In a super close race, Murphy finishes third behind Xu (China) and Grevers.

  6. #51
Wow UAC! Siobhan Haughey looked very impressive finishing third in her heat behind Pelligrini and Hozzu. 200 Final should be very interesting adding Ledecky to the mix. Robin and MSH were probably in a little over their head in these semis, but they both over achieved IMO just to get here.

Lily King with the World Record in the 100 Breast.

FYI, if anyone wants to watch things live.

    Day 3 Finals - Worlds

Thank you all for the updates!

Out of the country with a really busy schedule, and so have missed much of the action & excitement @ Budapest 2017 - WRs tumbling down, Team USA performing well, Peaty & the lads shining for British Swimming, Lilly's epic showdown with Yuliya etc - hence appreciate the posts here

Sooo luvly to hear bout Thleen's smashing silver medal in the 100m Back, well done! Oh and btw lil Bean's eyelash game was massively on fleek here lol (had read some comments that her trademark blue boots were on display too haha):

Xu & Masse were indisputably the pre-race red hot favourites in the M & W 100m Back respectively, both slated to break the World Record in their events by most pundits (and the latter doing so), so our 2 s, Murph & Thleen, acquitted themselves really brilliantly tonight in the face of such excellent competition!

Robin also did good in making it to semis in the 200m Free, bodes well for the future...look forward to welcoming her along with the other baby Bears on campus in a month's time!

Anyway, will try to contribute a mite here with a few images whilst I have temporary access to WiFi:

Yeah pretty exciting innit even for the casual swim fan?!

Been geoblocked from watching the races on the NBC Sports site whilst I'm presently in Northern Europe, but have thankfully found alternative sources - and I must say that the slick pool setup here and massively enthusiastic crowd participation have a lot to do with it!

Huge congrats to Thleen for carrying on the tradition, breaking Natalie's American Record in the 50m Back (held by Bootsie before Nat) in tonight's semis to propel our Golden Bear to a Top 3 seeded spot for Thursday's finals - go Backstroke U !!!

As an example of how tight the field is in this sprint event, Kylie Masse, winner of last night's 100m Back and the WR holder in that event, achieved a new Canadian record in the 50m Back at semis today, yet will be shut out of tomorrow's finals...

    (eyelash game still on point...haha)

    ------

Murph also did his part in leading off Team USA's Mixed 4x100 Medley Relay to a new World Record this morning (subsequently broken by the finals squad)...in a time that would have won the 100m Back individual!

Apparently not too happy with his bronze in the 100m Back, Murph will have a fire lit under him as he tackles the 200m Back tomorrow with Pebs.

Siobhán wasn't too shabby in tonight's final either - smashed her own HK National record by dipping below the 1:56 mark to claim #5, finishing ahead of former Cal recruit Leah (who had also busted out a lifetime best I believe), as well as beating Trojan alum "the Iron Lady" (Katinka).

Don't think Teri could have realistically afforded both Haughey & Abbey however, and much as I've been impressed/wowed by Siobhán's upside since championing her recruiting from a few years back lol, still chuffed to bits that we got Abbey instead, and wouldn't trade Weitzeil for anyone else (well unless Siobhán's contemplating a transfer to Cal for book money... )

Oh this race was also memorable in that it was furdette Ledecky's 1st defeat ever in an individual event on the international stage, since London - quite an incredible record. But rather fitting OTOH that tonight's 200m Free win marked the swan song for the Lioness Of Verona (Federica Pellegrini).

In other news, looks like Lilly is switching nationalities and will be swimming for the Russians in tomorrow's 200m Breast (j/k )

    Day 5 Heats - Worlds

    Sneaking in a quickie update...

Murph the top seed in the 200m Back semis, Pebs also qualified (14th). Quah (SGP) is out, in spite of dropping almost a sec from his seed time (24th).

Robin led NED's 4x200m Free Relay off to secure the 5th seed in tonight's finals, which she will be competing in.

Robin: Being start swimmer of an awesome relay is always fun Can't wait to rock the final with the girls tonight #finabudapest2017 #4x200 #freestyle #budapest #worlds

BearDevil's Jenna (FIN) makes semis in the 200m Breast @ #16, bumping tedbear's Ukrainian dream recruit Viktoria Zeynep Gunes (TUR) by 0.09 sec (17th), and 2018 recruit Sophie Hansson (SWE) by 0.22 sec (19th), out of a lane for finals.

My former favourite recruits Siobhán Haughey (HKG), along with Freya Anderson (GBR) with a PB from prelims, will be competing in the 100m Free semis, the latter alongside tedbear's Canuck fave & co-Olympic champion, Penny.

Another recruit that I've mentioned in the past (now a Florida Gator), Liliána Szilágyi (HUN), will make her finals debut in front of the home crowd in the 200m Fly.

Nathan will face a loaded field in the men's blue riband event, the 100m Free final, with Gator Dressel who had destroyed the AR leading off the relay on Day 1.

Last but not least, Thleen, fresh off her massive PB & American mark last night in semis, will vie for a podium spot with the world's best in the 50m Back. The top 2 spots in this non-Olympic event are looking good for the 2 sprint specialists, Etiene Medeiros (BRA) & Fu Yuanhui (CHN), who are apparently a class above the rest of a stacked field. But nothing is written in stone, particularly in an event where the tiniest technical or mental slip up could spell the difference between a medal and being shut out!

    ------

Thleen: Always humbled by the opportunity to represent Team USA in finals tonight, and all smiles for my first American record #calbearbackstroke #finabudapest2017

    Day 5 finals

    Men's 100 free final, USA goes 1 & 2 with Dressel 47.17 & Nathan 47.87

    woman's 50 back final Baker 5th 27.50

men's back semis Ryan Murphy & Pebley both qualifies to the finals. Ryan 2nd 1:54.79 and Pebley 5th 1:55.20. Fastest time XU hot swimmer and was the 100 back winner.

    Other finals results for USA

KALISZ won 200MR and USA women won the 4x200 relay with Ledecky anchoring.

Other USA of note, my favorite Tiger Lilly barely qualified into the final 200br in 8th plc and only .01 out of 9th place. Both Simone (2nd) and Comerford (3rd) qualified to the final in the 100 free but they would have to beat sweden's Sarah SJOSTROM who had the fastest time. Don't count out Simone iwho normally rises to the occasion in Big Meets!

Cheers for the Day 5 finals updates!

Honestly, the 100m Free final is the Swedish WR holder's to lose, esp in Cate's absence. Don't see Simone (well the super furdette does have a history of delivering big, but would have to lower her PB in this event by a full sec to be in with a chance!), Penny (who's off her Rio form), Mallory or anyone else in the field who can currently pose a serious threat to Sjostrom...well unless Sarah self-destructs tomorrow like C1 did in Rio lol

A few additional Bears-related observations from tonight's finals session before I have to get some kip (real late here!):

Thleen's 27.50 was the 2nd fastest 50m Back swim done by an American, swifter than Natalie's (27.51) & Bootsie's (27.68) former American marks! The only faster US time in history belongs naturally to our little Bean, i.e. Baker's 27.48 AR from last night's semis...

Robin led off the Dutch 4x200m Free relay which was actually sitting at 5th at the 400m mark thanks to Femke's split (they were ahead of Japan, Hungary & Canada at that point), but Team NED ultimately ended up 7th.

    ------

Forgot to mention in my prev post that Anina had anchored the Danish relay team this morning - didn't quite qualify for finals, placing 10th in prelims.

Signe Bro, Marina Heller Hansen, Anina, Maj Howardsen

s scheduled to swim in the morning heats tomorrow (Day 6):

    M 50m Free: Nathan
    W 50m Fly: Farida
    M 100m Fly: Quah
    W 200m Back: Thleen (+ 2020 recruit Regan Smith)
