Congratulations Amy on your 100 Back National Championship! We really wish you were here training with your beloved Bears, but we totally understand your need for a refresh. You will always be an all time great Golden Bear in our hearts.

Also to note, for those looking to future recruiting, the number one hope for our wishlist, Gretchen Walsh, is a super great backstroker along with being a knockout sprinter. Her B final winning time of 1:00.26 would have finished second in the A final. Add in her solid Fly, and we all know why she is the number one ranked recruit for the Class of 2021. Gretchen, please come join your BFF Isabelle !

Amazing achievement considering the broken finger! (at least it wasn't her usual stress fractures )

  • Reece Whitley: 2:09.69 - National Champ! Well done, Reece!

Another sweet one where we get treated to a Bear (Reece) earning the title of National Champion over his archrival (droy) - in the Furd's backyard no less

New PB for Whitley in the 200m Breast, first swim under 2:10, with his pair of races that day representing his fastest since 2017!

Meanwhile, back in Furdville for Junior Nationals, Rachel Klinker finished 6th in the 200 Fly. Looking to the future a 2022 recruit to keep an eye on is Justina Kozan from Brea, Ca. She performed admirably last week in Nationals with an A final in the 200IM, and yesterday won the 200 Fly at Juniors.

Sorry, not around much to update Bears related results in a timely fashion, but here's a noteworthy one below!

Several Bears past present & future making a mark @ 2019 Pam Ams the past couple of days - hopefully someone will post something on all of that...but in a nutshell:

Shields, Adrian, Kennedy, Long (MEX), Song (MEX), Carr, Josa, and of course Stadden (see writeups below on Belle) - did I miss anyone?

Really luvly to bear witness to Long, Shields & Josa racing right next to each other in the A final of the 100m Fly last night...a familiar sight during practice @ Spieker & Legends, I reckon...capped off with Tom taking the gold in a redemption-esque sort of moment

Also Carr owning the 200m Back A final, and Song dominating the B final - dare we hope for a repeat of these results @ this evening's 100m Back finals? :p

Go Backstroke U! Go Bears!

STADDEN'S 59.69 100 BACK MIXED MEDLEY LEAD-OFF NOW 8TH FASTEST EVER FOR 17-18

On the heels of her impressive 200m back swim yesterday while competing at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, 17-year-old Isabelle Stadden fired off a new lifetime best in the women's 100m back today as relay lead-off.

Stadden first clocked a morning 200m back time yesterday of 2:09.15, which the Cal commit lowered to 2:08.39 for silver behind teammate Alex Walsh in the individual final. But today, Stadden led-off the mixed medley relay in a 100m back split of 59.69. That sliced .02 off of the now-17-year-old's previous lifetime best of 59.71 logged just this past June at the Pro Swim Series in Clovis.

Today in Lima, Peru, Stadden's sub-minute outing was composed of 29.11/30.58 to give the Aquajet swimmer her new best time and also check her in as the 8th fastest American female ever in the 17-18 age group for the 100m back.

Catching up a bit on results @ 2019 Pam Ams (but by no means a comprehensive summary here!)...

1) Bear Bros trio of Daniel Carr, Tom Shields (amazing fly split!) & Nathan Adrian led Team USA to an impressive win over Brazil's A team in the Men's 4x100m Medley, crushing the old Pam Am relay record by almost 2 and a half seconds! Carr had previously claimed Gold in both of his individual races, the Men's 100m & 200m Back.

--------

USA'S LIGHTNING REACTION TIMES CONTRIBUTE TO PAN AM RECORD IN 4100 MEDLEY

--------

2) 2020 Cal commit Isabelle Stadden added a Gold medal in the Women's 4x100m Medley, having helped secured pole position in the morning heats for the Americans by over 5 seconds over 2nd seed Brazil and almost 6 seconds over Canada.

Isa had already earned a Silver medal in her 200m Back race, and would have been awarded a 2nd Gold in the 4x100m Mixed Medley by virtue of her lifetime best leadoff back leg @ prelims, if it wasn't for Team USA's DQ (breast) in finals, which had also "robbed" Nathan of another gold medal.

3) Alumna Madison Kennedy got on the podium with a Bronze in her signature 50m Free individual, as well as a Gold from her heats contribution on the 4x100m Mixed Free relay.

4) Alum Long Gutierrez threw down a 1:47.90 split to propel Mexico to a Bronze in the Men's 4x200m Free, breaking his country's National record for this relay in the process.

Long had earlier been on the history-making 4x100m Free squad, which had come away with Bronze and represented the first time Mexico had made the Pam Am swimming podium since 1975, I believe!

Not to overlook 2019 Junior Nationals which was being held down on the Farm this past week. Legacy Baby Bears Colby Mefford (2019) & Matthew Jensen (2020) had made their presence felt, whilst incoming froski Rachel Klinker (2019) snagged Bronze in the Women's 100m Fly (yellow cap in Lane 6 below):

Coming up in a week's time - 2019 World Juniors @ Budapest, where Bears will be well represented by Jason Louser (2019) and Dare Rose (2020), with Destin Lasco (2020) having declined his spot.

Sadly, no Cal commits on the Girls' roster though.

DESPITE TRAVEL ISSUES, STEPHANIE AU CLOCKS HONG KONG 100 BACK RECORD

Despite running into travel difficulties that almost sidelined the entire Hong Kong squad, swimmer Stephanie Au clinched a new National Record in the women's 100m backstroke while competing on day 2 of the World Cup in Singapore.

Au is a 3-time Olympian who also competed at the NCAA level for the Cal Bears.

Tonight, Au powered her way to a new personal best mark of 1:00.22 to lower her own record en route to bronze. Splitting 29.28/30.94, Au finished behind winner Emily Seebohm of Australia and Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, who touched in efforts of 59.43 and 59.48, respectively.

Of special significance for Au is the fact that her 1:00.22 time dips under the FINA 'A' cut for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The FINA 'A' cut was set at 1:00.25, so Au's new Hong Kong National Record slides under that marker by .03, giving her an individual event for her 4th Olympic Games.

Incoming frosh Jason Louser and 2020 commit Dare Rose represented Team USA (and Cal, of course) at Junior Worlds this past week in Budapest, Hungary.

Jason took on the 400 IM, ultimately swimming to a 4th place in Finals with a time of 4:16.66 - a 2 second drop from his previous PB of 4:18.59, achieved at last summer's Junior Nationals in Irvine.

Race video (courtesy of James Foster):

Dare took on relay duty in contributing to the 4x200 free relay and 4x100 medley relay in the prelims slots. Rose split a 1:48.78 on the second leg, and ultimately earned a gold medal for his contributions to Team USA's Gold-Medal winning and WJR-breaking relay that swam in finals. This morning, Dare also helped out Team USA with a 52.55 split on the butterfly leg of the medley relay. The finals team ultimately finished 2nd behind Russia, and Rose picks up a 2nd medal from the meet in the form of a silver.
