Bummer
He was the guy I liked best for the job.
But I understand, he lacks the pizzazz to get the attention of the masses and so was perhaps an unlikely candidate at the stage of his life.

(CNN)Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has decided against running for president in 2020, he announced on Tuesday.
"As I've thought about a possible presidential campaign, the choice before me has become clear. Should I devote the next two years to talking about my ideas and record, knowing that I might never win the Democratic nomination? Or should I spend the next two years doubling down on the work that I am already leading and funding, and that I know can produce real and beneficial results for the country, right now? I've come to realize that I'm less interested in talking than doing," he wrote in an opinion piece for Bloomberg.
"And I have concluded that, for now, the best way for me to help our country is by rolling up my sleeves and continuing to get work done."

I hope you guys realize the choice in 2020 is the Democrat or Trump. If a centrist 3rd party candidate ran it could take votes away from the Democrat and re-elect Trump.

The Trumpers are going to vote Trump and the Democrats are going to vote for Democrats. You Trump hating Republicans really have no home and there are actually very few of you on a national scale. Democrats may win without you, but it would seal Trump's fate if we had your votes. On the other hand, a centrist 3rd party candidate would either a) be of no consequence, or b) pull enough Democrats away to re-elect Trump. It's really his best shot.

When you guys root for a 3rd candidate you're really just rooting to help Trump.

Trump killed the (fake) billionaire running for POTUS, especially in the year socialism stopped being a bad word.

Steyer also declined.

Schultz the coffee boi is getting his butt stomped, figure he'll drop out once the polls happen or he gets pulverized in a debate, or baited to give how many calories in a soy latte venti...with a squirt of carmel and sprinkles.

Bloomberg and Steyer can at least read the political landscape.

It's not like we haven't seen this movie before and it ends with an egotistical and corrupt billionaire and his offspring flouting every law that they can in pursuit of increasing their wealth while destroying the country's democratic institutions.

Here is a Democrat when their candidate does not get the Democratic nomination:

...and then they refuse to vote in the election and you get a second term of the fat, orange moral bankrupt.

Bloomberg is a credit to this country and the fact that he's chosen to make a difference as opposed to running for President is going to make the world better. Unfortunately, he's going to have to run uphill given that much of our country would rather take us in the wrong direction. Still, I think his commitment to change is great and I wish him success for all of our sake.

It's an interesting question, to me, if it's better for the dems to nominate a moderate or a progressive. Are there more votes with the "never trump" conservatives like yourself, or are there more votes in getting the base energized with a progressive candidate.

I really have no idea who has a better chance of beating trump (between a moderate or a progressive).

But its my suspicion that the democratic base is out for blood and not interested in any sort reconciliation with the more reasonable wing of the Conservative party (you never trumpers only have trump to blame for that).

Which is why I think the dems are going to nominate a progressive. Whether that's the right move only history can judge.

supposedly the country is so divided the it comes down to few districts typically, and I'm not in one of them. And I, like other conservatives (I'm probably not conservative in many states because I'm a social liberal), have my limits as to what I can tolerate in a left candidate. Doesn't mean we vote for Trump (we could arguably if it is Bernie, but we would likely vote for say Harris), but could decide not to vote or vote a protest vote for a third party candidate. Not sure this answers your question. But pollsters have it down to certain swing states and districts, and my wild arse guess is it depends on the issuers being espoused by the candidates (like support for blue collars workers, etc.) I don't think it will matter in terms of moderate vs progressive, but someone with more expertise should address this.

Any Republican that voted for Trump in 2016 loses all rights to call themselves a Trump-hating Republican. You however retain the honor of being called an idiot by me (and many others) for all time.

That has zero chance of happening this time. Even with the Bernie bros.

The Dems hate republicans so much (I was listening to some on tv tonight and I swear, I hate them with a passion!) that they may very well go for a candidate who is so far from republicans that their heads spin!

However, I think a moderate is better bet to beat trump.
Dems will vote for anyone not named trump, be it moderate or republican. The key will be to choose someone who is a viable option for republicans who don't love trump, and there are many. They could stomach a moderate, but not a radical socialist leftist.

All I know is I will vote in November for whomever had the best chance of destroying the evil orange man. I could care less who gets the honor.

Bloomberg was going to run as a democrat, not an independent.

I ain't gonna vote for any independent, even if it's Jesus, because if it results in no candidate getting 270 electoral votes then House state electorates will decide it and the GOP has the advantage ther and so Trump will win.
Destroy Trump. Nothing else matters.

Well, you and any other anti-Trumper has to vote Democrat. There's no chance of a third party candidate that wouldn't result in a Trump re-election.

But more importantly, it isn't the candidate who will destroy the evil orange man. It's you. And me. And everyone else who realizes that Trump is a blight on our country.

Voter turnout is the thing this time. There is no excuse not to get out and vote that ****er out.

Trump got a lesser % of the vote than Romney. Let that sink in. He didn't win the election as much as Clinton lost it. She lost it because young people didn't turn out or voted third parties, because minorities didn't turn out for her as with Obama and because about 20% of the Obama white blue collar voters voted for Trump. You don't need Republicans or moderates to beat Trump- Clinton's problem was Democrats. She was a pathetic candidate. The mistake would be to once again search for the mythical moderate with another troglodyte loser, Crazy Old Joe.

Her sense of entitlement to the presidency has served her poorly in two elections. If she had had any serious opposition (I supported Sanders, but I knew he could never win the party's nomination even on a level playing field which this was not), she would have never gotten the nomination.

Well, if you were her, knew what you knew about politics, the White House, the world stage, and you were comparing her and trump as per their qualifications, you'd have felt entitled to. It was no contest.
But then, we have a nation of idiots, so... none of us saw it coming.

I tell you, I would not doubt that the Russians tampered with voting machines in the key states to actually throw the election to trump. There's been no review that I've heard that didn't happen. It just doesn't make sense. I have a hard time believing that that many people are so stupid. I don't know why I can't seem to accept it.

We are going to end up bankrupting the nation thru too much debt. We will lose the dollar as the premier reserve currency, store of wealth.
Special interests control the political parties, the media sells stories that catch eyeballs rather than focus on the big picture, and voters are too busy and uneducated to know the difference.

In that case, this is a non-story. Bloomberg would lose a Democratic primary by a lot. The only people rooting for him to run are Republicans, the media, and political consultants looking for a payday.

When threads take a course like this I always like to remind everybody that Hillary Clinton was chosen by the American people to be President. She received more votes than anybody ever has except Barack Obama.

She did this despite unprecedented interference from the FBI, from Russia (aided by her opponent's campaign in unprecedented criminal fashion), and despite 25 years worth of billionaire funded media hit pieces against her. The American people aren't so stupid. Our constitution has some flaws. Possibly fatal flaws. I have some thoughts on that Constitution thread but I haven't written them up yet.

I think there is revisionist history going on and people are bashing Hillary because white uneducated men fell for a con. She would have been a fine president and was easily the best person for the job.

The republican hit job worked and they paired it with a con man. It was barely enough to win but here we are.

Why? Seriously! Because she's the second most unpopular Presidential candidate in history! Because a candidate is responsible for her campaign and it's success. Because she lost 30 states. Because she lost states Democratic candidates haven't lost in decades. Because her campaign and messaging sucked- she didn't even visit Wisconsin etc..etc. Because she lost to Donald Trump.

Okay. I didn't know if you were assigning blame to more specific things.
