The Bears had another “developmental practice” Sunday, one of their 15 permitted sessions leading up to the Cheez-It Bowl. Head coach Justin Wilcox and defensive coordinator, Tim DeRuyter addressed the media.

HC Justin Wilcox

  • On the benefits of having Jordan Kunaszyk and Evan Weaver: “The obvious is all the plays they have made and how productive they have been on the field. Totally different personalities, both big-time players, both bring a level of toughness and commitment and are a great example of the younger players. They are the driving force and the heartbeat of the defense.”
  • On Steven Coutts importance to the team:  “Steven is an excellent player. The average and everything can be swayed by where you are punting from, and his accuracy, pinning people, and the confidence we have in him to flip the field or pin somebody on offense is huge. We have made decisions differently than a year ago because of his ability, and he has just been extremely consistent and steady. He has been a weapon for us. Field position has been big for us this season and kind of the makeup for this team and is an important guy for us.”
  • On the extra reps out of Chase Garbers: Continuing to recognize things a little bit quicker, being more decisive. At that age, the more reps you can get, the more 11 on 11, the more you can see pressure, box count, just taking more command. That’s how you learn, by taking more reps.”
  • On traveling all around recruiting, to having to do bowl game preparation: “Its fun. It's busy. We have full days, but it’s a good thing. The fact that we can practice right now means we are going to a bowl, and we got recruiting weekends, and they are win-win propositions.”
  • On looking at TCU: “They will be ready to play, and our guys have watched them a little bit. We are going all in gameplaying and getting installation in and getting ready for the bowl game starting Tuesday’s practice.”

DC Tim DeRuyter

  • Opening statement: “Finally getting close to TCU prep, had another developmental practice today. Excited to see the young guys come along, tomorrow will be a good day to concentrate on TCU we will be off the road and on Tuesday we will be looking at TCU prep.”
  • On who stood out in the development periods: “Nick Altin has made some good progress as the season has gone on, guys like Deon White, when they are out there they are starting to feel more comfortable. Every day someone new flashes and it's exciting to see their development.”
  • On the secondary improvements: “I knew we had a lot of talent, and coach Alexander was going to do a great job with them. When you combine the talent and experience with all those guys coming back, you knew you had a chance to have a pretty good year. This year has been special. We have had guys who pushed each other and guys who hold themselves to a high standard. Its been a really special group and we will have one more opportunity to be all together, and we are still going to have a great nucleus coming back next year.”
