Not that Meehan's Furdette Machine will be giving much ground to the "upstart" challenger anytime soon...

Based on the as yet uncommitted top talent who have taken trips to the Farm - #1 Regan Smith, #9 Emma Weyant, #10 Lillie Nordmann, #14 Isabel Gormley, #24 Janelle Rudolph & #34 Samantha Pearson (national rankings according to College Swimming) - LSJU would easily lay a legit claim to the #2 spot (if not the top) for this uber recruiting class - if the Trees can secure a majority of those 6 listed top prospects, starting with Regan!

There's some speculation that Pearson may be Ivies bound though, based upon her parents' legacies...

Looks like #1 Gretchen Walsh, #2 Torri Huske, #5 Ashley Strouse, and HM Meghan Lynch visited LSJU today with the 2020 commits......

The 2020 Sapling commits contingent over the weekend did number #34 Samantha Pearson amongst them (2nd photo in Regan's IG post below):

This being Pearson's follow-up visit might well imply that SP is more likely to be bound for the Farm than to an Ivy?

Samantha: "I'm so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at Stanford University next fall. I want to thank my family, teammates, coaches, and teachers for all their help and support. Go Card!!"

Also seems like we have two dive commits! Kayla Haigh and Francesca Colby, both out of California.

Bears Add 7 Recruits For 2020-21

Class Brings Strong National, International Experience To Cal

BERKELEY - Cal women's swimming & diving head coach Teri McKeever announced the signing of seven recruits to National Letters of Intent Wednesday, adding five swimmers and two divers to the Golden Bears' roster.

"This group has a good balance of national and international experience," McKeever said. "We feel they will come in and develop into significant contributors for us in the years to come. They are good fits academically and are interested in getting a world-class education to go with their world-class athletic experience."

Heading the class is Isabelle Stadden, a backstroke specialist from Blaine, Minnesota. A member of the U.S. National Team, Stadden earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter back at the Pan American Games this past summer and captured a gold medal in the 200 back at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in 2018.

Two other members of the group competed at the World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, in July 2019. Emily Gantriis swam for her home country of Denmark, placing 37th in the 200-meter free. She also owns a bronze medal in the 400 free relay from the 2018 European Championships. In addition, Nicole Oliva represented the Philippines at both the 2017 and 2019 world meets, most recently taking 31st in the 400 free at the 2019 championships.

Mara Allen, a freestyler from Folsom who own school records in the 50, 100 and 200 free, and Tea Laughlin, a three-time team Swimmer of the Year from Ventura, round out the list of swimmers joining the Bears for 2020-21.

Cal also added a pair of talented divers from the Mission Viejo Nadadores in Southern California. Francesca Colby has competed at Junior Olympics nationals since 2014 and was a finalist on platform in the 14-15 age group in 2015, while Kayla Haigh started diving at Junior Nationals in 2011 and placed 13th at the CIF state meet this past year.

As a team, the Golden Bears have finished among the top 3 at the NCAA Championships each of the past 11 years, a run that has included four national titles.

Emily's commitment is absolutely huge for our Bears, if we want to continue our top 3 streak. I'm not saying that she is on the same level as Abbey, but she will be asked to fill in the void. With Eloise, Izzy, and now Emily, our sprints will be in good shape for the future, but of course, it could be more complete, and insanely better if we also get a commitment from the Golden Ticket, who is definitely on Abbey's level.

Cal will be losing three point scorers in this senior class: Abbey Weitzeil, Maddie Murphy & Keaton Blovad.

In the incoming 2020 class of five swimmers, are there three recruits that have potential to replace them? I would guess that #3 ranked recruit, Isabelle Stadden, could be a bigtime backstroker. She could help offset the loss of star Abbey Weitzeil. Can Tea Laughlin, Emily Gantriis (Denmark), Nicole Oliva (Saint Francis (CCS)) c/o the Phillipines and/or Mara Allen fill the roles of MM & KB? GO BEARS!

DANISH NATIONAL TEAM-ER EMILY GANTRIIS JOINS CAL CLASS OF 2024

Danish sprinter Emily Gantriis has signed a national letter of intent (NLI) with the Cal women, making the class of 2024 grow to seven women.

TOP TIMES (LCM/SCY converted)
  • 50 free - 25.49 / 22.24
  • 100 free - 55.61 / 48.65
  • 200 free - 2:01.38 / 1:46.46
  • 400/500 free - 4:23.22 / 4:54.92
Gantriis competed for Denmark at the 2019 World Championships this past summer, where she swam to a 37th-place finish in the 200 free (2:05.44). Recently, Gantriis competed at the Budapest stop of the 2019 FINA World Cup tour, where she reached the final in the 50 free and 100 free. She posted a 25.67 for sixth in the 50 and a 56.39 for seventh in the 100, though she was a bit quicker in prelims (56.04).

Gantriis is an important snag; Cal needs sprint talent to mitigate the losses of outgoing American record-holding sprinters Abbey Weitzeil (individual 50y free, 200y and 400y free relays) and Maddie Murphy (200y free relay). While the incoming class has some freestyle firepower, it doesn't have the pure sprint spark that other top programs have coming in; that said, Gantriis' long course prowess in the 50 and 100 free would rank very highly in any of the high school classes of recent memory.

With her converted times, Gantriis looks likely to jump onto Cal relays from the get-go. She's also at Pac-12 A-final level speed in the 50 and 100 free and in B-level range in the 200 free, while her 50 free and 100 free converted time would've missed NCAA individual invites by hundredths to last season. Gantriis would've ranked #4 in the 50 free, #5 in the 200 free, and #6 in the 100 free on Cal's roster last year.

Gantriis joins Isabelle Stadden, Nicole Oliva, Mara Allen, Francesca Colby, Kayla Haigh, and Ta Laughlin in Cal's class of 2024 on the women's side; they all signed NLIs today.

Thanks for posting! Looking thru their resume, no fly or breast in this group. As someone mentioned earlier with Ivey & Bayer graduating in 2021 it would be nice to bring in another flyer to add to our future. Are there any other recruits still available..maybe another international swimmer?

Don't worry OBear. This is the Class of 2020. Teri is looking at multiple Flyers and Breaststrokers for the Class of 2021.

Don't worry OBear. This is the Class of 2020. Teri is looking at multiple Flyers and Breaststrokers for the Class of 2021.

Well, at a glance, we'd be bidding a sad farewell to seniors Dubs (free), Keeks (back/im/free), Madds (fly/free), Coco (back/im), Aisy (back/free), Alexa B (breast/im) after 2020 NCAAs.

Would naturally be fab to reload with a *FLY* stud in this 2020 class to make up for Maddie's loss...but meanwhile we still have versatile Izzy to call upon, with potential depth in the guise of Cass, Elise, Dani in the sprint fly dept, and Rachel, Ashlyn, Sarah in the longer distance butterfly - assuming suitable development + recovery from injuries all around.

As tedbear had pointed out, Teri & Dani K are already look ahead to the 2021 class to recruit a suitable top fly talent, i.e. #1 Gretchen Walsh (well #2 Huske would be a top candidate too if she wasn't looking more & more like a Furdette or Ivies lean), supported by in-state Cal visitor Mia Kragh, and Cal commit McKenna Stone (with further improvements, freestyle being her primary stroke).

Another impactful flyer if we were to scout north of the border would be Gigi Sasseville (#26 Nat, #2 ON) who holds a promising sprint fly best of 59.76.

Closer home, relatively lower profile (outside of SS' Top 20) but talented butterfly prospects may include Morgan Brophy (#56 Nat, #2 AZ), Lily Gardner (#90 Nat, #2 OR) for consideration...assuming academics, team fit & mutual interest are a go.

Bears probably won't be graduating any NCAA scoring *BREASTSTROKERS* after this season (other than Abbey who's much more valuable in her primary stroke ) - Ema & Ali will still be around (with Emma in the developmental stages). So less of an urgent need to nail down a breast stud for 2020...although Cal visitor & 2020 Bruins commit Bailey Herbert (#20 Nat, #2 BC) would have been a nice catch.

As for the 2021 class... sprint breast candidates who have yet to commit may include Berkeley visitor Ellie Andrews (#12 Nat, #1 OH), Kiwi Brearna Crawford (#24 Nat), SJ local Skyler Smith (#134 Nat, #13 CA).

A good distance breast prospect would be HM Annika McEnroe (#34 Nat, SC #1) , who's quite versatile with strengths additionally in both flys & the longer IM.

Decorated list here, ft. Alex Walsh (UVA), Gretchen Walsh ('21), Claire Curzan, Torri Huske ('21), Justina Kozan, Emma Weyant (UVA), Phoebe Bacon (Wisconsin), and...

ISABELLE STADDEN

Whereas Bacon is a little bit ahead of Stadden in the 100 (59.02 to 59.69), Stadden has the edge in the 200 with a lifetime best of 2:08.16. Her seed time of 2:08.39 puts her third behind leader Lisa Bratton and Alex Walsh, though; she and Walsh went head-to-head at the 2019 Pan American Games in the 200 back, with Walsh edging her for gold, but Stadden dropped a lifetime best 2:08.16 to win the event at the 2019 Pro Swim Series Greensboro. We're really witnessing an absurd spike in women's backstroke talent, a discipline in which the United States already has a dominant and star-studded history.

Women's 200 Back

A day after one of the biggest upsets of the meet where Phoebe Bacon took down Regan Smith in the 100 back, Bacon was on the other end of that upset on Saturday night in the 200 as another fellow high school senior Isabelle Stadden ran down Bacon on the final 50 of the 200 back with a 2:08.49.

Stadden just missed the US Open meet record of 2:08.42 set by Hayley McGregory in 2008.

Stadden was just off her best time of 2:08.1 from the Pro Swim Series earlier this year in Greensboro as she has also put herself into the talks of making the Olympic team next year in this event.

This final notably did not have world record holder Regan Smith, who will be in the 200 fly later, nor did it have Kathleen Baker, who will be swimming in the ISL Las Vegas final later this month.

Stadden will be a freshman at Cal Berkeley next fall.

Amy Bilquist was fifth at 2:11.28.

OMG! That last underwater turn! Kaboom! Her turns and under waters are getting better. Teri might not need to do much refining after all.

6 SWIMMERS TO WATCH AT 2019 U.S. WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS WEST

ISABELLE STADDEN, 17, AQUAJETS (MN)

One of the better junior backstrokers in the nation (and that's saying something with the current crop of elite juniors), Isabelle Stadden is far-and-away the top seed into both backstroke races this week. Stadden was a silver medalist in the 200-meter back at Pan Ams last summer. Now only about five months into the 17-18 age group, Stadden has a great shot at moving immediately into the top 10 American backstrokers of all-time in that age group.

Her career-best 200 back (1:50.37) would already rank 7th in 17-18 age group history, and that's even without a time drop. And her lifetime-best 100 back (51.23) would be 12th. She's got a shot to become the 6th 17-18 ever (and just the 16th American of any age) to break 1:50 in the 200 back.

The versatile California signee (and high school senior) will have a shot at a few more wins this week as well, swimming the 200 IM (5th seed), 50 free (5th), 100 breast (20th), and 100 free (24th).

Brilliant - a 3 sec drop! Methinks Isabelle may have finally discovered her 3rd event @ NCAAs (Day 2) to complement her superb 100 & 200 Backs!

That 1:56.55 would actually have earned an invite to 2019 NCAAs (1:56.76 was the cutoff invite time last season for the 200 IM), and within 0.03 sec of securing a B final berth last March, i.e. knocking on scoring territory.

By the time Belle starts her froski season here, Izzy (1:53.87), Sarah Darcel (1:54.50) & Alicia (1:54.68) will be the only Bears still on the team who have gone faster than Stadden in this event - that is, unless/until Isabelle gets even faster in the next 9 months

Oh, that personal best time would also rank 14th= amongst all the Division I swimmers currently for the 2019-2020 season...

    • UPDATES (race videos) =>

    200 IM:

Baby Bear Isa's in lane 5 (#1), Saplings Janelle Rudolph (#2) & Samantha Pearson (#7) in lanes 4 & 7 respectively, and Cal de-commit Gracie Felner in lane 2 (#4):

Smooth easy speed from Isabelle on her signature backstroke to pull ahead of the field, caught by Janelle on the breast leg, but a statement last wall from Stadden had our future Bear prevail over the furdette-to-be!

Forgot to mention that Stadden had also surpassed her old best of 24.43 in the 50 Back with a 24.31, leading off Aquajets in the 200 Medley Relay race last night.

Isabelle's in lane 4. That winning time of 51.34 is Stadden's 3rd fastest lifetime swim (PB = 51.23 from 2019 NCSA Champs, has also put down a 51.33 @ 2018 NCSA).

Tea Laughlin also in the A final, finishing 4th with a 53.75 from lane 6. Laughlin's personal best is a 52.58 from last year's edition of this meet, has also done a 52.77 @ 2019 CIF State.

Although just shy of her PB, that 1:50.50 of Stadden's would actually rank her #3 amongst all NCAA Division I swimmers at this stage of the season.

    2019-2020, Women, 200 Back, SCY, Division 1

For a wee spot of context, the fastest 200 Back time from a Bear thus far this season would be Keeks' 1:54.00, good for #27 nationally.

The 2020 recruiting class will bring a massive influx of elite backstrokers - our own Isabelle Stadden (Cal), World Record holder Regan Smith (LSJU - if she doesn't go pro after Tokyo :p), Alex Walsh (UVa), Phoebe Bacon (UW) and more, so look forward to some epic clashes of the backstroke titans then...Go Backstroke U!

RE-RANK: TOP 20 GIRLS NCAA SWIMMING RECRUITS, CLASS OF 2020

    5. Isabelle Stadden (Previous Rank: #4) Aquajets Swim Team Blaine High School Blaine, MN **Verbally committed to Cal**
    Best Times: 200 back 1:50.37, 100 back 51.23, 200 IM 1:56.55, 400 IM 4:15.77, 100 fly 54.39, 100 free 49.48, 50 free 22.71
Stadden is more of a 200-based backstroker, about a half-second faster than Bacon in the 200 but a half-second slower in the 100. Her best senior-year drop was in the 200 IM, which has always been a very good tertiary event Stadden went from 1:59.5 to 1:56.5 and is on the cusp of NCAA scoring level there. She's got international experience, joining Walsh and Bacon on the U.S. Pan American Games team last summer and winning individual silver and relay gold. The backstroke drops have tailed off a little for Stadden she cut about a half-second in the long course 100 and a tenth in the long course 200 last year, and her short course times didn't change. She's also only cut about a tenth of a second in her 100-yard back since our original sophomore rankings. But Stadden, too, was an Olympic hopeful who probably had her eyes fully on long course for her senior year. Here's Stadden's 200-meter back best from December (lane 5, black/pink cap) she shows remarkable patience and really closes well, surging by Bacon late. You'd like to see Stadden develop a little more front-end speed (especially with the lack of 100 back drops recently), but that can sometimes come with college-level strength gains.

    HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Nicole Oliva (Previous Rank: N/A) Peak Swimming St. Francis High School Santa Clara, CA **Verbally committed to Cal**
    Best Times: 200 free 1:46.32, 500 free 4:42.51, 1000 free 10:01.25, 1650 free 16:28.13, 100 back 53.71
Oliva has pretty interesting range a 200 freestyler who can swim all the way up to the mile with some of the better prospects in the class.

    BEST OF THE REST:

Due to her impending superstar status (esp if RS blows up @ Tokyo!), there might be a few concerns whether Regan would end up sticking with her full 4 years of collegiate eligibility as the financial lure of the professional route will surely beckon to her sooner than later!

It looks like Smith can earn money and swim ncaa all 4 years if she wants to.
