BERKELEY – Fifty-five Golden Bears are descending on Tokyo for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The Summer Games, which were delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, begin Wednesday (Tuesday night Pacific Time) with softball and soccer competitions. The opening ceremonies are Friday, and the Olympics run through Aug. 8.

Cal's contingent is made up of 48 athletes and seven coaches, with swimming leading the way with 18 representatives. Head men's swimming & diving coach David Durden is serving as the head coach of the U.S. men's team, while Cal head women's coach Teri McKeever is an assistant coach on the women's staff. Among those returning to the Olympics after swimming in Rio in 2016 are Ryan Murphy, Abbey Weitzeil and Tom Shields, who combined for six medals five years ago.

The Bears are well-represented in rowing, with 17 Golden Bears in Tokyo. Nine current or former men's rowers will be competing, and former Cal head coach Mike Teti is the U.S. coach for the men's eight boat.

Cal will also make a splash in water polo, with eight athletes and two coaches. Former Golden Bear standout Collin Morikawa, who won the The Open Championship last weekend in England, will compete for the United States in men's golf.

The Bears also have representatives in women's soccer, track & field, men's tennis, rugby, softball and table tennis.

Overall, Cal sports the third-most Olympic athletes (48) and third-most athletes competing for Team USA (16) among all U.S. universities. Golden Bears have captured 207 all-time Olympic medals, including 177 gold, since they won their first medals at the 1920 Games in Antwerp, Belgium. A total of 77 of the medals have come over the past four Olympics (Athens, Beijing, London and Rio).

CalBears.com will have daily coverage of the Olympics, and fans can also follow the Golden Bears on Cal's social media accounts. All Olympic content can be found at CalBears.com/Olympics.

Had a blast watching Val Arioto play just now against Canada. One of the best to ever play for Cal!

Good to see her too but wish she was more aggressive at the plate. She is much like Brandon Belt who both rather take walks than swing at close pitches. USA team seem to be struggling hitting so far winning 2-0 vs Italy and 1-0 vs Canada. Definitely pitching has been our strength so far. Think theyvwill need to put up more runs vs Japan though they struggled against Mexico too!
