Multiple Cal Football Student-Athletes In COVID Protocol

BERKELEY, CA – Multiple Cal football student-athletes are in COVID protocol and will not be available to play in Saturday's game at Arizona. All student-athletes traveling to Tucson will be tested and cleared prior to departing the Bay Area. Everyone within the Cal football program is compliant with UC Berkeley's COVID-19 vaccine requirements, and 99 percent of football student-athletes are fully vaccinated. Due to state and federal student privacy laws, Cal Athletics is not able to comment on the personal health of individual student-athletes.

"Our primary concern is for the health of our student-athletes, and we continue to monitor the situation closely," Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. "As we know, this pandemic is not over. We need to respect it and understand that it can affect much of what we do every day. Even with 99 percent of our football student-athletes fully vaccinated, we have seen that breakthrough cases are still possible."

There is zero reason to lie or spread rumors about a game between a 3-5 team and an 0-8 team. Safe to assume Covid has ravaged the squad and there might be a makeup game after UCLA. Time to start planning for u$c

Makeup game would work. Won't be as hot then either.

For ****'s Sake!

1. Just when Cal looks like the season might get somewhat back on track and the positive vibes start coming back.

2. Who care! Any of the high risk people who wanted the vaccine could have had the vaccine by now, if they die from Covid that's on them! Let us get on with our lives! I shouldn't have to live a crappier life because someone else won't get the vaccine. Also, 1,000,000 people shouldn't have to live a crappier life because a single person is unlucky and develops complication in spite of being vaccinated.

We will know then if we need the win for bowl eligibility or if we can just consider it our bowl game.

Strange. My book had Cal -12, but then took it off the board. Now it's back up at Cal -10.

IIRC the Pac-12 protocol this year is that it would be a forfeit, not a makeup game, if the Bears don't have enough players for Saturday.

Correct. Basically no make up games this year. We could play with the lower amount of players. Thankfully this is the largest team we have had in quite a while with all the super-seniors. And the 50 number is just silly - no reason to think that is accurate at all. Perhaps the number of people who were exposed. I would guess no more than 10. The bigger issue is - is Chase one of them.

Have there been other schools from P5 conferences that forfeited this year?

Strange, Wilner's tweet on the situation insinuates that this is an 'Only in Berkeley' situation.

But looking at the latest COB heath order (https://bit.ly/38V6Boq), it contains this language:

Quote:

8. A vaccinated person with an exposure to someone with suspected or
confirmed COVID-19 is not required to quarantine if they meet all of the
following criteria:
a. The person is fully vaccinated before the exposure; and
b. The person exhibits no symptoms of COVID-19.

If the teams cannot play, there will be no make-up game. The conference rules are very clear regarding COVID-related forfeitures.

"Only in Berkeley" covers just about everything related to the university.

Just can't make this stuff up. A fully-vaccinated Cal team might have to forfeit bc of COVID.

Apart from giving the Wildcats their first W of the season, the media (esp the media Cal hates) is going to have a field day with this.

I don't get it either.

Yup, has nothing to do with science or safety of the players. But everything to do with politics.

Put yourself in Coach Wilcox's shoes. You have finally righted the ship and have momentum and now this COB induced obstacle.

The covid protocols for the city of Berkeley don't say anything about vaccinated players not being able to travel. Have you read them?

I'd be willing to bet that the players who can't go to Tucson tested positive for Covid. I know you have a political drum to bang, but you might want to wait a beat.

The US is still losing upwards of 1,000 people per day to COVID and the numbers have actually been higher than that for the past ten weeks. At that rate, it's ten times the number of Americans who die from influenza every year. People have moved on, true, but the virus hasn't.

The great state of Texas is pulling even with California in number of COVID deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. Not per capita, total number. But they have moved on, so no big deal.

Even without this bit of Covid news, we knew that point spread was too high based on Cal's history with Arizona. Is this a gimme, sure win, take Arizona with the points? Or is Arizona especially bad this year with all the injuries?

Wait a minute . I thought the forfeit rule applied only if your team failed to reach 90%-94% vaccination rate.

Let's try this again:

I don't even understand how we could have 50 people out. That's an absurd amount of breakthrough cases if 99% of the team is vaccinated. Are players required to be completely isolated for X days just by virtue of exposure even when vaccinated?

Agree, this doesn't make sense. If 99% of players are vax'ed and you have to test positive to be out when vax'ed, number has to be lower. Maybe 5-10 if there was a mass exposure.

But wait…. Are 99% of our players "vaccinated" or are they "immunized"????
