Cheers for the heads up! A few highlights from the article:

    ---------

2018 U.S. NATIONALS: OFFICIAL SWIMSWAM AWARDS

FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE MEET - KATHLEEN BAKER

Baker tied Katie Ledecky to lead all women with three individual wins in Irvine. She also set the meet's only world record, a smashing 58.00 in the 100 back that both won a historically-brilliant race and set up the U.S. women's medley relay for continued world dominance.

MALE SWIMMER OF THE MEET - Honorable Mention:

    • Ryan Murphy - The Cal postgrad looks to be back in form. He posted the top times in the world in the 50 and 100 backstrokes, and the 2nd-fastest time in the 200 back, winning all three races.

WOMEN'S PERFORMANCE OF THE MEET - KATHLEEN BAKER, 100 BACKSTROKE

Picked by some to perhaps lose her American backstroke crown to youngster Regan Smith, Baker proved herself among the greatest backstrokers on the planet, blasting a world record 58.00 to win the women's 100 back. She won that race by a commanding seven tenths of a second over what might have been the most loaded event field of the meet more on that below.

    Honorable Mention:
    • Kathleen Baker, 200 IM - Another world-leading time for Baker, this one was easily the most unexpected. Baker dropped more than 3 seconds and beat a field of IM specialists in at event that she hadn't seriously competed in in long course since 2015.

MEN'S PERFORMANCE OF THE MEET - Honorable Mention:
    • Ryan Murphy, 50 back - Sure, the stroke 50s don't mean as much in terms of world rank, but Murphy's American record swim ultimately gave him a sweep of the backstroke titles and the world's #1 spot in the event. It also made a clear statement that Murphy coming off a small regression in the 2017 means business as he attempts to continue the long-running American dominance in the men's backstrokes.

    WOMEN'S RACE OF THE MEET - WOMEN'S 100 BACKSTROKE

It's been a Baker-centric awards ballot on the women's side, but how can you downplay the 100 back final as a race? The event produced 4 times within the top 7 in the world this season (#1, #4, #5, #7), including a world record and a world junior record.

    • 200 back - yet another great backstroke race that was a nailbiter throughout and came down to a tie for the title and the #3 time in the world this season

MEN'S BREAKOUT PERFORMER - Honorable Mention:
    • Andrew Seliskar - broke through in the most unexpected of events, winning the 200 free with a gutsy 3rd 50 that left a field of more specialized freestylers in the wake of the IM/multi-stroke threat. It could be a sign of things to come for Seliskar, once seen as a candidate to be the next great versatile American after Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.

TEAM OF THE MEET - CALIFORNIA AQUATICS

The Cal men, in particular, were on fire, putting six men (Nathan Adrian, Andrew Seliskar, Josh Prenot, Ryan Murphy, Jacob Pebley and Sean Grieshop) onto the Pan Pacs team. Adrian, Seliskar, Prenot, Murphy and Pebley are all in line for 2019 Worlds spots, while Cal Aquatics also put five more (Trenton Julian, Nick Norman, Grieshop, Bryce Mefford and Michael Jensen) in line for the 2019 World University Games team and two more (Daniel Carr and Matthew Josa) in line for the 2019 Pan American Games team.

When you add in the Cal Aquatics women (Katie McLaughlin and Abbey Weitzeil to the Pan Pacs team and likely World Championships team) and the Cal Aquatics roster had by far the most high-profile meet of any club in attendance.

As the US Pan Pacs team gather for training camp at Soka University in Aliso Viejo (not far from Mission Viejo & Dana Point in SoCal), prior to their 13 hour flight to Tokyo on Saturday (National teams from Oz, Canada & several other countries are already in Japan, so will have a massive headstart on acclimatising to the time zone & environment):

...here's another highlights reel of 2018 US Nationals, courtesy of SWM (EDITS=> took the liberty of inserting some Bears photos from other sources :p):

    ------

Key Highlights You Don't Want to Miss from 2018 Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships

    An Exceptionally Fast Meet

World, American, U.S. Open and Junior records were obliterated across the board; the most notable of these coming from Kathleen Baker and Hali Flickinger. California's Baker solidified her status as world's top 100 backstroker with a mind-blowing 58.00 world record.

Ryan Murphy, Michael Andrew, Reagan Smith and Claire Tuggle also put up commendable performances.

    Breakthrough Performances

California's Andrew Seliskar stunned the crowd in the 200 free, dropping his lifetime best from 1:48.35 to 1:45.70 to secure a first place finish.

    Successful Comebacks

After a disappointing 2017 NCAAs, California's Katie McLaughlin and Abbey Weitzeil cemented their comebacks in the 100 fly and 100 free, respectively. McLaughlin posted a lifetime best of 57.71 to touch second, while Weitzeil recorded her first sub-54 swim since 2016 Olympic Trials.

    ------

COMPETITOR COACH OF THE MONTH: DAVE DURDEN, CALIFORNIA AQUATICS

California Aquatics brought 23 men to the U.S. National Championships. And coach Dave Durden helped 18 of them earn finals swims and 13 Cal swimmers make some sort of major international travel team for Team USA.

Durden's crew had the finest showing of any club at Nationals and they'll get plenty more opportunities to step up over the next two summers.

    ------

Gold Medalists Named Pan Pacific Championships Team Captains

Ahead of this month's Pan Pacific Championships, veteran USA Swimming National Team members Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash./California Aquatics), Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics), Allison Schmitt (Canton, Mich./Pitchfork Aquatics) and Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics) were voted team captains by the 57 athletes slated to compete in Tokyo.

Adrian and Grevers also served as men's co-captains for last summer's FINA World Championships, while Adrian also was selected a co-captain for the 2016 Olympic Games. Schmitt also was a co-captain for the women's squad in Rio de Janeiro.

The pool competition for the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships is slated for Aug. 9-12 with the 10-kilometer open water race set for Aug. 14.

-Calvin David will swim the 1500 tonight as part of the fastest heat
-Anna Kalandadze and Sarah Dimeco swim the 800 this afternoon
-Jason Louser is seeded 6th for tonight's 100 breast A final
-Chloe Clark and Emma Davidson placed 86th and 106th in the 100 breast prelims

Relatively quiet morning, and some of our recruits (e.g. Kaitlyn as mentioned by tedbear), had solid showings.

DAY 1- Here are what our Bears/recruits are swimming:

    W 200m Fly
    Bears: Klinker, Fiorilli, McL

Klinker hit a best time, C final

Rachel is the 200m Fly champion @ 2018 NCSA Champs tonight at the IUPUI in Indianapolis, by almost a sec and a half over runner-up Madison Kolessar in the A final!

Klink's winning time of 2:13.83 quite a bit slower than the stellar 2:12.49 lifetime best that our 2019 Baby Bear had busted out during prelims at US Nationals last week.

Still, a laudable effort considering that Rachel was taking on the extremely challenging 200m Free/200m Fly double in the same session (in the spirit of 'Bug' aka Katie McL lol), where she had placed 6th in the B final with a 2:05.66.

U.S. Roster Set for 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships

Cal will be well represented by 2019 Baby Bear Isabel Ivey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Forty of the United States' top up-and-coming swimmers will represent the Team USA at this month's 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, set for Aug. 23-27 in Fiji.

"Over the last two Olympic quads we have seen multiple future Olympians excel at Junior Pan Pacs, and I'm thrilled to see many new faces on this roster. More than two-thirds of this year's team will be competing internationally for the first time, and I look forward to seeing how the group comes together in Fiji," said Mitch Dalton, USA Swimming National Junior Team Director.

The head coaches for the team are Allison Beebe of Santa Clara Swim Club and Dan Flack of Baylor Swim Club, and 2016 Olympic medalists Maya DiRado and David Plummer will serve as National Team athlete reps on the trip.

Featuring the top junior swimmers from the U.S., Canada, Australia and Japan, the Junior Pan Pacific Championships have consistently proven to be a springboard for international success.

Current backstroke world record-holders Kathleen Baker and Ryan Murphy also are past participants at the meet.

A complete roster is linked below.

Not certain if these posts on Rachel's NCSA performances belong more to the 2019 Women's Recruiting thread or what lol...

Anyway, our 2019 Baby Bear laid down a lifetime best of 4:54.17 in the 400m IM this evening, claiming runner-up in the B final. Klink's prev PB = 5:00.57 from last summer. Her time tonight was actually faster than all the A finalists other than the top 2!

    • UPDATE => * Friday finals *

Rachel took second in the 100m Fly A final with a 1:00.12, behind Victoria Huske's 59.35 PB (Tori is ranked #4 in the recruits class of 2021). Klinker has only swum faster than tonight at US Nationals last week, achieving a personal record of 59.98 back then.

5 Things to Watch at the Pan Pacific Championships

    2. Kathleen Baker and the women's 100-meter backstroke.

Baker was the talk of the town last month with a world record in the 100-meter backstroke. Baker nearly became the first-ever woman under :58 seconds. Could she break through that time barrier at this week's Pan Pacs? She should have a few opportunities to do so, including the medley relay. She'll have stellar international competition to push her. It would be quite a feat to break into the :57-second territory, but Baker is only one one-hundredth of a second away. She could do it this week.

Fastest 2 times from Nationals & Pan Pacs advance to the 2019 World Championships.

Cheers for all the smashing work compiling these Pan Pacs links, esp the list of Bears competing in Tokyo!

Just to add a wee bit to all of that, I believe B final times do count towards qualification for 2019 Worlds (which also impacts the 2019 WUG & Pam Am selections), but not prelims or relay leadoff times.

Okay, rankings as of prelims (though prelims swims don't count for Worlds):
    1. Ledecky - 1:54.60 (2018 Nationals)
    2. Schmitt - 1:55.82 (2018 Nationals)
    3. G. Deloof - 1:56.55 (2018 Nationals)
    4. L. Smith - 1:56.81 (2018 Pan Pacs)
    5. Katie McL - 1:56.88 (2018 Pan Pacs)
    6. Simone Manuel - 1:57.01 (2018 Nationals)

Only Ledecky, Schmitt, Smith, and McL will get to swim in finals, so as long as McL swims faster than a 1:57, she's good to make the team. Otherwise, Margalis gets in w/ her 1:57.32 from Nationals. Go Katie!!!!

Unfortunately there is a max limit of 3 swimmers per country in finals (2 in the A, 1 in the B), so Bug just 0.07 sec shy of 3rd USA swimmer Leah Smith and won't get a 2nd swim tonight in this event.

Katie McL with a 1:56.8 to qualify 4th out of Americans (behind Ledecky, Schmitt, L. Smith). Don't quite know what G. Deloof (placed 3rd at Nattys) went, so it might be a coin toss between them, unless McL pops a fast one tonight!
Unfortunately there is a max limit of 3 swimmers per country in finals (2 in the A, 1 in the B), so Bug just 0.07 sec shy of 3rd USA swimmer Leah Smith and won't get a 2nd swim tonight in this event.

On the bright side, McL did achieve a lifetime best here, her prev PB being 1:57.55 from 2015! Will definitely be considered for the 4x200m Free relay in this meet too! Go Bug!

Wait, I thought it was two swimmers per final?? Let's see if they'll throw her on the free relay anyways.

On the SS article, it says: "Allison Schmitt did what was necessary to get into the A-final with the 2nd fastest time in 1:56.36, eding out Leah Smith (1:56.81) who will be bumped to the B-final. She'll be joined there by Katie McLaughlin who had a good swim for 5th overall in 1:56.88."

Sorry looks like bearz012 was right all along, and my assumption was (very happily ) inaccurate - according to SS' BRADEN KEITH: "Countries that put 2 swimmers in the A final can also have 2 swimmers in the B final"...yay Katie's in the B final after all!!!!

Yeah! Another chance for Katie to make Worlds...seems to be a new rule, I guess?

Andrew Seliskar is the American to beat in this event. After pulling off an upset to win U.S. Nationals, Seliskar topped prelims as the only man to break 1:46, but Olympian and Worlds medalist Townley Haas is looming. They'll have to be on top of it to secure spots for Worlds, with Blake Pieroni and Zach Apple competing in the B final. Pieroni has had a very strong year as the first man to break 1:30 in the yards version of this event, while Apple had a breakout swim this morning, breaking 1:48 for the first time.

    - Katie's sprinting continues to improve, lowering her recent best of 54.24 @ Nationals to a 54.14. 5th fastest American this morning, 10th overall time-wise, does get shut out of finals by a mere 0.05 sec, due to the 2-swimmers-per-country-per-final rules here.

Could however get the nod by the coaches for the 4x200m Free final tonight tho, I reckon...

    - Seli's prev best = 51.14, in an event that he hasn't seriously competed in since 2015. Fun watching him smoke the entire field from Lane 1 in that first heat

    - Thleen's 58.41 is her 2nd fastest swim ever (topped only by her 58.00 WR @ US Nationals), breaking Emily Seebohm (AUS)'s old Pan Pac record of 58.84 from 2014.

    - Murph's 52.19 had also annihilated Matt Grevers' 2014 Pan Pacs record of 52.91. Ryan has only gone faster than that on 2 occasions, both @ Rio, his lifetime best being his 51.85 WR from the medley relay leadoff leg @ the 2016 Olympics.
