The California Golden Bears are hard at work on the virtual recruiting trail and have announced the addition of 33 student-athletes to the track and field team for the 2020-21 school year. This is the first recruiting class of Robyne Johnson's tenure as the leader of the Cal track and field program.
Quote:

"This class is a testament to hard work by our staff to find a group of student-athletes that reflect the direction and vision of our program," Johnson said. "We foresee many of these young men and women reaching the podium of the Pac-12 and on to a national level. We look forward to watching these student-athletes make their mark at Cal for years to come. Go Bears!"
Johnson is bringing in a slew of distance runners, as that clearly was a point of emphasis. Another point of emphasis also seems to be keeping great local talent on the west coast as of the distance runner additions, only one of them hails from out of state, and he's a transfer from Penn State.

Liam Anderson is a soph at Stanford and Clemon is a frosh university of Florida. Middleton-persons was also a 2020 recruit is now at Oklahoma state. All 3 would had been some of the top local recruits in high school. Unfortunately none of the top local recruits have selected Cal so far.

More from my old sources.

Did Marcus Young (PV; Miramonte) choose to go directly to medical school?

Will Naseem Woods (El Cerrito, CA) play football in addition to running track?

Not sure where Marcus Young have gone to. There are a number of former Miramonte boosters on Bear insiders. Maybe they can fill us in on his where about.

Disappointing so far where the new staff still haven't update the XC roster for 2020 and the track roster fors 2020-21. Many school have!!

Is there a back story on this class size? seems like this is 3x normal recruiting class size, with about 9 xfers from other 4 year programs. Are we suddenly a coveted program? Do we have an extraordinary number of xfers out?

It's about 2x as normal. Most of these are getting minimum scholarship money, probably at most for books. These are the true Student athletes. Of the frosh I would think Garrett MacQuiddy and Garcia are our better recruits but remember we have loss a number of big time athletes who have left this year as 5 year seniors, McKay Johnson school record holder in the shot, Chochan twice a big meet hero, and our best sprinter Zion Nelson #3 100 & #2 200 school record. There aren't any big time recruits yet!

Edited failed to mentioned weightmen as one of our top recruits, Jeff Duensing from Esperanza HS in Socal. He was 8th (58.35) in the SP and 4th in the discus (177) at state last year. It was unfortunately he like all of the other HS seniors missed out their track season. Even though we loss Johnson our weight program continual to be our strongest events.

I believe the new coach hire Maverick Darling is meant to fill the recruiting void left by Davis. Has to have been hard in this ultra-competitive environment recruiting without a recruiting coordinator and one coach down. I expect to see a rebound in recruiting now that we're back to full strength.
