Bishop O'Dowd OT Miles Owens
The Bears filled a big need -literally and figuratively- today with the commitment of 6-7/315 Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, CA) High School offensive tackle Miles Owens.

With the Cal offensive line already thin, especially at tackle, the Bears have been targeting five or so offensive linemen, with an emphasis on the outside.

Owens made his announcement on Twitter this afternoon.

"First and foremost, I'd like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to play at the next level. I would like to thank my family, who has been there for me this entire process. I would also like to thank all the teammates and coaches that mentored me and taught me how to play in such a short time. Lastly, I would like to thank all the amazing coaches that reached out to me during this whole recruiting process.

"With a lot of thought, I would like to announce that I will continue my football career at UC Berkeley. Go Bears.

The 3 star Owens, who also holds offers from UCLA, Utah and Oregon State, also fills the Bears' desire to retain the best student athletes at positions of need in the Bay Area and NorCal.

The senior OT also played basketball for O'Dowd, as well.

Owens and his 15-1 O'Dowd squad racked up a state championship crown in December with a 43-24 victory over Valley View (Moreno Valley, CA).

With fall camp just around the corner on Monday, there's a buzz around Cal recruiting that seems poised to add several more commitments sooner than later.

Cal will host three of their big targets this weekend in running back Richard Newton, linebacker Jacob Mangum-Farrar and cornerback Chigozie Anusiem two days before camp starts.

Stay tuned for more from Owens coming up.
