Yes, he will sign a LOI, but defer enrollment to 2019.

2019 since he's deferring his enrollment to serve his LDS mission

    Trevin Knell
    Woods Cross, UT (Woods Cross)
    Shooting Guard
    Ht 6-5
    Wt 175
    CLASS OF 17

According to ESPN, which designates Knell as a three-star prospect, he maintains offers from Air Force, Montana, Rice, Robert Morris, San Diego, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley, Washington State, Weber State and Wyoming in addition to California.

No other big conference schools there (unless you count WSU).
That said, I like the Mormon mission aspect of it. Delay enrollment 2 years, let the body (and person) grow and then by the time they are junior or senior, they are that much more mature (and competitive).

So this is a verbal with a development condition on it? Somewhat different from the verbals with scholastic conditions (assuming his academics are in order). Bball is not football. You take a year or two off at this age and your skills development suffer - far outweighing physical development.

The mission aspect is why he didn't have more offers. Schools knew he'll be going straight out of high school and schools like Butler and Oklahoma told him they'd have offered but have more immediate needs. Same with BYU, who would be a natural fit. They already have some recruits going on mission and needed more immediate help.

Cal was willing to wait as Knell fits exactly what they're looking for in a big guard with elite range that can create his own shot that's also a great student (4.0 gpa). He said that a student athlete's collegiate athletic commitments are taken into consideration with where they're assigned so they can keep their skills sharp. And we're taking about a highly motivated kid who's already upped his lifting and shooting regimen to prepare for his future. He said Cuonzo told him they're excited they'll be bringing in "grown man gunslinger."

Question for MB or others: what are the NCAA rules regarding scholarship limits when it comes to kids taking mission trips? Does Knell count against their scholarship limits for the upcoming seasons prior to his entering Cal? If not, then what is the harm in offering him even if you have more immediate guard needs if you're a Butler or Oklahoma?

No, he signs an LOI this year but doesn't count till he enrolls.

Some programs aren't willing to tie up future scholarships and instead focus on immediate needs.

Cool with me! Their loss; our gain.

Knell is clearly a long range sharpshooter, who sets-up and gets his shot off quickly after the catch. The videos feature Knell's long-range shooting ability, but don't much show other aspects of his game. I'm confident Cuonzo & Co have him well scouted. Welcome to Cal!
