The senior ceremony was nice and sunny, but now it's cold and the clouds are getting darker. Let's do this Bears!

Bears win the 200 medley relay. We all knew this, but Abbey is lights out! Interesting notes, Maddie was running with the A group instead of Katie, and Izzy out split Amy in the back.

Izzy looked good in the back leg. Abbey effortlessly took down Ruck in the free leg.

Oski hates the 1000 Free, so he made it hail!

Gutty swim by McL in the 200 Free. Was trailing Forde at 175, but ran her down for the win. Izzy almost took out Forde too.

Hanging in, but Jasmine Mau looks miserable.

Billy builds a wall on the Northern border and makes Canada pay for it by beating Ruck in the 100 Back.

Thank you beary much to BD & tedbear for the wonderfully colourful yet very informative on-the-scene reporting, tsunami and all lol!

Looks like Bears had put in a valiant effort against a formidable LSJU squad who can boast unparalleled depth top to bottom - a commendable performance overall that may have been somehow obscured by the lopsided scoring, but the seniors can hold their heads up with shining pride for all that they had accomplished in their last dual competition in the blue & gold, and in the past 4 years in both the pool & in the classroom...

Cal had actually won 6 swimming events (including one of the 2 relays which is always an area of pride for this programme) v. the Furdettes' tally of 8.

But ultimately the Bears' very evident lack of firepower in support of our handful of top end studs enabled the admirably deep Cardinal squad with their cadre of elite stars to get away with running up the scoring massively, opening the floodgates by virtue of their 1-2-3-4 sweeps in 4 events (200 Fly, 500 Free, 200 Breast, 3m Diving), 1-2-3 finishes in 3 races (1000 Free, 200 IM, 1m Diving), not to mention their pair of 1-2 winners (100 Breast, 200 Back)! ~ouch~

BERKELEY - In its final home dual-meet of the season, Cal picked up six victories, including a pool record in the 100 free from Abbey Weitzeil, but the Golden Bears fell to Stanford, 192-107, Saturday on a raining afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

LONGSEEKER:
"Well, anyone who follows college swimming recruiting knows that Stanford consistently reloads each year with almost all their swimmers in the top 10 to 20 nationally. They'll easily win the PAC12 Championships at the end of this month and I cannot think of a team that will beat them. BTW, with the rain in Berkeley,I had fun like others to move to a large tent area with Cal and Stanford fans and found my self encircled by the Cal Men's team and saw Reece Whitely, Trent Julian, Hugo Gonzales and others and also said hello to Grieshop. Then the sun came out and everyone bolted back to the bleachers. The Cal men welcome Stanford to Berkeley next Saturday and it should be a great meet."

TEA REX:
"Random impressions:
Overall really fast, especially for swimming in the rain. As most February duel meets, times were all over the place, but Stanford was much more consistent.
Cal had their bright spots, but distance and breast were brutal. Plus, a 1:54 IMer (Darcel), a 51 backstroker (Blovad), and a 1:43 freestyler (Neumann) were non-factors.
Questions I have about conference/NCAA lineups:
Cassidy Bayer usually a one-trick-pony flyer was just 1:59, but almost better in the 500 (4:53). MAYBE she can sneak into a 500 B final, but should be honing in on her meat and potatoes stroke at this time.
Izzy Ivey probably just beat up for her first 2 months in college, but her duel meet focus has been 200 free, 100 fly/back, which doesn't work with the schedule."

TAA:
"I can't see Cal challenging them (Stanford) after this meet. But I see a lot of question marks. They will probably still win but I could see them being challenged this year if they are off. Michigan cal or Texas. Really Baker should have waited to go pro, the meet would have been pretty close with her"

SWIMGEEK:
"Baker just cracked a WR It was a pretty smart time for her to go pro. Not good for her team, granted."

SUPERFAN:
"Weitzeil has been throwing down some crazy anchors on their medley."

Senior ceremony was very well done., Team made a tunnel for the graduating seniors and their families. In addition to being great swimmers, all five are terrific representatives of our beloved University. Their academic accomplishments alone were inspiring.

Poor Jaz Mau got lured back from the Islands and was filming the whole ceremony right before the Polar Vortex hit. Not just rain, but a cold rain.

First time I've been to an event at Spieker since the viewing amnenities have been upgraded. While it's frustrating that Legends' fan experience is so bare bones, Spieker's upgrades were much needed and have significantly improved the experience. The bleachers are much nicer. You can actually read the scoreboard easily now and the sound system has been upgraded.

The high end core of the team (Abbey, McL, Billy, Izzy) is extremely strong and versatile. Robin, Maddy, Keeks, Darcel, Ema, and Alicia are also very good. Add Thleen to that group and Teri would have another credible NCAA championship team. Sadly it's impossible to replace Thleen's points. Teri's left with a top three NCAA team and a top five dual meet team.

Izzy's as good as advertised and will be even better next season with a season and a half of training at Cal under her belt. She's not very tall, but she competetes really hard.

Cassidy is similarly sized and incredibly tough. She swims the grueling thankless races (500 Free, 200 Fly) that Eastin and Szekely do for LSJU. Cassidy was wearing a stylish Bear hat during intros and clearly loves being at Cal. BFFs Maddy and Keeks each wore a single yellow glove Jacko style.

LSJU is a talented and very deep team across all strokes and diving. Eastin is the latest slam dunk superstar. Forde, Drabot, Byrnes, and AS are all very solid. Pitzer, Ruck, and Raab are really coming on. Curious to see who emerges as the alpha ala Manuel, Ledecky, Neal, Eastin, Hu, or Howe from the younger swimmers on the team.

Despite their scandalous Robber Baron past and Taco Bell roots, Eastin, Brynes, Kim Williams, and Grace Zhao are very likable just like DiRado, Lee, and Manuel.

Was a pleasure and joy to watch Billy, McL, and Jenna develop and grow during their Cal careers. The three amigas are extremeley close and it was fitting they all ended up as Tri-Captains as seniors.

McL and Billy used to playfully and sarcastically yell at Jenna during meets and warm ups, but the whole team yelled loudest when Jenna was introduced and during each of her races yesterday. Truly a beloved Golden Bear.

As noted, Billy's exemplary in and out of the pool. Great swimmer, but also always really eloquent and sincere.

McL was the first Dream Teamer to commit and she's been both the emotional heart and soul and undisputed leader ever since. Following the emotional 400 Free Relay, Teri talked to the.team for a long time. Abbey and Billy were both physically exhausted after swimming heroic relay legs and making up significant ground. McL dabbed her eyes several times as she realized she''d just swum her final race as a Bear in Berkeley. Despite all the emotions, she calmly recovered her poise and led her team in cheers and to congratulate their rivals. No question that every woman on that team would follow McL anywhere.

As noted in the SS writeup below, Amy's entered in 4 events on the 2019 Pac-12s psych sheet. Probably won't be attempting the tough double on the last day as she'll also be an essential component of the 400 FR at the end of the session, so likely to drop either the 200 Back or 100 Free...

Here are several others who are presently listed on more than 3 events, along with their seeding:

Billy
Day 2: 50 Free (#7)
Day 3: 100 Back (#4)
Day 4: 200 Back (#7), 100 Free (#12)

Katie
Day 3: 100 Fly (#2), 200 Free (#5)
Day 4: 100 Free (#3), 200 Fly (#4)

Sarah
Day 2: 200 IM (#5)
Day 3: 400 IM (#4)
Day 4: 200 Breast (#21), 200 Fly (#13)

Izzy
Day 2: 200 IM (#37)
Day 3: 100 Fly (#10), 200 Free (#9), 100 Back (#8)
Day 4: 100 Free (#14)

Cass
Day 2: 500 Free(#25)
Day 3: 100 Fly (#30), 200 Free (#41)
Day 4: 200 Fly (#11)

Elise
Day 2: 50 Free (#30)
Day 3: 100 Fly (#15)
Day 4: 100 Free (#22), 200 Fly (#30)

Can't really see Izzy tackling that close-to-impossible treble on Day 3 (though she did @ Jr Winter Nats lol - so, you never know!).

Izz hasn't really contested the 200 IM either in the blue & gold, hence her "lowly" 37th seeding there.

Our talented frosh is in a bit of a difficult spot when it comes to NCAA invites, since she hasn't had the opportunity to race in rested, shaved or suited mode as a Bear, so won't have the luxury of a rested qualifying time from an earlier mid-szn invite, i.e. can't really confidently swim thru conference with no rest... unlike studs such as Abbey, McL etc. who can afford to do so, thus saving their best for NCAAs.

Will take a bit of juggling with a new recruit adapting to the system with whom there are undoubtedly a number of unknowns re her taper cycle & more - I'm thinking Teri will give Ivey a bit of rest as her natural talent will perhaps be enough here to shoot for close to an 'A' cut somewhere, and at the very least secure relatively favourable seeding times for her likely event schedule.

Definitely no real taper of any sort for our latest Baby Bear this week, in order not sabotage her potential for some significant time drops when March rolls around.

Footnote: Was absolutely indignant that SS had initially listed McL as "Stanford" ~wth...smh~ Thankfully they have come to realise the error of their ways and have atoned accordingly for their most grievous error...

ELLA EASTIN WILL SWIM 500 FREE AT 2019 PAC-12S (PSYCH SHEETS)

The 2019 Pac-12 Championships begin on Wednesday in Federal Way, Washington, and the two-time defending Pac-12 (and NCAA) Champions from Stanford will be heavily favored to win yet again. According to the Swimulator, they enter the meet with a 240.5 point scoring advantage (in swimming events only) over their chief rivals Cal, with USC another 44 points behind the Golden Bears.

VIEW THE PSYCH SHEETS HERE

The Pac-12 has released their psych sheets, which unlike most conference psych sheets are much closer to having each athlete in just her 3 allotted individual events. There are a few exceptions (Amy Bilquist is one), but for the most part, we know exactly what each swimmer will race, at least individually, this week.
  • Amy Bilquist has 4 entries in the meet: the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back, and 200 back. In spite of her reputation as a sprinter, Bilquist has swum the 200 back instead of the 100 free as her day 3 event in all 3 seasons of her career to date.

2019 PAC-12 WOMEN'S CHAMPS FAN GUIDE: NEW-LOOK STANFORD LEADS THE WAY

After two consecutive PAC-12 titles, the Stanford women are poised for another, but with a vastly different squad than we're used to. The new Stanford Cardinal still has plenty of its usual weapons. Meanwhile, Canadian record holder Taylor Ruck leads the new wave of talent as part of an immensely stacked freshman class. There's a bit of everything in this class.

California and USC are heavily favored to bring in the 2nd and 3rd-best team performances this year.

Cal has flaunted the best sprint core of the conference, headed by Olympian Abbey Weitzeil and perennial powers Amy Bilquist and Katie McLaughlin. Three of the fastest sprinters in the country will make their relays incredibly dangerous, and even the hyped-up Stanford class may have trouble taking them down this post-season in the sprint free races. Meanwhile, breaststroke and distance free continue to be weaker points on the Bears' roster, but they still have a ton of experience to bring to the Pac 12 Champs. Sarah Darcel, Robin Neumann, and Maddie Murphy build out this roster, and while we haven't seen breaststroker Ali Harrison at the level she was last year when she broke a minute in the 100 breast, freshman Ema Rajic has been sturdy as the go-to dual meet breaststroker.

Cal won't be able to replace the incomparable Kathleen Baker, but they did have a high-impact mid-year addition in Isabel Ivey, who graduated high school a semester early. Like Baker was in high school, Ivey is incredibly fast across seemingly any and every event. She's known best as a 100-200 freestyler, and could be that 4th relay leg that puts Cal into untouchable territory in the free relays. Individually, who really knows what events she'll race, as her best times put her in the 2018-19 Pac-12 top 8 in the 50/100/200 free, 100 back, 100 fly, and 200/400 IM (and not far off from top 8s in both breaststrokes and the 200 fly).

STARS

Cal - Katie McLaughlin (junior butterflier/freestyler), Abbey Weitzeil (junior sprinter), Robin Neumann (sophomore mid-distance freestyler), Sarah Darcel (sophomore IMer/butterflier), Isabel Ivey (freshman everything), Amy Bilquist (senior freestyler/backstroker).

As we said earlier, this is a very powerful sprint team, but nearly all of their sprinters can extend to the 200 for what should be another fantastic 800 free relay. Backstroke is going to be another strong point for this roster, and Ivey will likely join a big IM group.

SHOWDOWNS

500 FREESTYLE

Eastin is swimming this event and Drabot and Forde are not, so the total Stanford swimmers you have besides Eastin are #4 Byrnes, #5 Pitzer, #8 Morgan Tankersley, #10 Leah Stevens, #12 Erin Voss, #18 Katie Glavinovich, and #19 Hannah Kukurugya.

So, there are what feels like a million Cardinal swimmers here, plus the conference-leading Wildcats, while Neumann is the top swimmer from Cal. If anyone is going to crash the party, it'll be Cierra Runge.

100 BACK

Oddly enough, Louise Hansson (51.43) and Ella Eastin (51.64) lead the conference.

Ruck has been 51.70 this season, just ahead of Cal's Keaton Blovad (51.95) and Amy Bilquist (52.16). Bilquist's 50.50 best from the 2016 Pac-12 Champs is the fastest time of the field, but she was hampered by injury which kept her out of racing for most of the first semester, and it's unclear if she'll get to her bests at Pac-12s.

Cal's Izzy Ivey is over-entered, but could be a dark horse in this event if she goes with it.

200 FLY

Hansson leads the conference this season at 1:51.52, just ahead of Eastin (1:52.07) and Wright (1:52.48). Drabot has been 1:53.38, followed by McLaughlin(1:54.63) and Trojan Caitlin Tycz (1:54.89).

McLaughlin dropped down to a 1:52.64 at the 2018 NCAA Champs, and she's been as fast as 1:55.4 in dual meets.

A sleeper here is Cassidy Bayer of Cal, who is still trying to get back to her best before injury plagued the end of her high school career. The freshman had a great meet in Cal's dual with USC, where she produced a 1:57.68 200 fly that nearly eclipsed her mid-season time of 1:57.29.

400 IM

Eastin is the greatest-ever in this event in yards, but Forde is someone who continues to chase her teammates in this event. She recently unearthed a massive 4:04.46 in a dual meet, and it feels like she is going to have a fantastic post-season.

Allie Szekely has been 4:07.98 this year, and will be looking to make this a 1-2-3 Stanford sweep. She'll have to handle Cal's Sarah Darcel, though. Last year, Ledecky, Eastin, and Forde went 1-2-3, with Darcel 3rd (4:03.00) and Szekely 4th (4:06.63).

400 FREE RELAY

This relay has the potential to be an absolute barn burner. Before we call it for Stanford, let's take it back a second and consider what Cal and USC are bringing to the table.

Cal has been the fastest this year at 3:11.14, with USC 2nd (3:11.96) and Stanford 3rd (3:12.08). Cal did this with McLaughlin, Weitzeil, Blovad, and Neumann. They got a 47.4 from McLaughlin and a 46.6 anchor from Weitzeil, with Blovad 48.7 leading off and Neumann 48.2 on the 2nd leg.

For the Trojans, Hansson led off in 47.8, followed by a 47.6 from Wade and 48-lows from Vose and Ciesla.

Stanford, meanwhile, had a 48.7 lead-off from Fackenthal, followed by a 48-low from Eastin, a 48-mid from Ashley Volpenhein, and then a monstrous 46.2 anchor from Ruck.

There will be changes going into Pac-12s.

Most likely, Bilquist and Ivey will move in for Blovad and Neumann. That means Cal will have (at the least) two 47's and two 46's. If Weitzeil leads off, they could end up having four 46's, which would be sub-3:08 (the NCAA record is Stanford's 2017 relay, a 3:07.61).

USC will probably have the same four, although a healthy Caldwell is going to make them more dangerous (she was 47-low anchoring NC State's 400 free relay at 2017 NCAAs).

Stanford may switch in Nordmann for Volpenhein, and we know that Eastin has split 47 in the past.

Cal definitely has the edge here, and their talent is more proven, with Ivey being the big wildcard.

By the fourth day of the meet, though, we'll know who's on and who's not, and it'll be clearer who is favored for this relay.

SELECTIONS

When consulting the almighty Swimulator, Stanford is again in a tier of its own. This team is too deep not to win this conference, and while many of their top swimmers are new faces, that doesn't mean they won't crash the A finals with as many as 5-6 swimmers in the top 8 in some events (pretty much half their roster is extremely talented in the 500 free, for example).

Diving isn't included in the Swimulator, but the race for 2nd may be tighter than one would expect. We don't have any mid-season times from January Cal addition Ivey, who has potential to be a triple A-finalist and will boost the relays.

Plus, without Bilquist having had a big mid-season meet due to her injury last semester, the Swimulator admittedly undervalues the Bears. Bilquist has looked back to full strength, though, and she beat Ruck head-to-head in the 100 back in their dual with Stanford.

Cal returns 1-meter A finalist Phoebe LaMay last year, and USC has platform A-finalists Naomi Gowlett and Maddie Witt, but there's no huge edge for either team here, so Cal looks like a good bet for 2nd.

Should USC's Courtney Caldwell and mid-year additions Jemma Schlict and Laticia Transom show up in a big way, things could get very interesting.

After today last chance result, 12 bears including Bayer (ranked 34th) should get invite, and all have the potential to score at ncaa.

Otoh, Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou has a little less chance although she's still within range.
She's ranked 44th, and after removing Hansson, Brown, Eastin, & Sheridan, she'd be 40th.

The ranking for Harrison (32nd) and Bayer (34th) is listed after all last chance meets, so that's 12 bears.

Krivokapic-Zhou's ranking (44th) is also listed after all meets. Once they publish the coaches' pre-selection lists on 100 Back, we'll know if we'll get the 13th bear.

PROJECTING THE CUTLINE 2019 NCAA WOMEN'S D1 CHAMPIONSHIPS

SwimSwam resident mathematician Andrew Mering has run the numbers, and he projects that the cut line will fall in the middle of the 38th-ranked line (based on swimmers for whom that is their highest seed).
This is a spot-and-a-half lower than last year, where the invite line fell between the 36 and 37 line on the selection procedures.

The official NCAA Championship cut-line will be out on Wednesday, and it's possible for there to be small changes on the pre-selection list between now and then that could shift this line, though it wouldn't dramatically move it.

2019 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Psych Sheets Set: Line at 37, 38

The psych sheets for the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships have been finalized with the line set at 37 and 38.

The meet will be held two weeks from today at the University of Texas.

Stanford is the two-time defending champion but will have its hands full with arch rival Cal this year.

Crikey, hadn't expected the projected scoring to be so close for Bears v. Trees - not that I'm complaining one tiny bit, mind you lol!

On a sobering & realistic note, diving hasn't been factored in here - Furdettes hold a substantial advantage there as Cal isn't expected to score in that dept (and the Horns will make a big move there), LSJU seemed to have been swimming less rested perhaps than most other teams @ Pac-12s, Bears were on a roll esp in the relays at this year's Conference Champs so may be a bit of a challenge to match or exceed some of the lifetime bests achieved over the weekend in a few weeks' time...we won 4 out of 5 relays @ 2018 Pac-12s, but none @ 2018 NCAAs even though Cal did go a bit faster in some of those relays, as the Cardinal really stepped up their game at the Big Dance last year, dropping a lot of time...

--------

SCORING OUT THE WOMEN'S NCAA DIVISION I PRE-SELECTION PSYCH SHEET

While no cut lines have been made official, we can still score out the psych sheet pretty reliably the cut line usually falls somewhere in the 30s, meaning the top 16 seeds should be unaffected. Our resident numbers expert Andrew Mering has already tallied up the points, showing what could be a closer NCAA meet than previously projected.

These numbers don't include diving, which includes three events at the NCAA Championship. As always, some athletes took a full rest for the conference round, while others may have saved rest and could have more time to drop. And relays seem somewhat likely to shuffle around as teams try new athlete combinations at NCAAs compared to what they used at the conference level.

VIEW THE PSYCH SHEETS THEMSELVES HERE

PROJECTED RANK | TEAM | PSYCH SHEET SWIM POINTS | 2018 DIVE POINTS FROM UNDERCLASSMEN
1 | Stanford | 374 | 0
2 | California | 371 | 0
3 | Michigan | 295 | 7
4 | Tennessee | 261 | 12
5 | NC State | 242 | 0
6 | Auburn | 191 | 0
7 | Indiana | 180 | 35
8 | Southern Cali | 179 | 0
9 | Texas | 161 | 51
10 | Louisville | 160 | 0
11 | Texas A&M | 152 | 0
12 | Virginia | 148 | 0
13 | Kentucky | 98 | 0
14 | Georgia | 92 | 0
15 | Wisconsin | 90 | 0
16 | Florida | 82 | 8
17 | Missouri | 70 | 0
18 | Minnesota | 68 | 47
19 | Arizona St | 55 | 14
20 | South Carolina | 39 | 0

The projections show just three points separating two-time defending champs Stanford from Pac-12 rivals Cal.

Stanford, though, should get a boost from some athletes who swam off events at Pac-12s and are now under-seeded. Ella Eastin is a good example: she swam 500 free, 400 IM and 200 back at Pac-12s, but will only include one of those events in her NCAA entries. (She's entered in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 fly). If Eastin wins all three like she did last year, she'll move up 13 points from seed.

Ali - 100 Breast (#31), 200 Breast (#94)
Cassidy - 500 Free (#87), 200 Fly (#31)

* = double

Not too many surprises really. Quick observations:

- Izzy taking on the 100 Back instead of the 200 Free on Day 3 makes sense from a scoring chances perspective:
1) That #58 seeded 53.07 sec entry in the 100 Back is an unsuited, unrested time. Has a 51.73 PB from Nov 2018, which would rank her #16 on that pre-selection sheet (i.e. potential scorer)
2) Her sprint back has looked much sharper than her 200 Free (for example, Ivey did go faster than Billy leading off the 200 MR @ the dual v. Trees)
3) Extremely competitive field in the 200 Free this year - Top 16 entries are all 1:43 swimmers! Izz has gone a studly 1:43.64 before, but back in 2016. In spite of her three career 1:43 swims, Isabel hasn't dipped below 1:44 since 2017...
4) More time to rest in between events, as the 100 Back's the last individual whilst the 200 Free immediately follows the 100 Fly.

- Bug's #12 seed is undervalued, since she was DQ'ed in this event @ Pac-12s.

- Madds, Alicia & Ema aren't seeded as individual scorers, but they def are quite capable of helping with the team scoring - Madds in the 50 Free (& 100 Fly if she can get back to her frosh form), Alicia in the 200 IM, and Ema in the 100 Breast if she can continue to get faster (may be asking a bit much after Rajic's massive drop @ Pac-12s, reckon her greater value will be contributing to the medley relays).

- Ali (100 Breast) & Cass (200 Fly) do have an outside shot at making the B final. At any rate, just fab to see them step up from their trials & tribulations of a relatively rough season to join the team in Austin this March!

As always thank you for all of your pencil pushing. Hoping Phoebe makes it in diving for the 4th year in the row though any scoring from her or any other divers will be difficult as she has yet to score (I believe).

Looks like Taylor Ruck is entered in the 200 free as others have pointed out.

Can someone explain the order of the alternates list determined? Also, anyone remembers how many people from the alternate list last year actually got into the meet? I'm sure Sophie and other non-qualifiers will be brought to the meet anyway for support but in Sophie case hoping she still have an outside opportunity to be a participant.

I believe that Sophie's the 4th alternate for the 2019 NCAA invite list, judging from the order of the quoted list above?

As for how that order is determined, seems to be a fairly convoluted process which frankly still eludes my limited comprehension haha - the Swimswam article did make a valiant attempt at explaining things lol.

Seem to recall that the top 2 alternates ended up earning invites, since Sophie ended up being the 2nd alternate for 2018 NCAAs?

That would be such a sweet gesture on Teri's part if it was to happen - would be along the lines of what had happened with the Furdettes' Katie Glavinovich (who had actually earned an invite but was superseded from participation in the competition by several of their higher-scoring divers).

However, may not be a likely scenario since Cal W Swim/Dive would have to pay for Sophie's flight, hotel & all expenses if she isn't invited. Now granted, blueshirt froski Chloe Clark did get to experience Pac-12s and cheer her teammates on last week, but that may be a slightly different situation?

Meehan was generous indeed in flying the whole of the Trees squad to 2018 NCAAs - though I would suspect the relatively deep pockets of the Furd boosters etc may have been a contributing factor (just an unsubstantiated hypothesis lol)...

SCORING OUT THE WOMEN'S NCAA DIVISION I PRE-SELECTION PSYCH SHEET

PROJECTED RANK | TEAM | PSYCH SHEET SWIM POINTS | 2018 DIVE POINTS FROM UNDERCLASSMEN
1 | Stanford | 374 | 0
2 | California | 371 | 0
3 | Michigan | 295 | 7
4 | Tennessee | 261 | 12
5 | NC State | 242 | 0
6 | Auburn | 191 | 0
7 | Indiana | 180 | 35
8 | Southern Cali | 179 | 0
9 | Texas | 161 | 51
10 | Louisville | 160 | 0

The projections show just three points separating two-time defending champs Stanford from Pac-12 rivals Cal.

Stanford, though, should get a boost from some athletes who swam off events at Pac-12s and are now under-seeded. Ella Eastin is a good example: she swam 500 free, 400 IM and 200 back at Pac-12s, but will only include one of those events in her NCAA entries. (She's entered in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 fly). If Eastin wins all three like she did last year, she'll move up 13 points from seed.

Not to get our hopes or expectations set to unrealistic heights lol (I'd be more comfy if Bears remain in their alloted role as the massive underdogs that they have been all season long :p), but last year Swimswam projected Stanford to win 2018 NCAAs with 527.5 pts v. Cal's predicted 366.5 pts (swimming only), which was quite spot on (even with the Trees over-performing relative to their Pac-12s results by quite a bit), as the actual final standings which included the diving was Furd's 593 total pts v. Bears' 373...

Caveat is the Cardinal has lots of room to move up in the scoring this March v. Cal who had valiantly raced their hearts out beyond most expectations last week (LSJU studs such as Eastin & others will be swimming their best events @ the Big Dance which they didn't @ Conference, reports of many of the Trees not having rested for Pac-12s, their relay lineups will prob. look quite different, and just from historical trends, etc).

Not to be overlooked in our intense pre-occupation w/the Bay Area schools arch-rivalry haha are the very real & dangerous threats posed by Michigan, Texas, Tenn, NCSU and more - Horns are massively under-rated in these projections here partly cos they didn't have to swim fast at their Big 12 champs, there being no serious competition to their conference title repeat(s)...

Here's a look back at what happened @ 2018 NCAAs, along with the pre-meet projected results using the pre-selection psych sheets at around the same period last year...:

AN AMERICAN RECORD FOR KATHLEEN BAKER

With its runner-up finish, Cal has placed among the top 3 at the NCAA meet 10 years in a row.

As a team, the Bears placed second at the national meet for the second consecutive year and ranked among the top 3 for the 10th year in a row the longest current streak in the country. Stanford won the meet with 593 points, while Cal had 373 points seven more than the Bears scored last year. Texas A&M was third with 299 point and Michigan fourth with 267.

The Bears closed out the competition by breaking their fifth school record of the meet, lowering their mark by almost a full second in the 400 free relay by finishing second to Stanford in 3:08.05. Bilquist led off and was followed by Weitzeil, Baker and McLaughlin.

"The stat of being in the top 3 that last 10 years is something personally I'm incredibly proud of," McKeever said. "I'm really proud of our national titles, obviously, but the consistency of a program for a decade staying in the top 3 any team or individual athlete that can do that really says a lot. It's about a group of women that have come in and bought into the program and bought into a philosophy and can continue to elevate and challenge and support each other day in and day out. It's a streak we intend to keep going."

12 Swimmers, 5 Relays Earn NCAA Berths

Cal To Be Well Represented At National Championships March 20-23

BERKELEY - Twelve Golden Bear swimmers plus all five relays have earned invitations to the NCAA Championships, the NCAA announced Wednesday.

The list of Cal swimmers who will compete at the national meet in Austin, Texas, March 20-23 is:
The Bears' group features two seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and four freshmen. According to the NCAA psych sheet, Cal's contingent holds 17 swims that rank among the top 16 in the country, including three swimmers in three different events. Weitzeil leads the nation in the 100 free, while she is second in the 50 free and third in the 200 free. Bilquist is second in the 100 back, fifth in the 100 free and sixth in the 50 free, with McLaughlin fourth in the 100 fly, sixth in the 200 free and 12th in the 200 fly.

The Bears are the top seed in four of the five relays 200, 400 and 800 free relay and 400 medley relay and they are the fifth seed in the 200 medley relay.

Cal is coming off a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships, where they won nine of the 18 swimming events. In addition to sweeping all of the relays, Weitzeil captured the 50, 100 and 200 free and Bilquist touched first in the 100 back. The Bears' 400 free relay set an NCAA record with its time of 3:07.41, with Weitzeil breaking the Pac-12 record in the 50 free (21.16) and the Pac-12 meet record in the 100 free (46.35).

Qualifying for diving takes place March 11-13 at the NCAA Zone E Championships held in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Cal has placed among the top 3 at the NCAA Championships each of the past 10 years the longest current streak in the country winning national titles four times (2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015).

ESPN will provide live linear coverage for both Friday and Saturday finals on ESPNU, as well as digital coverage on ESPN3 for Wednesday and Thursday evening finals. All sessions not part of ESPN's broadcasts will be streamed live on the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships microsite at texassports.com.

DOLFIN SWIM OF THE WEEK: CAL'S NCAA RECORD 400 FREE RELAY

Billy

The Cal women answered a number of key NCAA questions last week through a record-setting 400 free relay at Pac-12s.

For much of the year, the concern has been senior Amy Bilquist. Is she healthy? What kind of shape is she in? Even if she is healthy by NCAAs, will she be able to handle a full workload over the four-day meet?

Consider that concern answered. Bilquist split 46.30 on that relay That's more than a second faster than she split at NCAAs last year (47.45) and came in what was her 10th swim of the meet. She swam prelims and finals of her three individual events (totaling six swims), plus swam on all three free relays and the 400 medley relay. That 46-low split was the final swim of a busy weekend, implying that she can handle a similar workload at NCAAs in a few weeks.

The relay also featured Cal's other stars performing extremely well. Katie McLaughlin was recruited as a 200 flyer, but she's steadily improved her sprints of late. She split a blazing 46.55 on that relay three tenths faster than she was at NCAAs last year. Meanwhile Abbey Weitzeil was 46.39, right at the level she swam at at NCAAs a year ago.

Kathleen Baker graduated from that relay a year ago, but Robin Neumann was 48.17 leading off. She was actually 47.78 in the individual 100 earlier in the same session, so there's a good chance Cal could even better this time at NCAAs, if all four legs are on.

The four combined to go 3:07.41, taking two tenths off an NCAA record Stanford set in 2017 with some pretty elite names: Simone Manuel, Katie Ledecky, Janet Hu and Lia Neal. That's three Olympians and one of the better NCAA swimmers of the 2017 season.

NCAA Division I Women's Prediction: Can Stanford Be Beat?

Here is a look at the teams that Swimming World predicts to finish in this year's Top 10:

  • 1. STANFORD CARDINAL
Last year: 1st (593 points)
Returning points: 257

  • 2. CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS
Last year: 2nd (373 points)
Returning points: 248.5

It looked as if Cal might be the team to knock off Stanford for the women's NCAA title this yearuntil Olympian and multi-national champion Kathleen Baker decided to forgo her senior year and turn professional.

The good news, though, is that pretty much every other point scorer from last year's team (outside of Baker and Noemie Thomas) returns for Cal this seasonseven in allwhich means Cal will still be a top contender for No. 1.

Olympic sprinter Abbey Weitzeil has been swimming at a higher in-season level than her past two years, which could be huge for the Golden Bears, especially with her anchoring some of the relays.

Meanwhile, Katie McLaughlin had a breakout championship meet in 2018, becoming one of the nation's elite swimmerseven scoring in two individual events just minutes apart!

The key could be Amy Bilquist. The senior has been a consistent scorer throughout her college career. But after scoring in the top eight twice as a freshman, she swam in the consolation final the past two years in most of her events, along with one eighth-place finish. If Bilquist can be a top-eight performer again, it would be a huge point swing for Cal.

Cal's remaining returning scorers include Maddie Murphy, Ali Harrison, Sarah Darcel and Robin Neumann. And Coach Teri McKeever welcomes a strong freshman class, led by butterflyer Cassidy Bayer.

  • 3. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES
Last year: 4th (267 points)
Returning points: 185

  • 4. TEXAS LONGHORNS
Last year: 6th (221.5 points)
Returning points: 186

  • 5. LOUISVILLE CARDINALS
Last year: 5th (232 points)
Returning points: 221.5

  • 6. TENNESSEE LADY VOLUNTEERS
Last year: 7th (180.5 points)
Returning points: 172.5

  • 7. USC TROJANS
Last year: 12th (127 points)
Returning points: 125.5

  • 8. INDIANA HOOSIERS
Last year: 8th (169 points)
Returning points: 129

  • 9. TEXAS A&M AGGIES
Last year: 3rd (299 points)
Returning points: 124.5

  • 10. MINNESOTA GOPHERS
Last year: 10th (157 points)

FIRST-YEAR BRITS AT CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS, 2ND EDITION

Alicia Wilson, Cal

Wilson was already making waves this season by capturing 3 NCAA 'B' cuts as of our first post's publishing. The Guildford City Club swimmer capitalized on her opportunities at PAC-12's, scoring in both the 200 IM and 200 back events.

Although her 200 IM time of 1:56.52 at the PAC-12 Championships was slower than her season-best of 1:55.77, it was still enough to finish 10th overall and contribute to Cal's scoring haul. She also collected a 17th place finish in the 100 back in a mark of 53.23, shaving more than .3 off of her previous season-best of 53.60.

Wilson's premiere performance, however, came in the 200 back where she snagged up 8th place after entering the meet as the 14th seeded swimmer. Her time of 1:55.11 checks-in as a new personal best and inches Wilson closer to potential scoring position come NCAAs.

The NCAA record at Pac-12s was the start of something great this postseason. We wondered where Amy Bilquist was turns out she's ready to go. Isabel Ivey is going to have a big impact, and Cal may just be the top threat to Stanford this year. -JA
Isabel Ivey is exactly what Cal needed to solidify themselves ahead of tough Michigan and Texas teams, and Abbey Weitzeil's sprint speed is being very well-complemented by the likes of Amy Bilquist and Katie McLaughlin. -KO

#1: Stanford Cardinal (Previous Rank: #1)

On day one, 3-meters Phoebe Lamay managed an 11th place. Two furdettes have made it to the NCAA in this event. Top 8 finishers qualifies for the NCAA 'ship. Briana barely missed the final, placing 19th in the prelims. Top 18 advanced to the final's round.

Not all that conversant with diving, but looks as if Phoebs may have qualified for NCAAs, with her 7th place finish in the 1 metre final that had concluded just now on Day 2? Briana finished @ #12.

Briana was in 6th plc after the prelim but couldn't maintain it. Looks like furds got another 2 in.

Looks like Phoebe will be the only CAL women diver to make NCAAs. Briana made the finals in the platform but could only get to 11th place. Top 9 divers on platform I believe made the NCAA championship.

Sights Set On NCAA Championships

Hoping to see one or more of the following records & streaks accomplished during the past decade (+ 1 year) at the conclusion of the National Championships this week:

1) 5 National Titles (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019) - Obviously my top preference lol
2) 8 Top 2 finishes (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019)
3) 11 straight years in the Top 3 (2009-2019)
