace Cooper??) + a couple of top in-states such as #19 Anicka Delgado who projects to be a relay asset with her free & fly skills (other CA prospects include but not limited to Samantha Pearson, Nicole Oliva, Tea Laughlin) - heck, maybe even an international or mid/lower-tier legacy?

Or are my expectations & hopes over-reaching more than a mite here, even by the uber lofty standards of our famed Golden Bears lol :p

Just keeping my fingers crossed that Teri & Sarah are forward thinking, having already planned for this era of ever earlier recruiting in the face of NCAA recruiting rule changes, and keeping pace if not staying ahead of the competition in this regard.

Playing host exclusively to the 2019 class made sense in this instance cos of the relatively sizeable contingent of our talented 2019 commits - but OTOH I do hope that the "official" recruiting weekend (also Junior Day), for the top 2020 prospects at least, will be scheduled sooner rather than later out here in Berkeley...if only to pave the way for high profile & favoured 2020 recruits such as Alex Walsh & Isabelle Stadden to verbal here early, thus encouraging other valued targets to follow in a domino effect type of wave...

Not mentioning any specific names at this early stage until the recruits involved share this trip of theirs publicly - but just a wee sneak preview that a couple of high-profile/priority prospects had paid a visit to Bear Territory very recently!!!

Walsh siblings making waves again - 2020 Alex (versatility/speed) & 2021 Gretchen (speed!!!)

---------

ALEX WALSH BREAKS 6-YEAR OLD NATIONAL AGE GROUP RECORD IN 200 BREAST

17-year old Alex Walsh swam a 2:05.87 in the 200 breaststroke, which breaks the old 17-18 record of 2:05.99 set in 2013 by Annie Zhu.

Zhu was a freshman in college when she swam her time, at the 2013 SEC Championships, whereas Walsh is still just a junior in high school. That wound up being the fastest time of Zhu's career.

Alex Walsh is part of the new breed of super-versatile swimmer whose range knows no bounds. Evidence of that comes in that she split 23.64 in the 50 backstroke leading off Nashville's record-setting relay on Saturday.

For comparison's sake: only 3 swimmers split faster than that at NCAAs last year. One, Ally Howe, won the 100 back NCAA title and is the 2nd-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 back. Another, Kathleen Baker, is the World Record holder in the 100 back in long course. Walsh was within a tenth of them both. (The 3rd was Indiana senior Ally Rockett).

---------

GRETCHEN WALSH BREAKS SIMONE MANUEL'S NATIONAL AGE GROUP RECORD (100 Free)

Gretchen Walsh of the Nashville Aquatic Club broke the 15-16 National Age Group Record in the girls' 100 yard freestyle. Swimming in finals in Knoxville, she posted a 47.49, which broke the old record of 47.73 set by Simone Manuel in 2013.

Walsh's previous best time was a 47.79 done at Winter Juniors East in December.

Walsh tied the 15-16 National Age Group Record in the 50 free on Saturday (21.82). She now holds 3 National Age Group Records in yards individually, plus a relay.

---------
  • UPDATE =>
NASHVILLE GIRLS WIN 4 MORE TO CLOSE SOUTHERN PREMIER MEET

Alex Walsh came back in the very-next girls' open race and won the 100 fly in 51.31. Her previous best in that event was 54.15, and that swim now vaults her up to 8th in the all-time 17-18 age group rankings (even as just a 17-year old), passing the likes of Kendyl Stewart, Misty Hyman, Elaine Breeden, and Kelsi Dahlia.

From UVa's extremely ecstatic outburst of emotions on social media, it wouldn't surprise me if their latest 2020 recruit = Alex Walsh (if on the women's side)

If that's indeed so, WOW - DeSorbo & co's massive gain, our (and every other collegiate swim programme in the running)'s loss... *sniff*

Good point - Swimswam's #6 Phoebe's massively talented with quite an upside, so would merit that degree of gushing accolades should she turn out to be the mystery 2020 Hoos commit which DeSorbo's so hyped up over (even by his usual, er, extrovert standards lol)!

Bacon has visited UVa, UM, UT & UGA as posted earlier on in this board topic (see bearz's comprehensive list on pg 2). She's actually ranked #3 on College Swimming as of today, behind (their) #1 Alex & #2 Regan...

Berkoff, Regan, and younger Nordmann are probably a given, but if AW goes to the dark side, women's college swimming will be unwatchable for years.

Crikey, and that 100 Back NAG record of Regan's was achieved in a prelims session to boot, wow! (see SS write-up below)

Keeping my fingers (massively) crossed that #1 Regan Smith has her collegiate sights set on a school other than the Farm (hint: there's a decidedly finer institution & swim programme just a few miles NE, across the Bay ) - otherwise tedbear will just have to give up following women's college swimming for a number of years lol

In related news, there are now some indications that the Hoos' latest 2020 super-recruit may well turn out to be #2 Alex Walsh...

--------

REGAN SMITH DROPS 49.74 100 BACK IN PRELIMS TO CRUSH 17-18 NAG RECORD

Coming off the No. 2 17-18 100 fly performance of all-time Friday at Cary Sectionals, 17-year-old Regan Smith obliterated the 100 back 17-18 national group record in prelims Saturday. The next-fastest finisher was 14-year-old Claire Curzan who obliterated a NAG record of her own in the 100 fly yesterday in 53.14.

Smith, who turned 17 in February, split 24.27/25.47 for a final time of 49.74. The previous NAG record of 50.50 was set by Amy Bilquist, now a senior at Cal, at Pac-12s in 2016. Smith also took nearly a second off her own previous best time of 50.58, set leading off a relay at 2018 Speedo Winter Juniors West as a 16-year-old last December.

With this swim, Smith becomes the No. 3 short course yards 100 backstroker of all-time, with the fourth-fastest performance.

Technically speaking, 10 swimmers + 1 diver (thus far) will be coming in as our 2019 class of Baby Bears, if one includes Izzy (started on 3 Jan) & Chloe (who's taking classes this semester, but blue-shirting swim competition-wise) - but hey, who's splitting hairs, eh?

Welcome Cassie

Brill to see the diving side of our programme hasn't been overlooked with all the talented swimmers coming in next year, plus Cassie's strong academics naturally earn her an extra mark in her favour

Would also welcome #9 Maxine Parker and/or #16 Grace Cooper since freestyle sprinters are always of great value esp for our programme - though TBH haven't personally come across any overt indicators of either recruit exhibiting a bias in favour of Bears...

Golly gosh - yet another future talent with a massive upside whom we have discussed back on the 2019 Recruits thread...

Claire's time this evening would have placed 3rd in the 100 Free @ 2019 Pac-12s, behind Abbey & Billy, not to mention winning the B final @ 2018 NCAAs - all from a HS Freshman to boot!!!

Er, Gretchen who?? lol

Just j/k - reckon Bears would love to welcome both Gretchen & Claire down the road - well I'm sure Teri & Sarah already have both of their names at the top of the list

CLAIRE CURZAN, 14, WIPES OUT MISSY FRANKLIN 100 FR NAG RECORD 47.67

Fourteen-year-old Claire Curzan has broken her second national age group record of the week at Cary Sectionals, and this one's a particular doozy: she went 47.67 to take down Missy Franklin's previous 13-14 record of 47.94, which stood since 2010.

Earlier in the meet, Curzan re-broke her own 100 fly NAG record, going 50.64. Saturday, she went 22.01 in the 50 freestyle to become the No. 3 16-and-under performer of all time, just .01 off Gretchen Walsh's 13-14 NAG.

Curzan is just the second 13-14-year old in history to go under 48 seconds. She is now also the second-fastest 16&U performer of all time, ahead of Simone Manuel's 47.73 from 2013.

Not to be outdone by Claire, Regan has now broken Thleen's American Record in the 200 Back (1:47.30 from 2018 NCAAs), with her 1:47.16...just wow!

Looks like she also broke the 100 back AR leading off the medley relay, 49.66...

Completely floored by a brand-new AR in the 100 and 200 backstroke today as a 17 year-old. Simply astounding! (And on that note, truly praying to the recruiting gods.)

I'm I misreading the Instagram that Reagan has not committed to become a farm gal?

What Regan Smith's Stunning Sectionals Means for the World

Regan Smith had been skirting American records all weekend long, missing Beata Nelson's 100 back record Saturday by seven hundredths in prelims (49.74) and then a tenth in finals (49.77). But on Sunday, she topped Kathleen Baker's American record in the 200 back with a 1:47.16 before leading off Riptide's 400 medley relay in 49.66, one hundredth under the Nelson record.

Two remarkable efforts, especially when one considers recent history. Baker's record lasted just one year after she swam a 1:47.30 on the way to winning last year's NCAA title, much quicker than the best efforts of previous Golden Bears Elizabeth Pelton (1:47.84) and Missy Franklin (1:47.91).

As for the 100 back, Natalie Coughlin held that record and the distinction as the only woman under 50 seconds for 15 years before Ally Howe blasted a shocking 49.69 at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships. Nelson beat that mark by two hundredths this past fall at the Texas Invitational.

And now, Smith has swum faster than any of them.
