Closing down the casinos and hotels for a month is a tremendous financial blow to the state economy. Tens of billions a month, taxed to provide the money needed to run the state government during a crisis.

The shutdown of the state's battered hospitality industry will cost the Southern Nevada economy an estimated $38.9 billion, the Nevada Resort Association said Friday.

I imagine if the shutdown is longer than a month the economic blow will get larger as some sectors may not fully recover.

The Feds appear to be willing to reimburse airlines for their lost revenue, but the impact on Nevada is just as large and focused on just one area in the country.

They built a multi-billion dollar business based on people's vices and hedonism and now they have to turn off the money faucet for awhile. Las Vegas is like the LAST place in the world I feel sorry for in all this.

I don't feel sorry for the corporations, but what about the people making a living as a result? Waitresses, bus drivers, and the like?

Their situation is unfortunate and we should definitely make an effort to help them, in the short term.

On the other hand, they have chosen to live in a man-made oasis in the desert, working as part of a multi-billion dollar industry that profits on people's vices and hedonism, so maybe we help them get through this and then that's it. (Okay, I have not really thought this through, I admit.)

The brothels are still open. If you want to help the Nevada economy, go up and give them some business.

At first I was thinking Christian Brothers and maybe they were selling spirits in Nevada.

Then I thought maybe the second 'R' should be an "L" (as in ucRa)

Still, as far as impact on the Nevada economy, the 'Ls' are peanuts.

You understand of course that Nevada is where the inventory for California's economy is stored.

It was interesting to hear yesterday the analysis that the problem with PME supplies is that it is produced on the theory of "Just in time" inventory and cannot ramp up suddenly. Just In Time inventory was the accountant's method to reduce invenotry at factories and service centers. Seems to be a big time FAIL in a pandemic.

Fortunately for California, "Just in Time" inventory is stored in Nevada. Without Nevada, the California service sector sucks big time

The sad part is that the big corporations will get bailed out, not these people.

A temporary UBI would be the answer, most of the money will get recycled in the local economy.

I think also we need to look at the risk-reward picture from extending the lockdown beyond a couple of months. If we save 100,000 lives on one end, we might end up losing as many people when you have 50-100 million people going through severe economic hardship, the kind of hardship that could be fatal for around 0.1% of them.

Japan seems to have managed to spare its economy while containing the epidemic, as is S. Korea, we need to get to a semi-normal plateau by May that won't destroy the economy but will still have much higher containment measures than normal conditions.

Yeah, I have nothing against Nevada's warehouse industry, I just don't care to bail out the casinos (any more than I want to bail out cruise ship companies).

That's where the government should theoretically step in. Help the little people, let the casinos pound sand.

Will they? Stay tuned.

Funny, that's on the sign at one of the brothels.
