The #23 Bears are 15-3 but the team is in a batting slump at the moment. Last weekend, Cal won 1-0 over Iowa while losing to Northwestern, 2-3, and to #1 Florida, 0-4. Three runs scored over three games is weak. The Bear batters began banging the ball in the finale vs Indiana, winning 6-3 (6). Cal actually scored three more in the top of the 7th inning but those results were washed out due to rain. The Bear hitters struckout a bunch last weekend (27 Ks over last 5 games). Rood & Reed both failed to make contact twice each. Both of their bats were quieted down...Alvarez, Pogue & McCue were silent, too. Fortunately, JJ, Aldrete, Pettis, Taylor & Fillmore began to heat up. Bowers hit a grand slam in a rare start in RF.

This weekend Cal faces Montana (7-12), host Tulsa (11-8), Wichita State (11-6) & Texas Tech (11-9). These four teams can score runs but their pitching is not top notch. I do not believe that any of this quartet has
earned a victory against the Pac Nine, yet. Cal is only scoring 4.40 runs per game while yielding 2.66. Fielding % has improved to .972 which is helpful. It appears as if there will be no live feeds of this tournament. Live Stats are available per the website below-what is with the early morning start times of 3 of the 4 games? Who wants to awaken @ 7am on a Saturday to track stats on-line? Is it due to the Oklahoma heat?

Is 2017 the first season that Cal softball is not visiting Hawaii? Is Oklahoma the substitute?

Games will be back-to-back doubleheaders..squeezing 4 games over 2 days. Sat's games (2nd day) will scheduled at 7am & then 9:30 am (PST). Must be in a rush to get out of OKla with an early departure time. Hope K-Finch start a game but think she has bee primarily a reliever this year.

Cal-Montana live stats (11:22 am PST)
    http://www.sidearmstats.com/tulsa/softball/

Montana (8-13) defeated Texas Tech earlier Friday morning:
    http://stats.gogriz.com/sports/w-sof...e.htm#TEAM.MLB
Olea, Coburn & Petrino are the Grizzlie's three best players. Pitching is mediocore.

Both teams are pitching #3 pitchers based upon ERA. First inning was an orderly six up,
six dowm. Montana is throwing a southpaw, Stensby (4.38 ERA) and opposing hitters have
BA%=.324 against her. Cal has six lefties in a row followed by three righties: Laxamana, Fillmore & Bowers

Bears loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the 2nd but failed to score. Pettis is doubled up off sac fly to LF by Laxamana. Did she leave too early or was she thrown out cleanly at home? Pettis got thrown out at home last week on a
delayed decision to go home. Bowers lined out back to the mound to close out the inning. Could have had a big inning but nada...

Cal scores a run in 3rd inning c/o two bunt singles. The Bears have four hits (3 bunts & single to CF). The Bears loaded the bases again in the 4th inning [single to LF by Fillmore) and Montana brought in their #4 pitcher Stephenson (5.25 ERA) to get Kylie Reed out. JJ singled to lead-off B5th but nothing. After 5 frames, Bears 1, Grizz 0.

    http://www.calbears.com/documents/20...lifornia_7.pdf

Big inning for Cal in the bottom of the sixth with 6 runs on 6 hits. Final Score: Cal 7, Montana 0. Stephanie Trzcinski tosses three hit complete game shutout. Exactly the type of pitching effort needed for the Bears to succeed in 2017! GO BEARS!

Kudos to Stephanie for stepping up and pitching a fantastic game with 10K, 3h, & 3bb! Her era drops to 1.94.

I hope that the Bears miss Emily Watson (1.75) this afternoon. Tulsa is 12-9.

Happy to see Bradie playing well. She got on base 3 times today and had the hit erased in her last at bat vs Indiana due to weather. She is way too talented to not be starting every game.

Bradie Fillmore does look sound at the plate. She has a good batting eye and works the count. To date, she is pulling most every thing to left field but has hit a couple balls to right...I hope that she continues to develop. I hope that HC Ninemire finds a way to plug Taurie Pogue into the lineup, too. Fillmore has taken her job. Pogue is striking out too much but I have no doubt that she can hit. McCue strikes out at the highest percentage on the team. I hope that Diane doesn't continue to start her in CF. GO BEARS!

Pay for view? Well, Tulsa always has a good program. No Starbucks in the morning.

Good for Steph. Gotta have innings for your pitchers BEFORE Pac starts.

With that, contact hitting works great. However, waiting to make up for a dry 5 innings with 1good inning looks good in the final box but it won't beat a good team.

Tulsa Hurricanes 3, Cal 0. The host team is starting their ace, RHP Emily Watson, so the Bears are in deep trouble. Cal looks really shaky in this night affair in Oklahoma. Tulsa got three runs on four hits along with an error on 2B and a passed ball by Annie Aldrete. Two hits were infield, another a bloop to CF plus a ground single up the middle...Kylie Reed made a two base throwing error on a slow roller to her. Zoe Conley also walked a hitter and went to three ball counts on three others. She only was able to generate one swinging strike to eight batters in the B1st.

In the B2nd, Tulsa loaded the bases with one down but only tallied one run for a 4-0. The leadoff batter grounded to SS and Bradie Fillmore dropped the throw for an error. Conley walked the next hitter on four balls in a row and yielded a ground ball through the hole on the left side. Another bloop hit to left plated the run.

Cal's pitching coach, Chuck D'Arcy, replaced Zoe to begin the 3rd inning with Katie Sutherland-Finch. First batter doubled off of the CF ivy. They have a nice stadium with ivy growing over the walls (like Wrigley Field). Conley went two innings and was roughed up for 4 earned runs, 6 singles plus two Cal errors + a PB. Rood stole second base and JJ was called out on another attempt to steal. It appeared to me that her legs hit the bag before the tag on her upper torso. The Mitty star threw up her hands in protest of the umpire's call.

Watson has dominated the Bears through five frames with eight strikeouts. Only Jazmyn Jackson has a clue with two line singles out to RCF. JJ has a way of topping the ball when she pulls it. Her swing is not powerful nor level but she kind of hooks the pitches. Unorthodox is an understatement. Lindsay Rood was the other base runner with an infield hit to the leftside of the infield.

Katie Sutherland-Finch completed four innings of shutout ball. She gave up quite a few hard hit balls including five hits but made the out pitch when she needed to...She possesses the team's best ERA.

The Hurricane hurler finished her complete shutout allowing four singles while striking out nine Bears. This game was extremely one-sided like the Florida 4-0 whitewash of Cal. The difference is that this team is
unranked while the Gators were rated #1 in the nation. This Tulsa pitcher was the best pitcher that I've seen Cal face this season besides the trio from Florida. The announcer warned that the games scheduled for tomorrow might be in jeopardy due to bad weather.

Bottom line. Game management. Lucky to be 4-0. Don't understand the thinking.

Switching to KSF but lots of momentum to overcome.

We can't hit good pitching. Going to get absolutely rocked in conference play. Imagine trying to score runs of O'Toole, Alvelo, etc.
