    Just checking in briefly after a quick glance at results...

    Cal W Swim & Dive: Tonight at #Phillips66Nats, @KathleenBaker2 2nd in 50 back, @amybilquist 5th in 50 back & @KatieMcLaugh1in 6th in 100 fly. #GoBears

    Looks like Thleen, Amy, Keaton (C final winner), had all achieved PBs tonight in the W 50 Back, smashing job!

    Also a good chance based on her 100 Fly results that Katie will get selected for WUGs which will be held in Taiwan in late August...same goes for Justin Lynch on the men's side.

    Thanks for your continuing updates. My laptop is having issues and I'm currently still in the process of getting my new laptop working. We appreciate your terrific reporting.

    Bummer that Eva scratched, hope she's the backstroke bridge between Baker/Amy and Walsh/Regan unless Keaton and/or CM step up.

    OBear - Thank you for your kind words! Spotty & incomplete reporting TBH lol (and more than a wee tilted towards the women since I'm relatively clueless with the men's side of things haha), but at least I'm trying... Anyway, best of luck with your laptop struggles

    The NCAA season naturally and justifiably gets the spotlight & top priority on the board.

    Just reckon since World Champs is the penultimate competition in the swimming world, just behind the Olympics, that it deserves its own thread & mentions here

    How our student-athletes fare in their races and how they conduct themselves as Cal ambassadors (esp when facing challenging situations) do reflect on the school and how it is perceived by the swimming community and indeed the outside world, not to mention their impact & influence upon potential future recruits & their families...

    BD - yeah these trials haven't been too kind on several of our heavy hitters (Dream Team 2015 - with Thleen thankfully the big exception!) as well as incoming baby Bears 2017 Sophie & 2018 Cassidy, and have also affected quite a number of hopeful prospects/recruits such as Eva, Izzy, Alex & Kate Douglass (see the quoted section above).

    Katie has been a trooper in doggedly contesting every one of her events, with results realistically commensurate with McL's expected progress a year & a half after her serious neck injury. Amy's back races have likely been impacted by her recent recovery from her longstanding stress fracture condition, but she has given it a good go here in spite of all that...hopefully Tokyo 2020 will be the time for her to shine!

    Keaton & Chenoa both continuing to display steady & encouraging progress in both their short & long course swims as Golden Bears.

    One consolation is I believe Eva has already qualified for Junior Worlds in the 100 Fly (behind Regan)...

    2017 Nationals (Worlds Trials) - Day 4 FINALS

    ------

    Going to be running in & out once again, so can't promise timely updates for finals...

    Personally cheering for a Thleen-Regan 1-2 in the W 100 Back, but wouldn't be too crushed if Olivia or Claire makes the team (well as long as Kathleen gets in as well lol), for sentimental reasons

    Hannah & Ali are also strong threats.

    Team USA needs to make a statement and get at least 2 swimmers in the mid to upper 58 sec range, to counter Canadian Kylie Masse's recent upsurge to the top of the rankings, near the WR mark!

    Scanning thru results now ...

    Must say that I'm pretty happy with the Top 2 in most of the races tonight, either cos those pairs likely represent the best combo right now who are capable of making an impact in Budapest (imho), or just cos they are sentimental favourites of mine

    Foremost, the Rio backstroke sprint duo of Thleen & Olivia, reunited!

    Similarly for the reunion of triple breaststroke queen Lilly who's a fave on this board, with the always classy & speedy Katie Meili.

    And of course Katie Ledecky & Leah Smith (believe Leah was originally recruited by Teri?) to pack their lethal 1-2 punch in the distance events (and a pleasantly surprising 400 IM for Leah as well!)

    Also very chuffed that everyone's fave "gentle giant" & multiple Olympic champion Matt Grevers will be hooking up with his natural successor Murph for one more run at Worlds, after having just missed qualifying for Rio! Wouldn't have minded Pebs qualifying for this event next to Murph, but he's already on the team via his 200m Back, and if I had to be absolutely objective lol, reckon Grevers' probably more capable of medaling in this distance than any other American at this point who isn't named Ryan Murphy. Hey perhaps Matt will get to be roomies with his buddy Nathan again hehe.

    Massively impressed by Katie McL's phenomenal closing splits in her back half of the 400m Free B final (particularly on that last 50m!!!) in what's a relatively new event for her. Destroying her old PB from prelims by over a second and a half too!

    Back to the backstroke (pun intended lol), Keaton's 1:01.84 in the C final was a PB for her.

    btw had felt really bad for Smoliga when she had slipped up completely on her start in the 50m Back prelims, so qualifying via the 100 Back tonight was redemption for her, even if she was in as part of the 4x100m Free relay (not too sad re Regan missing out here as she is already on the team for the 200m Back). Seems Olivia's fab underwater at the 50m wall sealed the deal for the coveted runner-up spot in the 100.

    Noteworthy: Thleen Bean busted out a statement 58.57 in recording the fastest 100m Back ever on American soil (and the 2nd fastest all-time amongst Americans), surpassing even her silver-medal time of 58.75 from the last Olympics!

    No surprise that Missy held the prev US Open record of 58.67, with Franklin's 58.33 American record that was accomplished in London still intact, for now.

    Watch out tho, Kathleen's not quite done in spite of already repping America in the 3 backstroke events + the medley relay ... she is stealthily entered in one of the lowly unseeded heats (#7?) of the 200 IM tomorrow, on the very last day of Nationals...

    2017 Nationals (Worlds Trials) - Day 5 PRELIMS

    ------
    Thx for those Top 10 all-time lists, OBear - no wonder Cal = "Backstroke U"

    Also note that Natalie, Hayley & Margaret's times were set in 2008, i.e. the LZR suit year.

    Anyway, Day 5 morning heats in progress: https://swimswam.com/2017-u-s-worlds...ms-live-recap/

    ------

    W 200m IM:

    Thleen -> B final as the top seed
    • 2020 recruit Alex Walsh -> A final
    • 2020 recruit Regan Smith -> C final

    Kathleen may have taken it a mite too easy as just misses out on the Championship final, over 2 sec slower than her PB!

    OTOH Baker was likely just using her prelims as a training swim judging from her easy speed, smooth languid strokes and not that much of a kick on the free leg.

    Our Dream Teamer has already qualified for Worlds in her primary back events, and taking on the IM on top of her already full schedule may not have been super advisable in consideration of her Crohn's flare-ups. Also tough to gauge one's pacing in the early rounds without the luxury of racing in a circle seeded heat.

    Besides, Margalis & Cox are already the heavy favourites for this event, with furdette Ella Eastin lurking dangerously in the wings...would have been a challenge to shoot for Top 2 here, even if you're the NCAA champion in this event and on a roll at Nationals!

    UPDATE => Above theory sort of confirmed, as Thleen has scratched from finals...

    ------

    M 200m IM:

    Prenot -> A final, top seed (last chance to get on the Worlds team!)
    Josa -> B final
    • 2017 baby Mefford -> C final
    • 2018 commit Whitley -> C final
    • 2017 baby Grieshop = C final, 1st Alternate

    ------

    W 50m Free:

    Abbey -> A final
    Madison Kennedy -> A final
    Amy -> B final
    • 2019 recruit Kate Douglass -> B final
    Maddie #23 (out of 102 Nationals qualifiers)
    Katie McL #30 (from the 400m Free last night to the 50m this morn lol...won her heat too!)
    • 2018 recruit Amalie Fackenthal -> C final
    • 2021 recruit Gretchen Walsh -> C final

    Sooo gutted 'bout Prenot getting just shut out of a spot on the Worlds team right at the end of the 200 IM (esp by a furdie no less!) ...
    Josh's reaction? "Well at least UC Berkeley physics has given me lots of practice dealing with crushing failure and disappointment"

    But OTOH, soooo brill that Abbey made the team in the 50m Free , why I was unabashedly screaming & shouting w/pure unadulterated joy at my mobile during the freakin' race (even if Weitzeil subsequently was barely out-touched for a 50m Fly spot in that surprise swimoff ... but hey, fly isn't her speciality anyway )

    question: I was disappointed in Amy Bilquist's performances as compared to her Olympic Trial's efforts in 2016. I believe that she finished 3rd in two events at the Trials but didn't even qualify for the A finals last week. How did her times compare? I don't follow swimming event times as closely as many of you guys do...I was hoping that Katie McLaughlin would step forward to the level of the "other" Cal Big Three but she was injured a year ago...Obviously, Kathleen Baker and Abbey Weitziel were superlative and made Team USA. I do realize that many competitors have a difficult time getting emotionally up the year following the Olympic Games. GO BEARS!

    Sorry just saw your question - here's a comparison of Amy's times @ Oly Trials v. Nationals:

    Swim Event | 2016 Trials | 2017 Nationals

    100m Back | ...59.37 (#3) | 1:00.79 (#12)
    200m Back | 2:08.30 (#4) | 2:14.76 (#32)

    I don't presume to know what's going on ... but this markedly significant difference in Amy's backstroke times @ Nats v. Trials, along with the observation that Amy was actually faster at the Santa Clara stop of the Arena Pro Series this year (i.e. 1:00.45 in the 100 back & 2:12.56 in the 200 back - whilst racing untapered, unrested & unshaved) than at Nationals, would suggest to me that injury or a health-related issue may have been the primary culprit...perhaps her stress fractures acting up again??

    Amy certainly seemed to be riding low in the water (not a good sign) and uncharacteristically behind much of the field from the start in several of her races, whilst in other events she started off strongly enough but then faded in her back half... Noticeably less adversely impacted in her freestyle than in her backstroke.

    If Amy could have reproduced at Nationals her breakthrough 2:08.30 200m Back performance from Oly Trials, she would have hypothetically beaten phenom Regan's 2:08.55 to claim the 2nd team spot behind Thleen in the longer back event! 3rd place Nats finisher was Asia Seidt who had turned in a 2:08.99.

    However, Amy would have had to further improve upon her Trials time in the 100m Back by another 0.21 sec in order to supplant Olivia for the runner-up position in the 100m Back at these Nationals (Smoliga's 59.17 @ Nats was her quickest ever on American soil - she had gone faster only @ Rio!). Hannah Stevens took 3rd @ Indy with her 59.74.

    NOTE: A number of top studs from other schools were also struggling with health issues at this Worlds qualifying meet, notably the Horns' Madisyn Cox: https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.co...e-of-her-life/

    Thanks for posting all of these UAC. Since I was gone for most of the week, it was really great to catch up. First of all, I think all of the Dream Teamers performed admirably well. Obviously Kathleen is breaming with confidence off her Olympic success and her NCAA Swimmer of the Meet performance. She is the Queen of the backstroke for USA swimming right now, following in the legacies of Natalie and Missy. Katie was tough as nails in all her events. It's strange how she swims her butterfly events so differently from her freestyle events. In the 200 Fly she seems like she goes out too fast (she was first after 300) and then just dies, and in her 400 Free she goes out slow (dead last after 200) and almost comes back to win it. Her ticket to the Olympics is still the 200 Fly. She just doesn't have the size or power of a Vollmer or Worrell to do well in the 100 Fly, and still is far out of contention with the likes of Ledecky and Leah Smith in the 200 and 400 Free. Abbey looked very fortunate to make the National team in the 50 Free. There were three or four swimmers within .05 of each other at the end. She looked a little fatigued overall, especially after her 100 consolation swim. I think being a sophomore and more experienced with college will help her a lot for next year. I expect her to be vastly improved next year. Amy is the one swimmer who I think has oodles of potential and is just short of reaching stardom. I don't know if it's injuries or other things, but she did not match her Olympic trials performance from last year. Even though she did really well in the 50 and 100 Free, I still think her ticket to the Olympics is either in the 100 or 200 Back. Two under rated 2018 swimmers are Grace Ariola (Texas) and Dakota Luther (Georgia).

    Great news for Katie McL on the day after her b'day - selected to rep Bears & Team USA on the women's side, whilst Justin Lynch (50/100 Fly) & Sean Grieshop (400 IM) will get the honour on the men's side!

    Amy (9 July 2017): HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BEST FRIEND KATHRYN! Thanks for being such a light in this world. I wouldn't want to live a life of bad luck with any other person (why are we so bad at pics)

    Katie has a rather full schedule as she'll be tackling the 50m + 100m + 200m Fly races, besides potential relay selection at the discretion of the coaches!

    On a slightly different note, was really happy to see super furdette Ella Eastin, who will be competing alongside Katie in the 200m Fly + will be a top contender in the 200m IM (I'll be cheering for Team Canada tho if baby Bear Sarah Darcel's in this event ), display a sense of humour in her tweet from Dairy Queen, after her shocking DQ upset in the 400m IM @ Nationals:

    The 2017 World University Games will be held @ Taoyuan City, Taiwan from 20-27 August.
