Baseball Cal softball enters Pac 9 season w/ a whimper...

Minnesota obliterated Cal today, 10-0, in Berkeley. The Golden Gophers are now 23-2 and their ace, Groenewegen (11-1), held the Bears to a single. The Bears defeated Lehigh yesterday, 3-0, on only 4 hits. On Friday night, Tulsa shutout Cal, 4-0. To make matters worse, the Bear ace, Zoe Conley, lasted 2 innings last Friday and 2 1/3 this afternoon before being KO'd. Actually, the two Bear wins recently have been shutouts thrown by Stephanie Trzcinski.

Cal has gone on a hitting strike. The team batting average has dropped approximately 30 points while the team's ERA continues to rise. The result is the #23 Bears (17-5) are beating opponents by 1.2 rpg entering conference play. The Bears open with three games at undefeated (24-0) #3 ranked Oregon in Eugene. Ninemire cannot continue to start Danielle Bowers in CF. She is overmatched at the plate with 9 strikeouts in 21 ABs. Cal needs either Taurie Pogue or Aleah Laxamana in the lineup instead.

We can't hit or score against good pitching. Shocked players like Sparacino wants to come to Cal considering how so many good hitters are turned into .250 batting averages with zero homeruns. Conference play is going to be rough, sadly

Looks like possible musical pitching too. Stephanie pitching better than Zoe at this time. We will see who opens Pac-10. I'm with you a change in HC is needed or a new batting coach.

Did anyone see Cal defense in 1st inning? Absolute stage fright. Great pitching provided by Zoe Conley with ball never leaving the infield. SS throws wide of 1st base for an error and 2B drops a soft liner directly at her. Then the Ducks had two runners caught at second base and the Bears did NOT even attempt to get either in a run down...Wow-what is going on?

Cal got two hits and a walk in the second inning & got a sac fly from Alleah Laxamana to plate a run. Bears had bases loaded and Danielle Bowers struckout on three pitches. She was the only batter that looked over matched against the Oregon pitcher. Why can't Cal find someone who can play CF? Both McCue and Jackson were shaky out there this season. I believe HC Ninemire is playing her for her defense.

Oregon takes the lead in the B2nd with 2 runs. Two more score in the 3rd. Add a homerun by Svekis in the 5th: Ducks 5, Bears 1.

Lindsay Rood has struckout 3 consecutive times and Jazmyn Jackson is also 0-3 without a ball out of the infield. Otherwise-Cal has had base runners. The team has seven hits plus the Ducks have commited an error. The two "big sticks" need to contribute. Vanessa Alvarez appears to be trying to work a base on balls every AB and either strikes out or doesn't swing until she is deep in the hole with two strikes. Impressive pinch hit double to the RCF fence by frosh Bradie Fillmore leading off of the fourth but she was left stranded...She was pinch hitting for Bowers. I hope that she's in the lineup tomorrow.

Two good things came out of today's conference opening loss. Zoe Conley pitched better than she had recently and completed six innings, yielding five runs. She actually balked (illegal pitch) in one run or it would have been four. Oregon averages 8+ runs per game. She yielded a solo homer in the fifth and a ground double over first base earlier. The second thing is that Cal got a lot of base runners. The Oregon pitcher went the distance but only had 5ks (Rood 3x). The Bears are still not hitting in the clutch but lots of decent contact tonight. Maybe the team will bounce back and pull an upset tomorrow. The Ducks did not look unbeatable for an undefeated team (25-0). Utah upset UCLA, 2-1, in LA tonight. GO BEARS!

Why would Oregon play a freshmen pitcher for a opener. What happened to their upper clasmen pitchers, injuries? I thought they had big gun experienced pitchers?

Literally the two best pitchers in last years class chose Oregon. They are on fire with recruiting.

Ellish was thought to be the star... but the Pennsylvania pitcher is the one who came out and pitched as if she was a #1 starter from day one. I expect them to win 1 or 2 titles in the next four years.

Cheridan Hawkins, the big southpaw, was the star pitcher in recent years but she's gone. Elish was ranked as #1 recruit in the nation by one service.

Game 2- Cal takes the lead again with three singles [Reed, Pettis & Aldrete] off of frosh phenom Elish. Once again the Bears best two hitters did not participate in the rally. Rood grounded out and JJ struckout. Stephanie Trzcinski is in the circle today for the Bears. After four frames, each team has one run on five hits.
Ducks take the lead, 2-1, in the B5th on two extra-base hits (double & triple).

Bear batters managed only a walk by Pettis and a single by Laxamana over final four innings. Cal had five singles in the in the 1st three frames...
Cal's senior pitcher from down under went all six innings and held the potentially lethal Ducks (26-0) to two runs. Oregon posseses the 3rd highest team
batting average in the country in excess of .380.

The difference in the outcome was simply that Oregon managed three extra base hits which plated their runs. Cal had zero.

Final 2-1 we given up only 5 ers in 2 games to powerhouse on the road. Steph should split the workload with zoe this year.

Stephanie definitely seems to be on the rise. Holding the Ducks to 2 runs on the road was a terrific pitching job. Still bewildered that Aldrete, Pettis, or Pogue, the big swingers on the team & non slasher hitters have yet to hit a homer after 24 games!! Weird when I go to find the stats for 2016, 2015 to get comparisons they aren't there! Aldrete hit 19 & 15 homers at Tennessee (bio) and can't find how many she hit last year and now this year, zilch. Pettis is still hitting well as she leads the team with a .388 average but none so far, compare to 7 (per her bio) last year! We sure could have used a homer yesterday! New batting coach and more aggressive approach at the plate?

ZoŽ is pitching well but the ump will not call the knee high outside drop ball for a strike. she has a change-up
but lacks the confidence to throw it in clutch .Therefore-cannot get swinging strikes on Duck hitters. Conley has had to endure ten
pitch ABs twice. Oregon 5-2 coasting along... Conley has only allowed two earned runs.

Kobe Pettis has five hits in the series and is the only hitter that can handle the Ducks pitching this series. The other is Kylie Reed. Pettis has departed the game due to injury. She suffered a collision @ home plate. Rood's hitless & has not gotten the ball out of the infield in Eugene. JJ has one tap to the leftside of the infield
for an infield hit. To be honest, Cal has zero chance playing like this.

I'm outta here-Ducks hammering the Bears, 9-2, after 4 frames. Katy S-F now in relief. Have mercy, have mercy, baby. Have mercy, have mercy on me! Mercy rule: 10-2 (5)
