Tie for Izzy & Alicia! 1:54.68. Izzy's underwaters are a thing of beauty. Darcel was third in 1:56.75.

Ha! Really something to see & hear when the announcer reads off 5 Cal swimmers in a row -- Alicia, Izzy, Keaton, Sarah, and Ema all next to each other in the A-final.

Equally fitting -- 1:54.68 for a tie between Alicia & Izzy!

22.50 and 22.52 from Eloise and Maddie to go 1-2 in the B-final. Freshmen really crushing their swims tonight -- winning the B-finals so far!

Beautiful:

ABBEY WEITZEIL BECOMES FIRST WOMAN UNDER 21 SECONDS IN 50-YARD FREESTYLE

In a feat never done before, Abbey Weitzeil, Cal senior, has become the first woman ever under twenty-one seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. Clocking a time of 20.90 tonight to win the A-final at the 2019 Minnesota Invite, Weitzeil blew away the field with a stunning swim.

More importantly, she takes over a full tenth off of her old best, and the old American, NCAA, and U.S. Open records, which stood at 21.02. According to USA Swimming, she owns four of the top ten performances ever in this event. Further, she owns the top three performances of all time, and she is now a full quarter-second quicker than anyone has ever been (Erika Brown, the second-best performer ever, has been as fast as 21.15).

It was only last calendar year that we saw the first man under eighteen seconds in this event, and now we've seen the first woman under twenty-one. Weitzeil, who is tied with Simone Manuel for the best female relay split ever with a 20.45, could take that down this meet, too. Looking ahead to the 100 free, Manuel's NCAA/American/U.S. Open record of 45.59 is a bit tougher, and Weitzeil is the #4 performer of all-time with a 46.29 from back in 2014.

1. 20.90 ABBEY WEITZEIL USA - 2019 MINNESOTA INVITE - 12/5/2019, MINNEAPOLIS
2. 21.02 Abbey Weitzeil USA - 2019 NCAA DI Women's Swimming - 3/21/2019, Austin

3:35.19 -- I believe Alicia, Ali, Maddie, and Ayla to grab first handily in the B-final.

3:28.52 -- Keaton, Ema, Izzy, and Abbey. Izzy really closed the gap on Michigan, and Abbey brought down the hammer for the Cal win, coming from a bit behind to take the event by a body length. Truly incredible to watch.

Abbey Weitzeil celebrates her new 50 free American record with a couple of Golden Bears.

An American Record For Abbey

Weitzeil Becomes First Woman Under 21 Seconds In 50 Free (20.90)

MINNEAPOLIS - Cal senior Abbey Weitzeil had long wanted to become the first woman to swim the 50-yard freestyle in under 21 seconds. On Thursday night at the Minnesota Invitational, her dream came true.

Weitzeil touched the wall in 20.90 seconds to lower her own American, U.S. Open and NCAA record of 21.02 set last March at the NCAA Championships. In fact, she now owns the top three times ever, and four of the top five, in the 50 free.

Weitzeil, a 2016 Olympian, gave a hint of what was to come Thursday night after she earned the top seed in morning prelims with a 21.16, which was the fastest in the country this season at the time.

Weitzeil wasn't the only Golden Bear to reach the top of the platform, and Cal swimmers earned the honor in the 200 individual medley as sophomores Isabel Ivey and Alicia Wilson tied in 1:54.68, which puts them fifth in the country so far this season. In addition, junior Sarah Darcel was third in 1:56.75 and senior Keaton Blovad fourth in 1:56.85 to give the Bears the top four places.

Cal also closed out the session with a victory in the 400 medley relay when Blovad, Ema Rajic, Ivey and Weitzeil finished in 3:28.58, which stands as the No. 2 time in the nation and 10th best on Cal's all-time list.

In other events, junior Robin Neumann paced the Cal group in the 500 free with a fourth-place finish in 4:41.87, while freshman Sarah DiMeco was sixth in 4:44.44. Briana Thai also took eighth on the 1-meter springboard (247.45).

In the team standings, Cal leads with 457 points, with Michigan second (278) and Texas third (258). Arizona (211), Minnesota (162), Harvard (94) and Iowa (90) rounds out the teams competing.

Nice to see both Ema and Ali get in the A-final for the 1 BR tonight.

Good back swims so far this morning from Backstroke U. Not sure if I've ever seen Abbey swim a 100 back recently -- 51.66, I believe. Fun to see! Cal puts up 4 swimmers in the A-final and 3 in the B-final, headlined by Izzy (51.53).

Quick comparisons of times achieved at this mid-season invite (2019 Minn) v. last year's (2018 UGA)...meet's currently in progress, so I may not have caught all the latest updates...

Apologise for the late post :p ...had missed this morning's heats, and it does take a spot of work to manually look up the stats, cross-referencing from multiple sources & all that stuff...hope hadn't committed any massive typos here!

Smashing to see almost everyone from the team stepping up here! The augmented depth & breadth contributed by our underrated freshie class (#6 according to Swimswam here) are quite evident across a number of events when compared to the top heavy composition of last season's "Dream Team" led squad.

Brill that Alicia's venturing into less familiar territory going for the longer IM instead of her usual backstroke entry, and Abbey experimenting with backstroke instead of breast for her mid-season double - both moves appear to be paying dividends.

Bears take the 200 Medley Relay with the fastest time in the nation, 1:27.14 (ahead of Tenn's 1:27.20)...thanks to Abbey's 20.81 anchor (no surprise lol)!!!

Izzy led the A squad off in 22.18, Eloise contributed a 22.14, and Madds put down a 22.01.

Sophomore Alicia Wilson won the 400 IM in a personal-best 4:07.51 at the Minnesota Invitational Friday.

Fast Times Keep Coming For Bears

Cal Wins Four More Races At Minnesota Invitational
MINNEAPOLIS - Cal kept up its march to the top of the podium Friday night at the Minnesota Invitational as the Golden Bears captured four races and posted seven swims that rank among the eight fastest in the country so far this season.

Alicia Wilson got things started by winning the 400-yard individual medley, followed by victories from Abbey Weitzeil in the 200 free, Isabel Ivey in the 100 backstroke and the closing 200 free relay.

In the 400 IM, Wilson posted a personal-best time of 4:07.51, which moves her up to No. 6 on Cal's all-time list and places her seventh among 400 IMers in the country. Sarah Darcel was third in 4:09.26, while Ashlyn Fiorilli took eighth in 4:18.53; Sarah DiMeco showed big improvement from her morning qualifying swim and went 4:15.57 in the B final.

Ivey led the Bears in the 100 fly and took second in the event with a time of 51.46, which puts her seventh in the national standings this season. Maddie Murphy was eighth for the Bears in 53.51.

In the 200 free, Weitzeil used her sprinter's speed to race to an early lead and won comfortably in 1:42.25 for the No. 2 time in the country. The swim followed her American record of 20.90 in the 50 free from Thursday night. In addition, Robin Neumann swam the NCAA's fifth-best 200 free time, going 1:44.05 for second place, while Ayla Spitz was fourth in 1:45.52.

Ema Rajic put herself among the national leaders in the 100 breaststroke as her third-place mark of 59.31 ranks eighth nationally. Ali Harrison also competed in the A final and was fifth in 1:00.30.

Ivey, in her second race of the night, raced to a 51.08 to prevail in the 100 backstroke No. 4 in the country with Keaton Blovad fifth in 52.45, Spitz sixth in 52.85 and Aislinn Light winning the B final in 53.73. Briana Thai moved up nicely from her morning qualifying on the 3-meter board to finish fourth in the final with a score of 308.15.

Finally, Cal's 200 free relay of Ivey, Eloise Riley, Murphy and Weitzeil touched first in 1:27.14 to give the foursome the top time in the nation this year. The Bears are the defending NCAA champions and have won the event at nationals four of the past five years.

Overall, Cal leads the team standings with 807 points, followed by Michigan (523.5) and Texas (421). The meet wraps up on Saturday with morning prelims at 8 a.m. PT and finals at 4 p.m. PT.
