Mile update: Frosh Sarah Dimeco was 5th in 16:12.89, just off her PB from Minnesota

Mile update:

5 Dimeco, Sarah FR CAL-PC 16:11.14 16:12.89

A bit off her best time (16:09.74 from Dec. '18) but again, great showing! Kudos for Sarah in scoring big points in our long-weak distance events.

Didn't realize Sarah had already cemented herself among the all-time top 10 Bears in the mile, but she sits 5th. Really a bummer that Anna is off the team; would've helped us here, for sure

Judging by the splits: 28.68/32.20/41.36/40.04, I think she went for the 100 breast split to go for the NCAA qualifier cut. Sadly, it's slower than all 3 of yesterday's times so it's down to the Last Chance time trial tomorrow morning if she chooses to swim it.

Great swim from Rachel in the 200 fly! 1:53.81 to take 3rd.

3 Klinker, Rachel FR CAL-PC 1:54.07 1:53.81 27
10 Fiorilli, Ashlyn FR CAL-PC 1:58.42 1:58.17 17
18 Bailey, Elizabeth JR CAL-PC 2:02.65 2:00.30 7

A bit of a slow close for Rachel (31.32), the second-slowest final split of the A-final heat, but yet another best time for her and now the no. 8 time in Cal history! (Boots Jazzy off the list, alas.)

Wow, looked like a great lead-off leg from Izzy. Kept up pretty well with Hansson. --> Cal ekes out a silver-medal finish by 0.01 over LSJU. U$C takes the 400 FR title very handily.

Pretty crazy to think about the winning time with the Bears' 3:07.41 from last year. SwimSwam comment on one of these live recaps mentioned that times all-around seem slower this year (Olympics and whatnot), but definitely missing Katie + Amy's blazing splits on our relays this year.

For additional reference: tonight's top 2 B-relay times

Final team scores:
Stanford - 1598
Cal - 1224.5
USC - 1212

Will leave further analysis to anyone, but as a whole, I didn't quite expect the second place battle to be so close between Trojans & Bears. Obviously, nobody expected Abbey's (second) hyperextension and subsequent scratches (nor Darcel's injury), but Transsom had great swims this week to help lead USC for the future (though Hansson has wrapped up her conference career here).

Can't be said enough that the youngest Bears on the team had great swims to kick off their post-seasons. Let's hope everybody trains hard and rests up accordingly to make a great run in March!

{was writing a brief note on the diving below before I saw that solobear had beaten me to it }

Quick mention that our divers contributed to fending off the Trojanettes' push to challenge Bears for runner-up in the team title race tonight.

Briana Thai snagged 24 points finishing 6th on platform finals, and Cassie Graham had helped with her 16 pts from the 11th spot in prelims.

What happened to soph Cassidy Bayer, 5th rated national recruit? Is she injured? I don't recall her participating in much this season...Sorry if I missed this but I review the boxscores of each meet and pay the most attention come the postseason.

The three seniors that Cal will have to find a way to replace are obviously Abbey Weitzeil, Keaton Blovad & Maddie Murphy. The Bears are bringing in the 3rd rated swimmer in the country, Isabelle Stadden (200m back). The overall recruit class of 2000 has five swimmers and two divers. The swimmer from Denmark appears to offer potential. AW & MM were free stylers that need to be replaced. Blovad was great @ IM, backstroke & free. Which of the newcomers might be able to fill the void in the IM and free areas? Just curious...Thanks in advance.

Invite times from last year:
  • 100 breast - 59.93

  • {posted 7 Dec 2019}

    Hopefully, Ali, Cassidy, and Maddie can drop a little more time and qualify like they did last year.

    {posted 26 Feb 2020, before start of 2020 Pac-12s}

    Here are some estimated NCAA qualifying time ranges based on the swims to-date this year.

    Event | Target: #29 = likely in

    100 Breast | 59.85

    I would venture that 2 more swimmers in the blue & gold will join their sisters for the main event in March - Maddie & Ali, both of whom respond very well to a spot of taper.

      Ali
    • 100 Breast - SB = 1:00.30 (#45) ... PB = 59.52 (best chance of qualifying here - Harrison had dropped a 59.79 @ 2019 Pac-12s)

    Yasss!!! Chances do look pretty good for Ali, keeping fingers crossed for her...

    --------

    PAC-12 LAST CHANCE: FOELSKE SETS 200 FL ASU SCHOOL RECORD TO QUALIFY FOR NCAAS

    Cal's Ali Harrison matched her best in prelims with a 59.85 in the 100 breast. She's ranked 34th in the nation with no major conferences remaining, so she's a likely NCAA qualifier.

    • Sarah Darcel (200/400 IM)
    • Robin Neumann (100/200 free)
    • Ema Rajic (100/200 breast)
    • Keaton Blovad (100 back)
    • Sarah Dimeco (1650 free)
    • Rachel Klinker (200 fly)
    • Riley, Eloise FR: 50 free, 200 free, 100 free
    • Harrison, Ali JR: 200 IM, 100 breast, 200 breast
    • Spitz, Ayla FR: 500 free, 200 free,

    Assuming Ali qualifies with her time in the last chance swim is the above the complete list of qualifiers? I know Murphy still on the border at #34 but can she be taken as a relay swimmer only? I know coach Teri doesn't like to take relay swimmers only but think Murphy will be of value in 4 of the relays.

    Maddie's safely in at 34 in the 50 Free. No way 4 or 5 late time trial swimmers will overtake her.

    Bit of a long shot, but Courtney Mykkanen is tied with Ayla at 41 in the 200 Back. Kinda surprised CM didn't swim a last chance time trial yesterday. Would probably need 1 or 2 scratches to move up. Not probable, but possible. Courtney's a great student and teammate and a multigenerational Cal legacy, so would be a fitting sentimental capstone to a terrific Cal career.

    Keeks, Maddie, Eloise, Ayla, Rachel, and Ali are all great adds to the relays. Teri now has tons of options on all legs of all five relays. Needs to leave Abbey and Izzy off at least one relay each.

    Bears put the work in mid-season, so their relay seeds are fine even without Abbey for two relays at Pacs. Keeks really stepped it up on relays at Pacs.
